    Goldenloch

Happy new 2018 to everyone, I really hope and trust that you are managing to survive and stay away from this absolutely hellish cold/ flu virus that has been doing the rounds, my wife Anne got it really bad, she then passing it to me, three weeks later we are just, and I mean just beginning to get better, but there are some hardy fishermen, there has been a few, tough guys and to be honest, some have just had a blast, in real terms these chaps have just come out for a laugh and a bit fresh air, fishing is their passion, they just cant help themselves, Harald Gavin has been here nearly every day, when we have not been frozen, as was Brian Stewart who is using his new style hook, one that straightens out so he doesn’t have to bend down to release the fish, Catches up till Saturday 06th have been excellent with the average being about 5 / angler but that all finished on a really cold day with ice forming on lines and rod eyes, Mike Teacher, from Letham, having his annual fish day with his two brothers, had a brilliant day, Mike catching the most 6 and every fish a stormer, fully finned and well attuned to the environment, using boats and bank the loch was theirs for the day, lunch and a late afternoon bottle or two in sub zero conditions, Sandy Drummond again showing a busy loch one day, how to catch fish 8 if I can remember right, its been a great winters holiday break, however now that January has arrived all will change, I would expect that this current cold spell will last a wee while, we just have to look forward to February / March, I have early orders in for some top quality fish, a load of Kilo sized Blue trout in February, and a load of 1.25 > 1.50 Brown trout in March complimenting the blues and browns already in the loch, these fish will be going in whilst we are reasonably quiet, thus allowing them to become acclimatised to the surroundings as the food supply in the loch at that time of year is usually pretty poor anyway, experience has taught me that by shoving in a lot of fish just now, at this time of year is not a good idea, in that fish straight from the fish hatchery and off pellets are not able to find enough natural feeding to maintain there condition, they in turn catch a disease of the fin which although not contagious develops quickly through malnourishment, if angler see fish with fin rot please remove and dispatch as they seldom recover, Quite a few lad had a welcome treat over the festive period with some free days on offer, Jim and Dave up from Kennoway / Methil getting a treat as did Hamish and his daughter Marion, Hamish being the poor lad that slipped and fell head first into the water as he overbalanced whilst letting Marion’s fish out the net, very quickly getting out was surprised to find that not much water had penetrated his waterproofs but his wellies were full to say the least. John McClelland, hi mate, I heard you suddenly and dramatically took very ill over the new year, and that you are still poorly, but now going in the right direction, I promise you there is a special place here for you, that there are still plenty fish with your name on them, Ernesto "Che" Guevara your lifetime hero is standing guard over you

Fly Fishing is a Pastime, it is not only relaxing, but also rewarding, come to the “Goldenloch” enjoy your Hobby to the max, no stress, only tranquil surroundings abundant wildlife, great fish, Brown, Blues and Rainbows, you will not be disappointed. Not much happening these past seven days, been a few guys up to fish sometimes, we are ice free, others times its got a tad of Ice, Stewart Milne and Sandy Drummond had a morning of youthful adventure, both arrived on the off chance that after an evening of -7 we would be ice free, “never mind it wont be that thick” of they went, 3 hours later time to call it a halt, but we have all done it at some stage in our life, just the day before Mark Robertson a blast from the past arrived and fished from the bank all afternoon on a 3 kill ticket which, he quickly achieved in 10 minutes, however it then slowed down and with a further 3 returned in the next few hours, he was totally chuffed, but did say that he was having to fight with an iced up line and the eyes of his rod freezing, Brian Stewart, Dundee, had several fish on black diawl bachs and ace of spades, as did Conner Izatt and his Dad, who to be honest really did brave the elements on Sunday afternoon, but a great afternoon was had with 10 to the boat not bad considering the conditions, a lot of wind and rain they also were using ace of spades and black shipman’s buzzers, but they did catch a “Goldenloch Grand Slam” a Blue, a Brownie and a rainbow all on the same trip, an achievment held by a few especially Huff and Puff “The Grimme Brothers” I do hope both you guys are well and survived you hospital visits as I know you were a bit nervous about this winter, Hi John I know you will be reading this and your brother Eddie has been keeping me up to date on the events that saw you ending up in the Vic, I can only say I will be visiting you soon as I know that I wont be giving you a cold, stay strong and get better there are fish out there with your name on them. So with snow forecast and a night of gales the weather is being pretty true to form, I just means that there is something nice about staying indoors on a cold day, Best Wishes to Colin Neville in taking over Fort Springs fishery, I am sure a lot of fun days are ahead for the clients at the fishery one thing for sure there is a lot of enthusiasm from Colin.

