The larger runs start in May. I spotted fish on opening day and spent the last 2 days fishing for them fresh off the tide.

It depends on the river and the area, some rivers start having runs late march early april, some dont even get their first runs till august, but most get them may, june and july.

Over the years I have caught more sea trout by day than I have by night. I am prepared to admit that may be because I am not very good at night fishing. I have fished all through the night on many occasions only to catch my first fish when daylight is breaking. Now I often forego the start of the night and go to bed with the alarm set at 3 am or thereabouts depending on the time of year and how near I am to the river. I have also often gone to sleep by the river on a warm night hoping that dawn will wake me early enough. I once woke with a red deer stag grazing next to me. Both of us were surprised by that encounter. I have found dawn up to about full light at 7 am in the summer to be a good time.

I have fished the River Dee but only for grayling in the winter and that was over 50 years ago. I used to fish the river Clwyd regularly.

In the smaller rivers in Devon I have caught a lot of small sea trout over the years with an up-stream nymph during the early to middle part of the day (after breakfast) much as I would fish for brown trout.

I suspect Oliver Kite could have caught a trout or Sea Trout using a bare hook nymph on pretty much any piece of running water in Europe! The man was an incredibly skilled fisherman. But he was also fishing rivers with stocks of fish, especially sea trout, orders of magnitude greater than we have now.

As for Welsh sewin runs, some fish run early, but they don’t run in quantity until late-May, and even more June, IMHE.

That's true enough, Sash, but an induced take still works and is still worth adding to the menu. Variety is the spice, etc. We just have to try harder these days - or be luckier!

It's well worth doing a great deal of daylight reconnaissance (certainly not time wasted!) if the water is low & clear, spotting isn't that simple but can help give you an idea where fish are likely to lie during the day. Oxygenated water, just off the main current, fine & far off when it comes to tempting them to a lure.
There's more to life than just fishing....but I ignore them. Hidden Content
