I'm going up to sunny Aberdeen to visit my wife's family in October.
I was hoping to get a bit of fishing in whilst up there.
I'll be actually be out in the sticks near Alford, which has a stretch of the Don that I can fish, but I'm not sure how good a spot it is.
So... does anyone...
Really helpful... I was going to buy some flies and think I was going to be a bit big (was looking at 12-14 so you've really helped!).
I will only be able to fish early in the morning anyway ... basically I will be allowed to fish until the kids wake up.
Yep - not planning to...
I'm still rather a newbie... having only started fly fishing last year.
But... after bothering some coarse fish around Cambridge I have booked a family holiday to Devon mid August.
Somehow... I have managed to book a place right on the river Torridge in Torrington... you know... by...
I know this is a long shot...
My bro's coming over this week-end from Australia to try and catch some pike on a fly.
I live in Cambridge... so can anyone recommend any venues which has the holy combo of quite a few pike and not stupidly hard to cast out from?
I only said no to pike because I haven't got a rod to cope with them. The biggest I have is a 5#.
Perch is definitely an option.
Thanks for the advice!
Just got to get out there and try it out now!
I have put my fly rod aside and been lure fishing for pike over the winter.
Now that the coarse season is closed on rivers and the sun is getting a bit warmer I'm itching to get back out to fly fishing on still waters.
However, I only started fishing last September and haven't fished...
My brother is coming to visit and he wants a shot at pike fishing with a fly (him on fly me on lures kind of match between us)...
Can you give me some details at how much those pike flies cot and how to order a few?
Wow... lovely pike - bit jealous.
Thanks! - that's enough encouragement for me to keep trying.
Never sure whether to go hard lures, soft bait or spinners.... but I suppose it depends on the day / water / fish...

Yeah... my fishing bag's covered in blood -...
Thanks for the advice!
Basically gone with it - 8' rod, braided mainline - got the mat and forceps...and caught about 7 jacks over about a month.... Despite the biggest being around 4-5lbs - was absolutely buzzing when I caught my first one.
After my second catch - invested in larger forceps...
Christmas and birthday are both fast approaching.
My concern isn't really the vegetation on the ground... it's being able to do an effective cast whilst surrounded by trees and bushes.
Using a spinner would be far easier - but would love to use a fly rod.
Basically, how can you get a...
It's got colder and I live in Cambridge... so not exactly a fly fishing hotspot.
So, to be able to make the most of the waters around me I want to diversify to try some lure fishing for Pike / Perch.
(I was fly fishing one day with not much luck when some other guy caught a few pike...
Right ... I live near Cambridge and the only free fishing options are in generally very murky waters.
So the question is - if a river is like soup, is there any point fly fishing ?
I have had some luck on drys, but as it gets colder - am I wasting my time trying nymphs or streamers...
