I am going to the Keys later in march from the 20th, so will miss your dates.
Having been many times and tried diy shore fishing with little success I think youll find it tough.
My advice is to get boat guides the days you can afford down the keys ,I would also be going after tarpon rather than bonefish .
then fish the canals and ponds in the Miami / Everglades area diy.Youll find lots of species and good access to lots of water , just google fly fishing tamiami canal .At least up there you will catch something , which could be largemouth bass, peacock bass, tarpon, snook, snakehead, koi, grass carp, pickrel ,jacks, the list goes on...
This will also save you a fortune as everything is cheaper off the keys ,digs will be 1/3 of the keys etc.
The above mentioned bonefish whisperer has been ill from what I read so not sure if hes working at the moment , have had a few good days around Miami with him.
Hope that helps Colin

Re: Trip - Florida in March
Hi Shad - thank you for all the info - very helpful. Shame the dates don't quite work out!
Yes - it seems shore fishing is set to be tricky apart from a couple of place people have mentioned in this thread. I'm looking into finding a place that rents a fishing kayak that I can stand up in. That seems to be a viable alternative. Thanks for the recommendation about the canals too.
Tell me what you plan for your trip.

Re: Trip - Florida in March
Think there may be somewhere on the east end of Lower Matecumbe Key that rents kayaks. If you want to stand on one I'd rent a double kayak as you can usually perch in the middle to paddle and lots of space to keep fly line away from your kit.
We stayed on Lower Matecumbe a few years back and had a double kayak with the house. It was great for paddling like a SUP board and you could see into the water really well - I just had no idea what I was actually looking for...
Even if you just hook up on a few 3-4ln jack crevalles you'll get towed around for 10 minutes per fish! You'll also realise how many huge sharks there are...
