Caught this while trout fishing a caithness loch.

I had it confirmed from the photo by experts but would be intrigued as to what peoples thoughts are on it.20200704_141321.jpg

A smolt? why the rarity? from cages?
Not from a cage

Land locked smolt that could not find it's way out of watten loch,

After a particularly dry spring in these parts the loch level was low enough to prevent downstream migration,

Another half dozen has also been reported over the past month

We've caught the occasional salmon smolt in Watten, but a lot smaller than that one. That's the biggest 'loch smolt' I've seen! Interesting to ponder what it would grow to if kept confined to the loch...

Strangest place we've ever had one is Loch Bhac...

How on earth???

Well within my comfort zone
Lovely example of a well developed salmon smolt. Wasn't there a few places in Britain that had a head of land-locked salmon that spawned in feeder streams?

we used to keep a few smolts in a spare tank for a Xmas treat, usually get to 3or 4 Lbs, I took some up to a local stank, but it took 2 years for them to get to about 2lbs, they stayed in the stank for about 4 years reaching about 4lbs until some twerp managed to fish them all out, he too k home a bag of a dozen , and that was it, , I used to smoke the ones we kept in the spare tank, easker1
