There was a post on here some time ago with the very same problem on the same reel, can't remember the outcome sorry, try the search function.
Try putting the whole reel in very hot water for twenty mins.

I've just popped off a spool on a "President". When viewed from the inside the spool, the release lever is just a simple clip with a half moon shaped cutout . You will see a pointed shaft if you have removed the top plate . If you can move the notch out from under the the " point" then there are only a couple of other possibilities.

    1) the spool contains a nylon caged bearing that slides onto the main diameter of the clutch spindle. It is unlikely that this would bind, but the smaller diameter of the spindle which is directly underneath the point and is about 10mm long is quite a close fit as it passes through the spool It could possibly corrode there ,

    2) directly underneath the bearing the spool has a recess with 2 different inner diameters which mate up with two stepped outer diameters on the clutch " drum " looking at them that is the only other area that has a close enough fit to bind with corrosion or sand / grit etc.

If you would like a copy of the original instructions / schematic drop me a PM with your email address and I'll scan one tomorrow and send a .pdf.

    Thanks again for advice.

Will have another look and try hot water.

** Applied hot water (30 secs) and pulled - spool came off - there is corrosion but should be able to clean and grease **

    Thanks

Haggstock - an old post I know, but I've got a current problem with this very reel - I don't suppose you still have the schematic? I can't find one online.

    Thanks

I’ll have a look in the garage tomorrow and see if I still have the boxes . I bought six of these reels in different sizes when they went out of production , and I’ve ended up keeping 2 but as it’s six years since I bought them the boxes might have disappeared. If I can find it I’ll post up here
