Default Maxcatch Avid v Piscifun Sword?

Iíll likely be receiving a Wychwood Drift 10ft #3 around the winter solstice.

I donít think my tiny Shimano Ultegra would be right on a 10ft rod and in any case itís already matched up with a 7ft 9ins St Croix.

I havenít bought a fly reel for over 15 years and brands like Scientific Anglers, (BFR), have disappeared since then. After browsing online for what seems like ages, Iíve started to consider a reel direct from China and it seems to be a choice between Maxcatch and Piscifun.

So Iíd be grateful for any advice, or as Harry Hill might say, ďwhich is best.....?Ē

I can't comment on the maxcatch reel but the Piscifun is a solid built reel, easily the best value for money reel I've bought, it would be interesting to hear from someone that has both?

My Piscifun Sword has been faultless to date, nice drag looks smart and is just a nice all round bit of kit.
I haven’t had a reel from Maxcatch but a few on here have and seem pleased.

    I have a sword and it's a great reel.
Extremely good value for a high quality product. Don't see how anyone can be disappointed with one.

Iíve had two from Maxcatch; an SA Clicker 3/4 and an Avid 1/3. The Clicker is a lovely reel for river work and if the lighter line version comes back into production I will definitely buy one. The Avid is also a nice reel, but in such a small size is a bit overgunned with the disc drag. Iíve never use a Piscifun but others on the forum who know their reels like them.

    I have both reels.

In my opinion, the Piscifun reel is MILES better than the Avid which, again in my opinion, I think is pretty poor, albeit cheap.

The piscifun sword is much better build quality and very good value, comparable with more expensive reels, whereas with the Avid you get what you pay for.

Having said that, I bought the Avid, almost as a disposable reel, for occasional use in the sea after mullet while holidaying abroad and it does the job ok.

Many thanks all for your help.

I was googling the Piscifun Sword again last night and realised I could get a black 5/6 for £36 via Amazon prime.

It arrived this afternoon and I have to agree, seems very high quality for the price. Glad I went for the 5/6, I think the 3/4 might be a shade too small for a ten footer.

Though a green 3/4 Sword II would look very nice on the St Croix.........

    That's a bargain at £36 I'm sure you'll like it.
