Would you have been trying downstream of Knowes Weir?
If so are very, very few running sea trout on that river in October!

I fish the river Nith in SW Scotland. The season for salmon and sea trout does not close until the end of November. Only this Tuesday I had a seatrout of about 3.5lbs that was in fine condition! In this river the main run of salmon is in Oct/Nov.

Me too Banjo, me too, have done for 35 years, but it is unusual for fresh fish in some other areas!

I guess I'll need to try some rainbow bashing soon.
Forgive me if my post was misleading, I was referring only to the rivers I fish, as BMP pointed out, there are still many rivers that produce very fresh run sea trout at this time of year, unfortunately, they're not any of mine.

It can be highly localised too, my little river generally has a heavy back end run of clean seatrout up to 5lbs (not so far this year tho!) Yet taffys river (some 15 miles away) gets its fish in spring to mid summer.
rockslider and taffy1 like this.
