River Rod - What would you recommend?

I have an 8’4w cult.... definitely a carbon blank... :)

    Yellow may

Exciting... a new fly for me... we obviously get yellow mays but not in any numbers on my local rivers so not something I have ever bothered carrying and hence tying... but off to the Usk over the weekend, and carrying a couple was suggested as useful by someone in the know.... they’ll be a shed...

    Premiership Rugby

I still remember the shock of my union mates after the first Wigan v Bath game... 😂 mmm perhaps that’s the link to my dislike of Bath... as for Leicester... surely it being Leicester is enough:)

    Premiership Rugby

I grew up watching both... Although Union only at international level.. (which to be fair doesn’t mean much, as a kid I would have watched the tiddlywinks World Cup if England were playing) and I did spend the first 20 yrs referring to Union as “kick and clap” 😂 but from about 20yrs old, after...

    Premiership Rugby

I don’t like Leicester or Bath 😂 😂 😂 no idea why... at a guess it’s related to them being ‘big’ names I heard a lot years ago when I was still more of a league fan

    super bargain rod?

you’ll be fine.... dont stress about it, if you can’t meet up with people to try rods out, then plump for one, cast it, fish it... in time you’ll either stick with the rod or switch it.... or even upgrade it... but in the mean time just get out and get fishing (and practicing your casting :) )...

Wild Trout and Grayling fishing 2021.

Fished up the West Dart and Cherry Brook today... very few fish showing, some days fish will be scattering all up the Cherry Brook... I think I spooked 2 from the bank today, in about 3 miles of water! You can do that on the first pool normally... but even without lots of fish a stunning spot...

Wild Trout and Grayling fishing 2021.

Up on the Monnow today... using an auction day from last year... Frome or Piddle tomorrow, Dartmoor Saturday... life is tough at the moment😂

Wild Trout and Grayling fishing 2021.

Frome today... early as needed to be home mid-afternoon. yesterday on the Piddle there was loads of fly life by mid-morn... noticeably less today, with the result there were less fish moving... managed some decent ones, without ever finding anything large... sun, clear blue sky, 17C, on the...

Wild Trout and Grayling fishing 2021.

First day out for what seems like ages....it appears my new hat is lucky after all:).. or perhaps my old one was unlucky😂 (if you didn’t see a previous thread then that will make no sense)... Back on the Piddle...river in great condition... faintest tinge of colour, mayfly started and loads of...

    Daddy longlegs ?!

There‘s a few 100 species of Cranefly in the U.K, although associated with flights periods of mid-summer through autumn (with highest numbers late summer-autumn), they can emerge any month of the year, with some species regularly emerging in spring... even wet springs :)

    Play with a mayfly emerger

to be honest Del, living in a small rural village with access straight onto very little used footpaths it has been tempting to pop out :) .... but it’s not really that much to ask of the general public.... and I didn’t fancy a 1k fine:)

Rod line wt. rating - criteria in choosing?

you’ll be fine... and will be fishing and learning, which is what it’s about (or can be, there’s also nothing wrong with being blissfully unaware :)) ... I bought a new 9’5w rod last year, not a rod weight I will use a huge amount normally.... but it was for a trip and certain rivers/conditions...

Rod line wt. rating - criteria in choosing?

to try and answer your question... if I was to only have one rod, for trout, on UK rivers... I’d go for a fairly fast 9’ 4w.... I probably use that 50% of the time... It will cope with most situations... i don’t use a streamer that much, but it will cope with smaller streamers, it can fish in...

Join me in a minutes silence at 11am

Trouble is anyone wearing it would have to wash their hair after each use..... it’s only the years of grease and grime holding it together 😂

    Play with a mayfly emerger

Boredom is kicking in... we had a test & trace contact having come into contact with someone who had later tested positive... all clear so far, but can’t leave the house until Tuesday.... 10 days indoors:rolleyes:.... the only saving grace, we haven’t been ill yet and the rivers have been blown...

    Rod weight

If it’s a 10’ 20yr old rod it’s unlikely to be a 2 or zero weight:)... so stick a 6 on it next time you go fishing and in all likelihood it will be fine if it feels a bit heavy the time after stick a 5 on it, or a 7 if it feels light...
