    Euro nymph fishing

I've done it, with a cheap whip, and caught fish. The big 'however' is that my arm got tired very quickly. I only managed about half an hour. That said, my whip was £5 from Fishing Republics kids section. If your whip is light and well balanced it could work. Good luck with the...

The river Hiz, Ickleford - fishing rights

All I can tell you is that I used to fish it regularly and never got told I shouldn't. There were often coarse fishers down there, after pike, but from the look of them they weren't the sort of folk that bothered to much about the rules. I used to (5 -7 years ago) work in the area and in...

Back on the rivers at last -Silver Fish in Winter.

Good work! I think from the photo that might be teardrops you are fishing on? If so, try using the same method on the top end (by the little foot bridge) and I reckon you'll pick up a few Perch.

Back on the rivers at last -Silver Fish in Winter.

I managed to get out for one last bash on the rivers at the weekend. My wife felt sorry for me that the season had been such a wash out and took the kids off for a few hours. I wanted it to be a bit of an occasion, so I used my brand new maxcatch 7ft6 3# rod and only home tied flies: I didn't...

This is the last week of the season in my area. Not much rain is forecast, but the rivers are still dirty and high. I'll be looking for an opportunity to get one last session in. I'm not feeling hopeful, but may be the lighter evenings offer some hope...

    Matchcatch

there is only 3g difference between the first 30ft of both lines, but the teal one seems massively more clunky.

    Matchcatch

The order included a 3# rod and a (paid for) 3# line, so it's possible that one of the free lines is 3#. One of them is noticeably thicker though. I'll get the kitchen scales out.

    Matchcatch

The lovely people at Maxcatch included two free lines in my last order. The only problem is there is nothing to say what type or weight of lines they are. The orange and brown line looks to be a similar thickness to the 3# that came in the same order, and the teal one is significantly thicker...

The River Ouzel. Post storm Ciara, pre storm Dennis. Funnily enough I opted to run, rather than fish, at lunchtime today I think river fishing may be off the agenda for the foreseeable

After reading about Dee’s successful excursion on the Ouzel, I have been eager to get back down myself. Work has been busy, so today was my first chance. Unfortunately my own attempts did not yield similar results. I blanked. But at least the weather was nice. There has been no serious rain...

    Matchcatch

Looks like the back log is making its way through. My parcel actually arrived yesterday (the post room at work forgot to tell me). So along with the rod, line and reel I paid (£29.41) for I also got a sticker, fly box (with 12 flies) and two better quality fly lines for free. How do they do it?

    Matchcatch

I placed my order (rod, reel and line) on the 19th of Jan. I was expecting a delay, due to the New Year. Interestingly, according to the Maxcatch tracking, the parcel was shipped across China 20th/21st and left the airport on the 22nd. I had a text from Royal Mail on the 22nd saying the...

New venue this time. This is a severely straightened roadside ditch but (as far as I can tell), it's technically a chalk stream. That said, the natural spring is heavily augmented by the outflow from a sewerage works, and a road widening scheme means that there is almost nothing natural...

    Pocket knifes

I have an Opinel #7 for freshwater and a #9 for saltwater (Mackerel). The #7 is for cutting line, I have always used it and had never thought that it might just be easier (or more legal) to buy some snippers. Bearing in mind I do a lot of urban fishing, this is probably something I should...

Back on the rivers at last -Silver Fish in Winter.

Well I have had an attempt with the worm patterns and still no Perch! Plenty of Roach and Chub, so I shouldn’t complain, but it is very frustrating. The water has cleared down again, so I could see the different fish in the mixed shoal, and I could even see their reactions to the fly. As the...

    Matchcatch

I have just found out that Fladen have stopped making my favourite 7ft #3 Vantage fly rod. I like to keep one made up in my car, and I have a tendency to slam the top joint in the door at least once a season. So where can I get a cheap rod that can take a bit of rough treatment? Maxcatch of...

Back on the rivers at last -Silver Fish in Winter.

I’ve started ‘tying’ these at my desk today. I’ll add a hackle and some weight and see if I can’t tempt a Perch or two. The Tongwell brook holds fish wherever there is a slightly deeper pool. The problem is these are few and far between, so much so that I use a bike to get between them. On the...

Although my last visit to Tongwell brook (sewer?) was unexpectedly successful, at the back of my mind was an image of stripes in the clear water. At the back of the mixed Chub and Roach shoal had lurked a few Perch that had evaded my hook. While none of the fish were big, the Perch looked like...

I’ve got to agree with everything Dee says. The fish aren’t feeding on the surface at the moment as (generally) there is nothing there for them to eat. Fish wets now and through into the spring, then when you start to see fish taking flies on the surface switch to dries if you want. Although...

For those that are interested, the kit was: Telescopic rod (£14 inc del, Wish.com), Cheap plastic reel (£7 inc del, Maxcatch), #4 fly line (£ cheap, found at the back of a drawer), 4ft 4lb and 4ft 2lb leader and a #16 beadhead GRHE. Conditions were blustery and wet, and you have seen the...
