    French vs. Spanish nymphing

Both are longer range techniques and some might suggest a subtle difference in the leader construction and flies favoured (perdigones). However, the best practical difference is Spanish nymphing is what you do if in Spain and French nymphing if in France. As I fish in the UK, I most practice...

''Wild Trout & Grayling Fishing 2020''

Struggled yesterday evening. Combination of very few fish feeding and me have an off day. This one punched above his weight. Great to be out none the less.

    how much is yours worth

I used to have thousands of flies that I never used. Now I have perhaps a few hundred, multiple sizes of a small number of patterns. I think it helps that I only fish rivers and streams - I no longer have all those wets and buzzers I used to hoard. I soon found other stuff to waste money on :)

    A Leader for Readers...

Welcome and good luck, writing is a pleasure and there are lots of reasons for doing it. Personally, I write for myself and as a diary record. It's become part of the overall enjoyment of fly fishing. Cheers,

    Welded/braided loop failure - advice?

If I’m only carrying one rod I change my leader from time to time and so a loop is easiest. Roman Moser loops are excellent and I have never had one fail. I attach them as Paul describes above. if you want to use a nail knot fair enough, but don’t be convinced by the anti loop faction. Moser...

    Wales

I'm sure some have, but it's a little difficult when my father (91 and shielding) who I have to shop for is 15 miles away, our nearest supermarket is 8 miles, my wife's GP practice is 16 miles and I now have to get my daughter to her school (in England) 22 miles away as they can't run the normal...

    Wales

Non-essential travel is still limited to 5 miles from home, but for most in rural areas this is not practical and ignored. The Welsh Government has made no official announcement as to when the five-mile rule may be lifted. Reports suggest the rule will be lifted on July 6, but they have yet to...

    how to distinguish my flies

You will probably find that you use a fraction of the patterns you buy. I wouldn't be surprised if 80% of all flies tied never get wet! A handful of patterns will imitate a majority of common hatches. Don't worry too much about becoming an expert entomologist, but some basic knowledge is...

Troutfiles UK Ltd - Any feedback?

Nothing wrong with pulling a streamer, big fish like streamers - just keep a low profile 😁 I think Richard's flies are excellent by the way.

Troutfiles UK Ltd - Any feedback?

I don't know this company so can't comment on them. Personally I would always question the quality of very cheap flies. I want the thing attached to the fish to be the best quality possible!

I can argue the moon is made of cheese, but it doesn't make it true..

    Barbed or not.

This comes up as often as which tippet! I suspect habit and hook stocks are one reason. If you are going to wack the fish it clearly doesn't matter. For any fish you intend to release, is there any benefit of barbed hooks? I believe none. Firstly, you handle the fish a lot less and 75% of the...

    Greetings from Wiltshire

I'd not heard of 'moonraker' so had to look it up. If my ancestors saw a reflection of the moon on a pond and tried to rake it out, I'm not sure I'd own up to that ! 😁

''Wild Trout & Grayling Fishing 2020''

Up at dawn this morning and on the river before 6am. It's a beautiful time to fish if you can stay awake. Had a few including a small dace, before my best brown of the season took a deer hair emerger. Shot off like a train all the way to the backing. Well worth the early rise...

I agree and I don't think I've helped matters. Perhaps Skeletor can start a new thread with whatever he wants to discuss.
