A young angler who I'd given a surplus fly vice plus some materials, to get him started fly tying, took me to the river tonight, as he'd told me he'd had some success this year with night time sea trout! He got a one pound fish on a muddler! I got two small brownies on an Alexandra, and I'm amazed to see it can be done !! It was hard though in the pitch black! I felt very old feeling my way around at that time of night ! I don't think I'll be going on my own like he does ! But he proved it can be done and I'm gonna tie more sea trout flies,. Perhaps if I teach him to tie his own flies he'll chaperone this old git again! Flys for night fishing? And how deep should I fish them ? ps I've ordered a copy of sea trout fishing as well .

If i had to pick one type of fishing it would be night time for sea trout, fishing until dawn on balmy nights is truly magical.

Yes the method is for after dark. I have success during the daytime using weighted nymphs under a indicator, find a shoal and drift the nymphs over their noses. Great you had a result the other night! You get used to night fishing, I only ever day fish for trout first few weeks of season and last few weeks, all our trout fishing on rivers happens after dark here including brownies!

I also have a box with doubles in it, bronze and salmon irons, can't lay my hands on them currently.

Depends on so many factors, but mainly on size of river, water height, depth and flow in pool, freshness of fish, how dark it is.
Generally in lowish water levels in summer, fish smaller flies near surface after dusk, sizes 6 to 10 say, then go bigger or deeper if it goes quiet after midnight.
Also other locals for advice of fly size and patterns.

The charm of fishing is that it is the pursuit of what is elusive but attainable, a perpetual series of occasions for hope. John Buchan 1st Baron Tweedsmuir.

Respect to anyone who chucks flies around blind, as it seems crazy hard to me. Snags in river, overhanging trees just put me right off even trying, though I can imagine doing it in an estuary or coastal situation.

That said, for you, have you come across the Nitecore headlamps? Good value, very light and small, charge from a USB cable and, more importantly for you, they have a red light function which would save your nightvision. Would make your scrambles to your marks easier possibly?

But respect from me for getting out.

Not as difficult as you may imagine. You are very well aware of where you are wading in a river, the position of what's behind in your backcast & where you expect your lure/offering is expected to be presented. These days, there's so much light pollution, it never seems to get as dark as in bygone days. Some nights there's no need for artificial light to change flies or untangle the leader.
2019 & it will be time for a change.
