    Kippers on parade at Buchanty

My efforts from last Saturday with the salmon at Buchanty... All shots taken with a 70-200 mm f2.8 lens, mostly at 70 mm. Light levels non-existent on account of it raining the whole time. Aimed for 1/2000 sec, but quickly dropped that to 1/1500 sec, and finally 1/1000 sec as light got worse...

    Leaping salmon sequences

A few .gif sequences from Buchanty Spout on 2nd October. The cock salmon seem to be particularly wayward with their leaping and often smack themselves against the 'back wall'. There were loads of sea trout leaping all day and I don't think I saw a single one smack itself against the back wall...

    Trout up the Spout...

A few photos of the sea trout and possibly brownies (you decide which, if any, are brownies 😜) at Buchanty Spout on 2nd October. Col

    A few from Musselburgh yesterday...

Curlew... Guillemot... There are more young guillemots in the Forth estuary just now than you can shake a stick at. Lapwing... Dunlin... Ruff... Greylags... Col

    Phantom midge larva...

Recovered from a fish yesterday... x5 macro of head end... It was probably feeding on Daphnia, as there were some of those in the same fish... x5 macro... Also some of these wee veined thingies. Dunno what they were - possibly vegetable matter???? Col

Peregrines 'doing an Arctic skua' on a buzzard?

Don't know if anyone else has encountered anything like this? My fishing mate Ron was down at Seacliff, the tiny harbour beyond North Berwick. He was hoping to photograph diving gannets, but they were way too far out. He says.... "There was a brief, almighty disturbance overhead, and I...

    Latest on 'rebranded' Airflo G3...

After all the palaver of the 'bad batch' of Airflo G3 - the one with the new label - which seems to have been focused on the 8 lb stuff... I needed to restock on 7 lb, so I got some from Garry Evans, whose website was showing the old label. When it arrived it had the new label on it. This...

    A new PITA on stillwaters...

It's bad enough when competition desperados cut up your drift, but... Black Loch yesterday... Cheers, mate!

New E10 Petrol in old Evinrude outboard?

Was going to give my 30+ year-old, 2-cylinder, 4 HP, 2-stroke, Evinrude outboard a run-out at Black Loch tomorrow, just to keep the old dear ticking over - not been out in over 12 months. I drained the (remote) tank of the old fuel and bought some new petrol yesterday. Added the marine...

    Flank marks on sea trout?

Noted the number of sea trout that have a mark on their flank in the same place... A bit further back... Subtle, but it's there... A finnock, further back... What's catching them in the same spot all the time? Col

    Heads-up for tennis fans...

Amazon Prime - this evening - second match up on Arthur Ashe court at the US Open... British wonder-kid Emma Raducanu (frightfully posh 😜) plays American Shelby Rogers. Good back story... Back at Wimbledon, Raducanu reached the 4th round out of nowhere (18 years old and just doing her...

    Guess the weight 2

I was out for loch sea trout this week, on what I suspect was the same water that the fish in the 'Guess the weight' thread was taken from. With that in the back of my mind, and it seeming the first thread had been disowned, I thought if I get a decent fish I'll have a go at a Mark 2 version of...

    Tip ring wanted...

May I ask all the rod builders: who is the best company to ask for a bespoke tip ring? I broke 2 inches off my dapping rod this week. I was able to unstick the tip ring and remove it from the broken section by heating it, thinking I could just reattach it to the 'new' tip. But even just the...

Anyone got a ProPin+ centrepin reel?

The one on the right here.... I use it for dapping. The two screws that hold the seat in place are working loose. I just need to take the spool off to access them and tighten them up (and add a spot of Loctite). However, on removing the screw and centre plate that hold the spool in place...

    The ants are back, Ted...

Had a good day on dries on Thursday on our club water, thanks to a decent number of terrestrials falling on the water and getting the fish rising. Hardly any breeze, either. There were also a few olive duns coming off. Middle of the afternoon, a breeze got up for a short while and brought a...

Close Encounters of the Osprey Kind...

I was on our club water today. We've had ospreys nesting on it for over 20 years now, and I've had plenty good looks at them and taken a few decent photos of them as they come and go. However, I have never got anywhere as near to one as I did today. I was making my way across the water at the...

Lake of Menteith, 10 August 2021

Took a single man boat yesterday - first visit for nearly a month. Water temp still high, but not quite as high as it has been. Now 20 C. Water looking in good nick. Very little fly life in evidence. I found the fish were still over the deep water, across Gateside Bay and out towards the...

A few loch fish from this week...

Some on wets, some on the dap, and one on dry fly... 4 lb on a Red Lady Muddler... A wee schoolie on a Kate McLaren dapping fly... A fresher schoolie on wets... 3 lb class on a WOIGO... 3 pounder on the dap... One on a Goat variant... And, presented with this... And fishing...

    'Flats' fishing for brownies...

... on Loch of Harray, Orkney. Had a wee window of opporchancity last week with Jimmy on Harray. We got onto some risers on the skerry at the top of Bankhead Bay. The loch was low and the skerry had barely a foot of water on it. Just enough for the shallow keel Orkney boats to get over the...