Not much to write about other than the fish are lying low just now, Fish being cold blooded creatures (poikilothermic) which means having the ability to change there body temperature to the surrounds that they are in, as they are in a very cold environment just now, so they have virtually shut down to their absolute basic functions, therefore need very little carbohydrates or protein at this time of year, eating, moving are not on the current list of things too, pellet fed fish (stocked Trout) on the other hand are very active, they have been reared in a total different environment with robotic feeders throwing in high concentrate protein/carbohydrates/oils, mostly manufactured from other forms of fish products and oils, two or three times per day, these fish will change to more natural feeding but it takes time, so as farmed fish they are relatively easy to catch, but as the days pass without fish pellets they themselves move into a more naturalized environment, fisheries do not feed fish, because of the cold water, as the metabolism shuts down the fish into winter mode, a good sign of this is in the spring when the first rays of sunshine hit the water the first fish caught usually have bloodworms snails (molluscs) etc attached to there scales a sure sign that they have been hibernating in the warmer mud on the loch floor, But for the moment a good hard winter can only but do a lot of good killing off unwanted weeds and bugs, however it will need to be a lot colder than this to be of any real good.

So a few nice days and some cracking fish being caught, lads fishing all had good catches all on basically traditional flies at about 3 feet down, best day so far was I think Thursday, we had a glorious flat calm, the sun was shining, as the day progressed the water warmed a little or perhaps it was the sun getting deep down through the clear water and warming the fish, but by mid day early afternoon the fish could be seen cruising, there bow waves clearly visible in the flat calm water, Robert Anderson, Perth and Jim Pollock, Auchterarder catching on Diawl Bachs and Black and Green vivas had 9 between them, all returned, also out for the day was Mr Hall, with his son, due to go back to school, this being the first opportunity to christen his Christmas present, a brand new rod and reel, was well rewarded with 6 fish all returned, William using his home tied flies however was just a tad disappointed as later in the afternoon ice was forming on his line and eyes of his rod, he couldn’t believe it was happening as there was no ice on the loch, Saturday was a wipe out with horrendous weather early morning so quick phone calls and a nice relaxing day for me was achieved, Sunday saw all the boats out and again it was very slow first thing with no fish showing, remember these are pretty much naturalised fish that do not behave like stockies, and again as the day warmed the fishing just got better and better, with everyone getting fish and happy faces coming of the water, a few bank anglers were a wee tad less happy, but again that was down to the lads on the boats having a lot more experience of fishing here at the Goldenloch, getting a good catch at this time of year is totally different from lets say fishing on a warm summers day, when on a day when the water is warm the fish will be actively swimming about covering large areas looking for grub, on a cold day like yesterday, Sunday, the guys on the boats knew that the fish are pretty inactive and are waiting on something passing quite close to their faces the fish are also not that bothered about eating but some are, skill and knowledge and a lot of practise is what makes it work, it was interesting to watch as the boats all vied for position or perhaps it was just them moving all about the loch.

Been noticing and reading in social media platforms that there seems to be a huge shift towards some anglers now promoting their local fishery and its getting to be dangerous comments, please realise that these guys are playing with peoples livelihoods, I do my own reports and have done for a long long time, I feel I can say what I want about my own fishery, I am sure that the owners and operators of other fisheries are more than able to promote and inform on there own fisheries behalf and its up to them to curtail certain clients that may or may not even have a clue how other fisheries operate, if not there will be a lot more nasty vibes to deal with, every fishery has its own way of working and its own type of client some run a lot faster than others but just recently a guy that didn’t want to give up was forced to because of the lack of customers, to day a statement was made “95% off fisheries allow the bung in britain the other 5% that don't are closed no customers fact” in social media that is absolutely untrue and refers to a particular type of fishing, what’s gone wrong why has it suddenly become a customer lead sport is it that anglers think there are no rules and they can do whatever they want, seriously that is not what it should be like, Rant Over.

