Was back up the river on wed,(no fish) but all afternoon on a reasonable NE wind.Hundreds of pinkfeet arrived.Skien after Skien. With them getting all exited. They were travelling way up, but as they got near their wintering grounds.they dropped rapidly. saw a wheatear heading south. still quite a few swallows about.and still some curlews on the damp fields .
Yesterday I was in Sutherland at Strathy and counted 23 swallows sitting on an electric wire. It was the hottest day I can remember in Sept. My neighbour told me that his swallows got their last brood out of the nest on second week of Sept. I did wonder if this was too late for them to feed and develop and then travel?
