Default Cayo Coco - last minute

Heading for Cayo Coco later this week (a bit last minute). Staying at the the Melia if the internal flights actually deliver!

Planning to do a mixture of DIY and guided. Taking 8 and 10 weight rods.

Would welcome all advice but particularly on leaders (what strength) and how to pay the guides.

Should I try and book guides from here or is it usually ok to do this once out there?

    Many thanks for any advice.

WRT guides, you will have to pay and tip them with cash. You can book them when you get there. As far as leaders go, I usually just use RIO bonefish leaders 9' 12lb test, although the last batch I used did seem to break more easily than other RIOs I have used. I had 3 break-offs in January and have never had that before. 8 and 10 wt rods will be fine. When going for bonefish, I always use an 8wt. If you are looking for something other than bones, perhaps others can offer better advice. As far as patterns go, far and away my best success has been on tan colored shrimp patterns. I also always add a bit of orange (either legs and or egg sack) and the bones rarely turn their nose up to those. Last trip, my guide said that pattern would also be effective for permit, although we didn't see any.
Which Melia are you staying at? There are 3 Melia resorts in the CC/Cayo Guillermo area so let us know which you will be staying at, and we might be able to offer some advice on DIY areas near your resort.
I will be heading back to CC for a week on March 16, so if you are still there and are interested, I would be happy to share a boat/guide with you for a day. Just PM me and we can arrange an outing.

A friend said that they don't fly to Cayo direct from Gatwick until April - is this true? I can only see Manchester based deals at the moment.

Hi Brian, firstly many apologies for the delay in my reply. Apparently we are staying the Melia Cayo Coco adults only hotel. It has a lagoon as well as beach. Advice on DIY areas would be great.
    Will PM you.

There is a pretty nice flats not too far from that Melia. When you walk to the beach turn right (east) and keep walking past the Pullman. The shoreline will turn to the right (south) and just keep walking (1 km?) until the beach ends. Keep your eyes open when you are heading south as I have seen bones just off the shore there. When you get to the end of the beach head out into the water and follow the shore for a couple hundred meters. It is a little mucky there so you will have to slog through but before long you will reach the flats. It is large and you can then walk for a LONG ways (especially at low tide). There are definitely some bones and barracuda out that way. When walking that flats just remember to kind of shuffle your feet when walking. There are a number of stingray out there too and I ran into a situation a few years ago where I almost stepped on one, as it was buried in the sand and completely invisible. Generally, they are pretty timid and take off long before you reach them though. Chances are very good you will run into other fishermen at that resort.

I don't think you got the point. Dead mangrove is terrible and takes decades to grow back.