With the weather improving a little, not a lot, things are beginning to start moving about, Trevor Peach and his spritely father had an amazing day from the bank with 12 fish caught, but the best piece of news for me was that “dad” is a retired entomologist and an expert on all things small and wriggly that develops wings and flies, So anglers please if you or your wives are pulling out flowering shrubs no longer required bring them here we have plans, three days this week with warm sunshine and the fish are moving about, a lot of them being bigger than the normal kilo fish, Alec Burns, Kirkcaldy had a flying start yesterday with 4 fish caught before his boat partner even had 1, however that changed later in the day, smiles all round yesterday Sean Burger enjoyed his day and both had on their first visit this year what could best be described as a phenomenal days fishing spoiled by one fish which on examination looked like a result of a cormorant attack, something that is happening more and more just now as the numbers of these birds are increasing dramatically, but the good thing is the boys dispatched the fish and left it for me to see “Just Perfect” thanks lads that’s what it should be like, nothing worse than slipping it back in the water to rot and cause infection, never mind warmer weather soon the long cold January is over.

So today is February 12th and did anyone else notice this morning that daylight came really early, that apart from the bitter cold, there seemed to be a change in the sky, it was a really clear blue with very thin clouds, the wildlife seems to have noticed it, we have had a very early chorus today from the all birds that are still feeding, perhaps spring is just around the corner, some early mild weather may be on its way, yesterday, Sunday, the fishing was a complete write off, as early anglers arrived we had a coffee and watched the temperature drop, 5 degrees, coupled with a light wind the conditions were unbearable, so after a short discussion, all decided that another day would be best, although two hardy lads did fish for an hour, both catching 1 each, but it wasn’t pleasant conditions, both fish had been returned to fight another day, Forward plans for 2018 are that stocking this year the same as last year with all fish being put in the water at an average of 1 kilo (2.2 Lbs) this is our purchase size and we can guarantee that, however we are putting in extra fish this year, a load of prime blues and brown trout, these fish may just be a tad smaller that is purely due to the fact that they take longer to grow and although they are all the same age the uniformity in size may be a bit wonky, as some grow a lot faster than others, we like to think that by sticking to this regime all the fish in the Goldenloch are of a particular size and quality, this offers to anglers a great catch, but we have other more exciting plans, plans that will change this fishery into something special, a big effort this year to try and get the loch Pond Life more in tune with nature, by encouraging certain aspects of habitat cover, that in turn should encourage more Molluscs like Ramshorn, bladder, pea, orb, snails, crustaceans like freshwater shrimp water spiders and that in turn will bring more larvae and hopefully a lot more fly life, but it all starts with allowing the grass weeds and others to be managed properly, Its easy to go out and buy large pellet fed fish that have very little natural wellbeing, but its going to take a lot more skill and management to produce fish that are more attune to wild fish and are proper hard fighting naturalised fish, by that I mean fish that are feeding entirely on natural water bourne aquatic animals, these fish will not only be healthier but should be fitter and importantly taste better they will respond hopefully better to fly life, its there wellbeing and the environment they live in that’s important, however the most important thing is that its all for fun yours in fishing and mine in getting it right.

    Feb 19th-Week-07-2018

Monday, last night it rained all night, just a constant steady rain, so when I went down to the boats, YEP, they were full, its been a cold wet week this last week , a lot of wind, frost, flat calms, just the perfect wrong kind of weather for fly fishing, more or less everything possible to keep the fish down in the murky depths, the water for the first time this year is mudded, this because the bottom and margins have been getting stirred up by the heavy wind, so how is it that fish are being caught, only ten minutes ago when I was down at the loch empting the boats, I heard a shout in the flat calm of today “fish on”, to say I was surprised is putting it mildly, as the person had just left in a boat and made there first cast, Yesterday Sunday was relatively busy and for the first time this year, there were a few on the bank, now interestingly the guys on the bank were catching fish, by that I mean the fish were well hooked and able to be landed this in contrast to the lads in the boats, an example being one lad said “well we only had 2 fish each, but we have had a great day and should have had at least 10 each” another boat with one lad catching 11 and his neighbour in the boat only getting 2, all fish being caught yesterday were on lures and pretty much deep down, yet the lads fishing were all having fun and that’s what it should be, so for sure the water level at the moment is good, the temperature is 5 degrees average, clarity best described as poor, no algae and zero weeds, pretty much what you would expect at this time of year, Forward thinking and planning is what makes fishing fun, as I have said before its all about enjoying your day, so I would like to say that come early April, Brian McGlashan, a Kirkcaldy lad and a chap who sees a future still in the art of presenting fly fishing flies to hard fighting hard to catch fish in the correct method, a guy that believes like myself that fishing is about knowledge and experience is offering a days tuition at the Goldenloch, I truly believe that Brian is the best at what he does, it would be advantageous for anglers to attend, this is not a day for beginners or youngsters wanting to learn how to fly fish, it is a day for those that can fish or think they can and want to be better, it is a day for sharing knowledge and tips, so please let me know if you want to book a place, you will not be disappointed anyways you get some free fishing as well.

