Perseid meteor shower tonight Let's hope for clear weather, I've not been sleeping well lately so I'll be up for it. Think they've done a typo, meteor hitting our atmosphere at 36mph, lol. Anyway this is...

2003 Rugby World Cup on ITV4

Itv4 are showing the England games, 6.30pm every night this week so far. I forgot how violent and quick the scrums were, seem a bit tame now. England v Samoa is on now. Great game so far. Cheers Sent from my FIG-LX1 using Tapatalk

    Mass Starling deaths

Very strange, I'm still pondering what could cause such an event, sad to lose so many starlings in one go. I know there's an out break of h5 bird flu in Suffolk, several thousand chickens are due to be culled. Sky News: Mystery as 'hundreds' of birds found dead in road in Wales Mystery as...

    Painted Lady (Vanessa cardui)

I managed to find my first Painted Lady earlier this week. I've heard that there is a big migration of this pretty butterfly expected this year, apparently every several years this event occurs. They lay their eggs on thistles, so if you want to find one a big bed of thistles is probably a good...

    A first for me

I've never shown any of my flies before, mostly because they aren't up to scratch and the standard of this forum. I take my hat off the people who have the tying skills, some of the quality you lot do is amazing. Anyway this is a weedless booby nymph thing, it's a size 8 hayabusa hook, size 1...

    How big!!

YouTube This is my first go at YouTube, so hope it works. The video was from our syndicate lake the other day, a few members didn't believe what size fish the many cormorants were talking. I think this video might just settle the argument. Cheers Sent from my FIG-LX1 using Tapatalk

    Fishing near Bamburgh, Northumberland

Hi everyone, I'm taking a small break near the sea at Bamburgh, Northumberland I was hoping someone on the site might know of some fly fishing venues. Is it worth having a go in the sea? I know nothing about sea fishing, is it too cold? do the fish prefer deep water or the surf, breakers? Thanks...

    Show us your RUDDERS

This is mine, it's still a bit of a prototype as I couldn't find any plans on the internet at the time. It has a self centreing system ( it's a bunjee cord ) which centres the rudder, it sort of works I think it just needs a bit more tension Sent from my HTC One mini 2 using Tapatalk

    Rapala knot

I've started to use the rapala knot this year on my lure set-up, I've found it completely brings to life snake, damsels, tadpoles, anything that naturally has movement. I have yet to have a failure of any kind with this knot, it's a little bit fiddly and I struggle to tie it in a wind blown...

Does a magnetic fly catch more fish

Sorry if this has already been asked, but many years ago I was led to believe that trout could sense a magnetic field, either from the earth or from a fish. Is this true? I know that the lateral line of a fish can detect the electrical impulses of an injured fish, but where there is electricity...

The size of a trout's heart

I remember a few years ago I was watching a John Wilson fishing program. He was at Roger Daltrey's fishing lake ( the man is a God ) John had just hooked a good size trout, Roger landed the fish then immediately dispatched it. John was a bit taken back saying that they didn't normally do that...

How dangerous is a diesel spill

Hypothetically speaking, let's say a small fly club was doing a lake up and a committee member that owned a tractor was helping one day and managed to tip tractor over, and let's say ten litres or red diesel escaped. If as much was done at the time to help ie, used a big bucket on a tractor to...

    Snippet danger

Just a little warning to anyone that doesn't already know of the dangers of line snippets. I was fishing hard into the wind over a reed bed, casting was very difficult but I managed and landed some very nice fish. I then noticed a kink in the fly line, and on inspection saw that it had been cut...

    Smelly flies

Hi everybody, I was wondering if trout could smell yu flies? I've been tying blobs lately and I often have a coffee. When it comes time to lick one's fingers to get all fritz fibres to lay away from the hook eye so I can tie off the flies, they can get quite stickyish and certainly smell of...

    Uncontrollable weed

I've found a new lake to me not more than half hour away, so I'm chuffed as you could imagine. But on reading an email of their rules and regulations find that after this season they will be shutting down due to uncontrollable and excessive weed growth, being river fed they can't use any...

    Fox fur

Was wondering is Fox hair any good for trout fly's, any good patterns. I'm mostly fishing lakes or reservoir. Also what's the best method for curing, I have some borax which I normally use. Someone mentioned hoof oil to soften pelt up afterwards, any advice would be gratefully accepted. Cheers...
