    Default Help wanted

    Hi all,
So just finished my first ever season of fly fishing, caught a few brownies and a grayling.
Iíve been obsessing about catching sea trout and grilse next year. I was wondering if there is anyone out there willing to show me the ropes next season? Iím based In Edinburgh but I donít drive so realistically Iím looking at the almond, the esk and possibly the tyne.
    Thanks in advance
    Ben

I don't live up there any more but it's also worth you having a look at the River Kelvin as you could easily get to it by train.

Almond can be good between the waterfall and end of the car park from July to the close season but for next season it will depend on what the contractors leave behind, the gravel road for the digger will get washed into good fish holding bits and will change the fishing completely, if the new pass works the fish will get up river faster so maybe heading further upstream will be better, it will be a fish it and work it out job i think.

The tyne gets good runs of sea trout from mid july but the local poachers can be pretty aggressive if you are in their way, that may have changed but i doubt it, nothing has stopped them before.

The esk is improving all the time but i dont know if its worthwhile fishing for the salmon or sea trout yet, grayling and trout are there in good numbers though and walking to a quiet bit further upstream makes all the difference.

There used to be a Musselburgh Angling club website but I can't find it anymore. I do know that they have a Facebook page but I don't know about such things.

I think that there was a reasonable run of sea trout this year if the amount splashing about at Morrison's Haven is anything to go by.

The salmon run so far has been disappointing.

No sign of anything using the fish pass when I have passed recently.

Never heard of anyone fishing any of these rivers by night, tho I talked to several of the esk regulars and a lot of small sea trout are caught by day on nymphs and dries. I think Iíll invest in a ticket for the esk and fish at night to see what happens. Could be a wee gem! Iíve see a lot splashing and jumping at Morrisonís haven some big ones too!! Does any one target them in the salt locally? Iíve fired off an email to the crown estates re permission for the salt so watch this space.
Are you an esk regular euan?

I used to be there on pretty much a daily basis. However, the fishing really declined for a few years and I gave up.

There are very few sea trout caught at the Haven. Most people spin for mackerel.

There we half a dozen people on the river on Saturday. Two I know were there for the salmon. The others were presumably there for the grayling.

I would like to see the new club do a bit of work on clearing the banks and the river of fallen trees. Where there used to be be really nice runs there are now just long slow silty glides. To give them their due they have done some work repairing the fish pass.

That is a surprise euan. Maybe few folk are targeting them? There are a few other salty spots that look promising, seaton sands and aberlady bay may be worth a punt. Also cramond foreshore. If I manage to sort out permission Iíll certainly give them a try.
Iíve met a few of the esk club members and they do seem to be pretty engaged in improving the fishing, they and the local Firth salmon board bailiff have told me the fishing is good. But like I said heaps of small sea trout during the day, night fishing is not really mentioned.

Why not take a look at Perth Angling Club? Lots of waters for £200 per year.
