That's two times I have gotten into trouble with that one :)

It's an Amercanism apparently, adopted from medieval English, Shakespeare used 'gotton', my spell check has switched off so entirely mea culpa.

I stayed at the Altnaharra Hotel Sun-Tue this week and was the only fisherman there
The rest of the rooms were taken by NC 500 tourists and cyclists
Being a frequent visitor I know that this ratio is pretty much the norm
If the hotel was to rely solely on fishermen and regular tourists it could not survive,in fact before the NC 500 was ‘invented’ it did not survive and closed down
Of the seven boats available on Loch Hope only two were taken, mine and three gentlemen who have taken this week for 29 years
The fishing was very good, I had 14 sea trout, not finnock, in two days
All of which begs the question, why aren’t more fishermen visiting and could the hotel stay in business without the drivers and cyclists

How much was it?

£145/night
Bit steep for me for fishing.

I'll convert the joke for the context...

Owner of the Altnaharra says to the manager..don't let those NC500 types in here, just discourage them.
First day the manager looks up and sees a guy with a Porsche T shirt on come in, how much for a night asks NC500 guy? errr..70 pounds sir says the manager, excellent says NC500 guy I'll take it.

Next day 5 NC500 guys walk in, how much for a room? errrrr...100 pounds each says the manager, fantastic they say, we'll take em.

Next day the car park is full, 20 squeeze in, how much for rooms they ask, errrrr..145 pounds says the barman, brilliant they say, we'll have them please.

Manager goes to the owner and says look this is not working, I'm up to 145 pounds and they keep coming, what should I do?

Chuck the fishers out he says. :)

Many a true word,,,,,,,
Funny thing is in the early to mid 1900s the hotel car park was always full of Rolls Royce's, all there for the fishing

How many boats do Altnaharra have? I thought it was only 1 or 2?

Do you know where the three gents were from? Were they staying at Klibrek?

Altnaharra have 1 of the 4 on middle bay and 1 of the 3 on south end
There were only 3 boats on middle bay last week, which I'm told is now permanent, and I was wondering who had taken one off. There are 2 North end boats as well but I'm not sure how often they go out these days.

I hadn't realised one of the middle bay boats had gone
I'm told that the north end boats aren't available at all
My fear is that they and perhaps the others also will only be available to people staying in estate lodges once they have all been upgraded

The 2 North end boats are reserved for Kinloch, 2 south end boats for Strathmore. One middle bay boat is privately owned. That leaves 2 Altnaharra boats and one I don't know.

Because they only have two boats worth taking (the two on Hope). So, that keeps the numbers of high paying anglers down. The trout fishing in the area isn't that great so the hotel isn't going to fill up with brown trout anglers.

It is staggering really that in a corner of the Scotland that still has good runs of salmon & sea trout that so much of the fishing is now unused. Loch Naver (maybe not the best salmon loch for fly - but then our own Cap'n Fishy did ok) is hardly ever fished now. Loch Hope (and the river) has greatly reduced rod effort and the Mudale and Mallart (Naver tribs) are so lightly fished that they gave up a total of two fish last year (both from the Mallart).

Even the Bettyhill AC water on the Naver can go a whole week without a day ticket being sold on it, so it would seem that the lack of interest in the fishing and the lack of availability in the area are feeding off each other.

I enquired about the Mallart and it appears to be owned by two estates that offer three days fishing with the lodge, it hardly seemed with the trek for three days.
