They simply can't. My disappointment is based on being told by my surgery that they are under resourced. Checking on the BMA and GMC websites, this is not a valid reason for refusing to cooperate on grounds of conscientious objection.

That's an interesting point. It was my understanding that they advise if an applicant had suffered from a specific list of illnesses or if there was some physical problem that might prevent someone from safely using a firearm. They do not provide an opinion as to a candidates suitability.

Agree entirely. Scotland appear to have a number of government approved GP's able to provide reports who are clearly not opposed to the possession of privately owned firearms. England and Wales could do something similar I'm sure. I'd expect there to be a cost element though.

Indeed. It's also my understanding that the police would be held accountable because it's still them who make the decision to sign the license or not. No system will ever be 100% safe, but I'm surprised this situation has been allowed to happen.

Didn't Durham start all this off after the balls up with the Atherton Case wanting FAC/SG holders to pay for a medical report?

A medical consent form was included in the renewal.

At the time it was voluntary, but was never stated as such, it was put forward by the FEO's as if it was mandatory & license holders had to fill that section in.

I got the impression that Durham were looking for a patsy in case the same occurred in the future.

Also agree with sewinbashers three points.

Apparently Lincolnshire police force will now start doing what pretty much everybody already expected to happen anyway...
