The search for the perfect 5 weight rod....

Weren’t Marcus’ rods built on Japanese Daimura blanks? Still rated as some of the best blanks ever produced?

The search for the perfect 5 weight rod....

One factor I always ponder on is why many really expensive rods often still only have moderate quality snake rings and reel fittings and not always the best finished wraps. I have some older rods with Titanium single leg sic lined rings- much lighter than snakes and much quieter and lower...

The search for the perfect 5 weight rod....

He’s a very talented caster, but despite him saying it’s a forgiving action, it looks awfully fast to me, doesn’t seem to bend that much?

    Thread bodies for dry flies

I use coloured bead elastic for translucent bodies, you can stretch It pretty thin, it also makes great nymph bodies. It’s available on longish spools for not a lot and is much tougher than flexifloss. Here’s just a couple of example suppliers - come in different diameters too I also use a lot...

    Orvis shops to close

A lot of Orvis’ store demise has been down to poor quality of staff, many with little enthusiasm for angling or any Country life experience. Our local store closed a few years back and at one time, the manager was a local guide and well known in the local shooting fraternity. The shop was always...

If you buy some helicopter tape, which is clear self adhesive thick film, that’s extremely tough, designed to protect the leading edges of Helicopter rotor blades. Cut it to the shape of your reel foot and stick it on the surface of your reel foot, that mates to the reel seat. It will lift the...

    What will happen to Elinor?

It will be sad if it goes that way, we’ve lost nearly all our local small stillwaters to carp fisheries, but sadly it’s plain economics, a day ticket would have to be treble or more and the banks very busy, to compete with the incomes from carp fisheries.

    Do rods deteriorate over time

I believe Bruce and Walker do and many of the U.K. and European custom builders do too. But you pays your money and takes your choices.

    Do rods deteriorate over time

I used to be a big Loomis fan and once over had two Streamdance GLX 8’-6” #4 one was brilliant, the other was a dog and folded if you aerialised any amount of line- there was a massive difference between them!

    Raw Sewage In Rivers

The issue from agriculture is what we call in the industry:- “diffuse pollution” - not “pollution events”, which are spillages and accidents weather and human related. This is a gradual leaching of a cocktail of contaminants:- crop protection products- Herbicides, fungicides, insecticides, plant...

    Raw Sewage In Rivers

Being bred and born in the Industrial West Riding, I well remember what the Rivers were like in the early sixties. The Calder, quite close to us, was so badly contaminated with hydrocarbons, various solvents and detergents, if you fell in, you died, no question, from the chemicals absorbed...

Newbie question- affixing the tip ring

You can buy a digital micrometer for less than £5 off EBay they are essential really, you can buy chromed tip rings cheaply inc post, I prefer to buy lined Titanium ones, as they are lighter, last forever and much quieter shooting line, with lower friction on landing a fish- for very little...

    Black Gnat

There’s many interpretations of “Black Gnat’s” as a pattern. The top left is commonly used in Eastern Europe, Slovenia, Czech Republic etc with the central hackle. Second from left top, is a surface film emerger with a dun wing, next a black spider with built up silk body, then s black F fly...
