    Default How's yours?

Almost the end of August & so far down here in the southern parts of Wales, the runs of sea trout has been pretty dismal. A lack of water, warm water, low oxygen levels which have not been conducive to intercepting the silver tourists. How have other river systems fared?
2019 & it will be time for a change.

Went out for the first time this season last night. Had 1 of 3.5lb and another at 1lb (my first 2 sea trout on the fly). Went out again tonight and had another at 1lb. My understanding is that the run is much later than normal here (north wales) because of such a dry summer?

West Wales has been and remains incredibly dry, what a season, haven't been out after sewin once. Again, sewin's on the menu in all local pubs, the coracles must have had a phenomenal year.

Levels at Glan Teifi, Abercych today, the ground's still soaking up water like a sponge after the drought.

Had 3 days on the Connemara loughs: pretty dismal. There had been rain but the Loughs weren't t dropping fast enough. I guess you really need to fish rivers you can get to at a day or twos notice to be a successful sea trout angler. No good booking a few days fishing months ahead. Had my first experience sea trout fishing last year on the Teifi at night ( after 30 years trout & grayling fishing). Completely hooked me! I'm doomed.

    Time for some good(ish) news!
On sunny South Uist the lochs are awash with small sea trout this year. Last year was a disaster with the almost total failure of the run of finnock and fish below 2lb, just a few big ones until the very end of the season. This year has seen a complete turn around with plenty in the 1lb - 2lb class and plenty of true finnock (12oz and less). One or two big 'uns about too.
Last year's dismal total was past in the first week of August alone! This despite the very low number of rods fishing, you can't blame them for not coming back after years of struggle but they are missing out now.

Three short half days on the S. Uist lochs this week have given me 12 sea trout. Mainly fish in the 1lb - 1.5lb class but with one better fish yesterday. I think there are bigger fish about but we are struggling to get past all the tiddlers, it is a nice problem to have!

Cheers and yes it was a bit bigger than the rest, not weighed but I'd guess 3lb+ (ish).

That old favourite the Bibio. That along with Kate MacLaren and daddies (both wet and dry) seem to be doing the trick at the moment.
Anyway they will probably all vanish tomorrow and we will be back to scratching around for one fish every week!
