For about £60 you can get twelve months trout and exceptional grayling fishing by joinig a club like cadac on the Welsh Dee.
£30  for a day on the wharf as much as i like to fish it is way too much.
other major beats which are open for winter grayling can be had for £8-£20

As both venues are about 60 miles from my home the Welsh Dee will continue to get my money.

£35 not £30 !!

I went along the Wharfe at Bolton Abbey with my family for a new yrs walk - it was RAMMED with other families all doing the same. The car park was £5+ (so ticket + car pk = £35) then there is a cafe/shop etc.
There has been quite a bit of restoration of e.g. fences etc and general groundworks, also the cafe has been refurbed.

Clearly Fly Fishing is not their priority I'd guess, and they'll have worked out that they are popular anyway so can afford to reduce the fishing pressure with a more expensive ticket, whilst simultaneously covering the mortgage on the refurb.

Also brings them in to line with the likes of Appletreewick, Barden and Burnsall Angling Club & Kilnsey, who charge around £35.

Way OTT IMHO - I'll be off to my local £7 / day beat ;):p

Hi
I see that as from April 1st the day ticket prices are going up to £30.
Christ on a bike! Time flies... and I must be getting old. Last time I fished Bolton Abbey it was something like £8.00, and the car park was free! I fished both Burnsall (which was about £17 at that time) and Bolton Abbey about a dozen times a year each... but then I was young, free, single.. and child free! Dosh was easy come easy go  Different story now.. as with the prices. I love the Burnsall water, and have got to know it intimately over the last 18 years or so. If there's only a fiver difference in the price now between the Bolton Abbey and the Burnsall tickets, then it's a no-brainer. 7 miles or so of mailny double bank, excellent fishing, stunningly beautiful, free parking, and lots of places out of the reach of dinghies, dogs and dickheads.
Sure, clubs can offer great value, but £35 for up to 15 hrs access to one of the great northern trout and grayling streams is nowt.
It amazes me how some people balk at alot of day ticket prices, whether river or still, and talk as if they are being ripped off, and fishing is a necessity that needs to justified price-wise. It's not, it's a luxury, it's yer passion... Spoil yerself now and again.

I did hear a rumour that the rules were due to change at BA this year aswell, no wading etc. anyone have you any news on that?

For me, the Burnsall stretch is superb, breathtaking in parts, certainly the best stretch of river I've fished and if the Test/Kennet/Avon etc. are £100+ a day, and the likes of Dever/Avington/Sutton Springs are getting on for that then £35 for a full day at Burnsall is a steal, particularly if it's only £5 more than Bolton Abbey. When a season ticket is similarly priced to those of some stillwater rainbow venues for me it put's the whole thing into context. I only wish I lived closed to Burnsall so I could fish it weekly.

Regards,
Terry

P.s. you don't pay for parking at BA if you are on a fishing ticket.

My My you boys are getting well shafted , you can get a full season on the clyde( one of the finest rivers in britain) for the same price as a day ticket on the mentioned river , infact most rivers in scotland are all in the 8-10 pound bracket for a day ticket . It only starts to get dear when salmon are in the river system.

You can even fish the TEST (yes, the Test !!) for £18 on a day ticket for Grayling.

I also take yr point tho Scratch about spoiling yourself now & then, just a shame it's so much if you wanted to fish it often. e.g 5 days for £175 - isn't it better to join a club?

NB Burnsall is the same price as BA once you add in the car park fee at BA.

Car parking's free in the Bolton Abbey car parks if you display your fishing permit. Lovely place to fish but avoid sunny weekends and bank holidays if possible because it's popular with tourists and day trippers. It's a serious fishery right enough - they employ a keepr or two and have a brown trout breeding programme using trapped fish to maintain wild fish stocks. Well worth a visit even if it's just to enjoy the surroundings. And if you want a great meal at a reasonable price avoid the Devonshire Arms and visit The Fleece at nearby Addingham

