One of the best lines from Les Dennis ..... "I don't know much about fishing. I don't even know how to put the fly onto the end of the hook."
Before anyone mentions it, no they weren't dapping. ?
Did anyone else cringe when they showed the footage of Pacific pink salmon jumping up a waterfall and swimming around when discussing the lifecycle of Scottish salmon? I'm only surprised that they didn't show bears fishing them out! Absolutely unforgivable!
I'm starting to think the secret to producing anything watchable is getting rid of the celebrities, last one was the Robson Green show, this one is random B listers, without them in it they would have to make an actual programme, and that is what is missing.
If I thought I was purely going to watch an angling programme, I wouldn't have bothered watching it. But as it was a light entertainment programme it was good fun. Most none angling viewers wouldn't know the difference with the Salmon species featured but a little education wouldn't have hurt. The Pinks and Sockeye shouldn't have been included in a Scottish based programme and certainly did give the wrong impression. Poor directing with the research part. Other than that I enjoyed it.
As I said in another thread, I'd love to have been a fly on the wall if one of the production team had handed that footage to Hugh Falkus when he was making Salmo The Leaper!
To be fair it's a mass audience programme and has to be because the market for "real" fishing programmes is tiny. Yes it's grim, but so was Nick Hancock's series up at Scourie many years ago.
I watched an episode of that Scourie series, that really was diabolical. I won't be watching this Lochs and Rivers one as all of the celebrities on it are disagreeable to me in one way or another, but I'm not against angling being a bit more in the public eye, as long as it gives a positive view obviously. I doubt programmes like this do the angling "cause" much harm. Probably the opposite.
It's my own problem that I find most of the people they choose to feature irritating as fk.
My thoughts too, a real who's that of the 'celebrity' world, in my view.
Mind you, it seems that if someone has once been a passer by in the street on Doctors they're billed as a celebrity these days.
