Default Flys for night fishing? And how deep should I fish them ?

I'm planning on trying for sea trout at night on my small local wooded stream, I have tied some #8 zulu's , do I need to weight them or will they still catch fish if they are afloat? Someone once said that they can see you're fly at night because it's seen against the sky, if so is it possible to fish too deep ? I have caught them on the upstream nymph with gold heads in coloured water during daylight in the past ! Should I have added some weight to the palmered flys I've tied ? Also how important is colour at night ? I'd be grateful for any advise!

Another suggestion is, now that this season's sea trout season is almost over, is to invest in this book & have an enjoyable read over the coming winter months. Very informative & in all the time since it was first published, not a lot has changed....link:- https://www.amazon.co.uk/Sea-Trout-F.../dp/1841881848

    X2 on that!

The cover has changed since the version I have - several decades old now.

But it still is one of the best trout fishing books out there - it was like a bible to me!

x3 for the Hugh Falkus book.
In my experience fishing for sea trout May/July flies don't need to be weighted but if it's dour then it's worth trying a weighted fly or a intermediate/sink polytips .
I'd highly recommend getting some silver stoats tails 6/10s I wouldn't leave home without some.
I've heard all sorts of theories but I don't believe sight has much to do with them finding your fly, the blackest of nights can be the best.

I've caught a couple of sea trout over the last 10 days through the day so I fished the river until 10pm tonight with no luck.
Id be interested to hear how you get on?

Thanks for the advice! I skimmed over a friends copy of sea trout fishing by Falkus 30 years ago. I will try and buy a copy. Although the trout season has finished on the Isle of Man ! We can fish for migratory trout & salmon throughout October! So I'll give it a try!

    Hi Steven,
My local stream is small and wooded and has mainly seatrout. Our favourite method is a floating line with a beaded point fly and a unweighted dropper. use any pattern that takes your fancy but a beadhead (as we call them) helps get the flies down in the pool. Normal method here is to cast across and slow figure of eight back to you. Good luck if your river still open, i have 10 more days.

I fished many nights through to dawn for sea trout. Tried every fly I could. Best for me by far was a tandem worm fly fished deep. Maybe that was to do with location, method of fishing i.e. retrieve rate, depth...who knows. Just know when I put it on something would normally happen. Personally I put it down to vibes-vibration. Being bigger than a single fly it obviously caused more commotion. That's what I think anyway.

The charm of fishing is that it is the pursuit of what is elusive but attainable, a perpetual series of occasions for hope. John Buchan 1st Baron Tweedsmuir.

Or maybe another factor, as Falkus said in his book, a lure you have confidence in will be fished with confidence. I agree depth, speed etc. also contribute to success.
