    Worm patterns

Best worm pattern I've found is an actual worm! Fished on a 10ft 3wt fly rod, 9ft straight mono leader, single worm no weight just flick it upstream and lead it down Czech nymph style. Helps if you toughen the worms with moss for 24 hours before using. Devastating, after fishing this for a few...

    I like eating trout!

Generally speaking effluent! I know of some rivers where the clubs and the EA are working hard to sort out problems with fish farms and my own personal experience of fishing is that if there is a trout farm upstream the wild fishing down stream is generally rubbish! Mick

    I like eating trout!

I don't have a problem with stocking a contained fishery (stillwater, reservoir, pond etc) the problem I have is the fish farm they get the stocked fish from. Fish farms need a large supply of fresh water which they usually take from a river, they also produce an equally large amount of waste...

    I like eating trout!

Ah, so as long as the fish farm is knackering up someone else's fishing and not your own then it's fine! I know I sound like I'm pressing an argument for the sake of it but I am honestly in somewhat of a turmoil? I'm not a fan of fish farms having seen a few and some of the damage that they...

    I like eating trout!

So it's ok to catch fish that have been grown in fish farms that have knackered the wild fish in the same catchment so long as the farmed have been put in a fishery before being caught for the table? Sorted! Cheers Mick

    I like eating trout!

I like eating trout! However I have a problem. I know of a number of rivers and small becks that have been knackered by fish farms that supply both rainbow trout for sale in fishmongers and supermarkets and also for stocking still water fisheries. I mainly fish rivers and have practiced strict...

Slaithwaite and District Open River Fly Competition

Many thanks to the 8 anglers who took part in the competition today and helped the club gather valuable data. A total of 487 fish were caught, with the vast majority being Brown Trout, a little worrying at the low number of Grayling being caught, but overall a very good day was had by all...

Slaithwaite and District Open River Fly Competition

Hi Folks, Slaithwaite and District Angling Club will be holding their Annual fly competition on Sunday 28 September. As those of you who have fished the comp before will know it's a great day and as much a social event as a competition. The main purpose of the competition is to provide a once...

    Walton Hall, Wakefield

Hi Folks, Spent a cracking evening yesterday fishing at Walton Hall. Me and my buddy managed over 20 to the boat with the largest measuring 54cm. I'm sure we would have managed more if we had set up a rod for dries before the light faded, as for the last half hour of light the fish were...

    Black Gnat Emergers

Do Black Gnats Emerge? Don't think the trout will care though, look like real fish catchers to me, may have to tie up a few copies! Mick

    Fly tying vise.

Hi Krikau, What you need is a Danvise Extension Arm which will turn your Danvise into a trully awesome vise allowing plenty of room behind the hook. See bottom right on this page: Beatty Vises & Tools Cheers Mick

    River access and laws

Hi Daz As far as I understand in law the burden of proof lies with the prosecution not the defence. As it is common practice for many anglers to return the catch (even game fish) then I would think you would have a very good defence and the prosecution would struggle even if you were caught...

    River access and laws

Hi Andy, Yes you are right and my answer was probably a little miss leading. Just because someone has not told you that you can not fish there and there is no sign does not give you any right of access either to fish or any other access. It only means you can not be prosecuted for trespass...

    River access and laws

Hi My understanding of the law is as follows: If you have to climb a wall or jump over a closed gate or fence to access the river / water then I believe you are committing aggravated trespass, which I believe is still a criminal offence If no fence or obvious barrier to your access then you...
