Rainbow Trout: Carl Beck (River Lune trib)

Nearly all the original imports were spring spawning. 100 years of breeding on farms has jumbled them all up a bit.

It is an interesting one. I really don't see why, when ripe, rainbows don't spawn by themselves but it certainly appears they only very rarely do. Despite Steve Parton's rather bonkers post on the linked thread many millions of rainbow eggs have been and still are imported from the US. The vast...

Dry fly tippet... Sink or float

There are times and places when fluoro is all you will catch on when dryfly fishing. I find on Corrib in the Caenis hatch 7x frog hair fluoro is the best leader material by far. You do need a very finely tuned set up and you are not just random casting. Perhaps the lighter tippet and relatively...

Join me in a minutes silence at 11am

My favourite work hat is one of my father's that my mother threw out 25 years ago. Cleaned up fine, it's a bit tatty but still works. That's the beauty of a traditional tweed cap. My "best" cap is only just worn in at 15 years old.

And this is the real point it is only replacing legislation that was already in place when we were still in the EU

You wouldn't be here unless all your ancestors were successful hunters. Actually a fox can, and does, go to its equivalent of a local shop for food but I'm not sure you get the point. We certainly haven't evolved as "human beings". We are an animal, rather more successful than many, but still...

I thought I'd covered that but basically that's what we are hard wired to do. You don't question why a fox hunts: hunting is what they do. Well it's the same with us. Hunting is our natural behaviour and has been for at least 2 million years.

Interesting stuff. So here's a different perspective. Why shouldn't we hunt?

Cock fighting and bear baiting are certainly not on the same evolving scale as any fieldsports and never have been.

I hope you are right. The trouble is that instead of the argument being that giraffe hunting is wrong because it's unsustainable or based on giraffes chained to a tree the argument is based on people don't like it. As a non giraffe hunting salmon angler I'm not minded to care BUT the same logic...

It's a rather strange defence to claim that's it's ok to cause pain and suffering to a wild animal purely for your pleasure provided that you don't kill it for food. I think what motivates you and I to fish is exactly what motivates your antelope hunter. For 2 million years or more our...

How many people use flintlocks these days? Time moves on and toxic shot has to be part of history if shooting is to have a future.

I'm not sure you really do hunt to eat do you? I know times are hard but I'm sure you can access food fairly easily. Certainly I don't and I don't know anyone who does. I think you said in another thread you eat venison. Is that not just a by product of trophy hunting, just like the giraffe...

Perhaps you should look a bit more closely at what you do. Your defence seems to be based on popularity and what you like, but it has no basis in fact or reality. You do not hunt fish for food, therefore your motivation, as well as the actuality of what you do, is identical to the giraffe hunter.

I think what the majority of us do is trophy hunting of fish.

Trophy hunting? Isn't that exactly what angling is?

Perhaps you should have a look at what the definition of a minority government is!

I think that would be more natural. It's pretty hard to justify hunting a wild animal just for our entertainment. You could probably get away with box size limits to maintain sustainability. Carp angling would change a bit mind!