Hi Folks,

I love the Wharfe and have had some great days at Bolton Abbey but £30 is starting to make me think twice (I think the parking is included in the ticket price). Burnsall at £35 seems more attractive when you consider that you'll have less bother with day trippers and their dogs and dinghys. I'm fortunate to have other freestone rivers on my door step for the same price for the whole season, but always thought of a day on the Wharfe as a nice change. However at £30 it has now put itself in the once or twice a season treat bracket for me, along with the likes of the Wye at Bakewell (£40 per day) Driffield Beck (between £45 and £60 depending on date) Wye at Monsal Dale (£35) and the Wharfe at Kilnsey (I think about £45 but might be £50 now). To be honest when put in the same bracket as these other fisheries for me it really isn't value for money. If I paid £30 to fish Boton Abbey I would probably begruge the cost all day and even on the way home and for a few days after be grumbling, where as £60 at Driffield Beck and the price would be forgotten as soon as I spotted the first fish.

Just my thoughts and ramblings really.

Cheers

I believe the thinking behind Bolton Abbeys price increase is to bring their prices in to line with comparable fisheries on the Wharfe i.e. Burnsall and Kilnsey. As a former member at Bolton Abbey and now a member of the Burnsall club I personally find the day ticket prices for both stretches too high. At Burnsall our thinking was to increase our day ticket income whilst keeping the angling pressure at a reasonable level for members, we were also mindful of the fact that Kilnsey had increased their prices to £50. I voted against our clubs past two increases because although at Burnsall we don’t suffer tourist interference to the same extent as Bolton Abbey and this should be reflected in our prices, I still find our prices excessive and I believe these higher prices lead to less people taking up our sport in regards to river fishing. At our last two AGMs where we voted on bringing our prices into line with Kilnsey I voted against because I could see that once we increased our prices Bolton Abbey would do the same and then the following year we would increase again and it would begin to spiral. Historically Bolton Abbey prices have always been comparable to £5 below Burnsall, watch out because at our next AGM when the issue of day tickets is brought up and we vote for another increase in prices, Bolton Abbey may follow suit a season later.

Grayling ???

Does the stretch of water in question have many grayling in it?

I will be stopping in a cottage near Kilnsey with the family over half term this february. With the trout season being will and truly closed i assumed the Warfe would be out of action, but by the looks of it you can get grayling day tickets. Anyone had any luck with them on the either the Bolton Abbey or the Burnsall beats. Are they the same price as the Trout ones??

Or should i be looking to go somewhere else, any suggestions would be gratefully received.

Thanks

Hi Phil
I think Bolton Abbey is closed now but not for season tickets. I do not know about Burnsall or Kilnsey though.

Hi Rob

Eventually a point will be reached where the price is too great for the demand and the fisheries concerned sell fewer day tickets and income generated from these sales will drop. Do the clubs then increase membership/season ticket fees to compensate? Will some members/season ticket holders then drop out if the price rises too much? How many present members first introduction to fishing the waters was on a day ticket? How many future potential members will be lost if they never fish on a day ticket due to price resistance?

I know the above is full of ifs buts and maybes but I believe that ever increasing prices in any market place without sufficient demand to justify the price hikes is the road to ruin! Now if the fisheries are over fished with people on day tickets then by all means put the prices up, but if less and less people are buying day tickets and the price hikes are too replace lost income then it can only lead to a downward spiral.

Having said all that I do however believe that a fishery should be free to run and manage it's waters as it sees fit including fishery rules and pricing policy but as a Yorkshireman I will always look at value for money. I've had some great days at Bolton Abbey and Burnsall but I stopped fishing Burnsall after the last price hike and I'll now probably stop fishing Bolton Abbey now and whilst a little sad I know the North is full of fantastic river fishing at realistic prices just waiting for meto discover them.

Cheers

The Kilnsey day ticket at £50 is absolutely outrageous - is this to recoup some funds from the purchase of the pellet pigs they tend to throw in there?
It's not like you can choose where to fish on the river either....
M
I'd say a £50 day ticket is a "we don't really want to sell you a day ticket" day ticket, if you get my drift.......

But what a lovely place to fish
When i first fished the Wharfe at bolton abbey some maybe 35 years ago,for a junior i paid around 60p if i remember right, and the last time was over ten years ago, i paid around a tenner
And you was lucky to see another angler all day, good VFM 5 miles of river to ourselves for 60p
Times change, looks like they certainly have there
Dont know if i would pay the price now as it seems a little commercialised for day trippers