I am sure it will snow this week, this so called beast from the East is not a nice thought, but it just lets us here in the cosy UK, see how vulnerable we are to the vagaries of the weather, we need cold hard weather, it does a lot of good for fishing, only the other day whilst I was down at the loch I noticed new green shoot of weed growing in the water, I took a temperature reading and was surprised that at two feet the temperature was 6 degrees I really thought it would have been much colder, so already this morning, Monday, we have a couple of hardy lads down at the loch today plus another two due soon, however it is cold, the difference between fishing in winter for naturalised fish and newly stocked pellet fed fish is huge the bigger stocked trout and I mean fish over 4>5 lbs are fed massive pellets and strangely enough they look just like orange FABs or blobs these pellets are full of stuff that promotes growth and also has a lot of natural protein/oils in them, Its fishing really well just now yesterday for example one boat had an excellent day with each angler catching several fish the lads on the bank similar, but due to the cold bank anglers tend to pack up quicker so its not really a fair comparison, Kaptain Kemp arrived and fished one afternoon and I believe he did very well, quite a few fish to his net, he is obviously missing his adventures on the high seas, (boat for Sale) but he still gets a buzz just rowing a boat, another couple due to make an appearance has got to be Huff and puff, fresh from all their operations a minus a few body parts or even better new bits installed lets hope a trip to the Glasgow Angling Centre for some new flies was on there shopping list, hold yer horses boys its still far to cold and to be honest the fish are not really moving yet, spring will soon be here and all the creepy crawlies will be moving soon

OKdokay, so it did snow, the loch believe it or not was ice free till Friday, and I was glad to see it freeze over, as the cormorants have been relentless, every day I have to be there at daybreak just to stop them landing on the water, one bird can easily eat 3 X 2 ½ lb troot, I know, as I have many times seen them regurgitate the fish back up so that they can fly away, I used to have a SNH licence to shoot them, but the rules now to get a licence are stupid, you must have a 3 year bird count of active eating birds on your water, lose a certain amount of fish before they will even consider you for a permit, run by beurocrats with no feeling or understanding for countryside life, so I have the correct guns and licence yet if I shoot a cormorant “which is a protected Species” I would be facing a criminal charge, loose my guns, its truly nuts the people who run the nature controlling have not an inclination of what is in the real world, recently we tried in vein to let someone or public body know that we had a dead swan, what was the answer from them “zero” as for disposal, there answer was put it in a landfill bin? Interestingly last week I sat at Lindores loch car park, there must have been in excess of 50 cormorants goosanders’ on the water and 30+ in the big trees at the side of the loch, imagine the damage they could cause, Its definitely a screwed up world when it comes to wildlife, we had robins and small birds coming to the bird tables in December but with the snow what we have now is a few jackdaws about 30 and some crows the wee birds are hiding a couple of hawks hang around I assume they are getting mice and voles, never mind spring will be here soon, its March and it will soon be warm, Kaptain Kemp, Huff and Puff, Mr Imrie and colleagues, Eddie, and everyone else, lots and lots of fish in the loch, new blues, new brownies, and lots of good Rainbows await, sorry nae humps or lumps, just top quality, fully naturalised, hard fighting fish, just what the doctor ordered and plenty of them, so for some proper Fly Fishing See you soon.
