Read weekly Fontburn Reservoir Fishing reports here.

Fontburn is one of the most popular fisheries in Northumberland. This is due partly to its convenient location for Tyneside, but more importantly to its worthy reputation for producing large numbers of quality home reared trout throughout the season.

Weekly Ranger’s review:

Fishery Headline: “Fin-tastic” Fontburn

Hardy anglers started queuing from as early as 2.30am on Saturday morning to claim their favourite spot on the banks eager to see in the start of the season at Fontburn. Despite the struggling water temperatures keeping the fish tightly shoaled, the shallower waters catching the warm sunshine did prove very productive, especially with Ledgered Powerbaits tipped with worm close to the shoreline.

Regular Ken Allen from North Shields caught two very nice Rainbows by the jetty on Green Powerbait tipping the scales at 5lb and 3lb 7oz. Further up the bank young Steven Olsen showed his Dad, Albert how it’s done, by catching their entire six Rainbows.

Other hot spots over the weekend included the North Shore point and the corner of the Dam Wall where fish could be found feeding in the shallows. S. Parker caught a cracking 6lb 9oz Rainbow along with three others for a total weight of 13lb 4oz.

C. Bradley, D. Hall and D. Edwington were just some of the anglers who took limit catches on what has to be one of the best opening days we have enjoyed in recent years.

More fine specimens are due to be stocked from our own fish farm and with a double stocking planned for the Easter holidays we are sure to have some excellent sport to report in the coming weeks.

The brighter days have produced some good sport this week; those anglers who have used various methods to locate the feeding have been well rewarded.

Sid Barnes a regular at Fontburn had a great day with a total of 7 Blues and Rainbows weighing 21lb 4oz, which included two Rainbows at 5lb and 4lb 4oz. Sid’s secret was fishing with a variety of baits changing hook lengths to locate the fish throughout the day, his favoured spot being on the North Shore just before the Dam Wall.

Kyle Whellans had a fantastic 3rd birthday fishing with his dad, catching a 3lb 8oz Rainbow. In total the pair caught a mixture of 6 Blues and Rainbows weighing 16lb 4oz, fishing further up the North Shore using Ledgered Orange Powerbait.

Dale Scott also took a fine 8 fish limit catch of mixed Blues and Rainbows, weighing a total of 24lb which included four Blues weighing 3lb or over.

Fishery Headline: “Super Six for Sid”

Anglers have found braving the harsh weather conditions to be worth it, with a great selection of Rainbows and Blues being caught. The North shore is still the favoured spot, though anglers are encouraged to move around trying different areas to achieve the better catches.

Fish have been attracted to the brighter coloured Powerbaits such as Sunshine Yellow, with the Dawsons Olive being the most successful fly this week.

After facing the high winds and rain Sid Barnes was well rewarded with the fish of the week a 6lb 12oz Rainbow. Sid caught a mixture of six Blues and Rainbows weighing a total of 19lb 8oz, using ledgered Yellow Powerbait, from the North Shore just before the Dam Wall.

G Bamford also fishing on the North Shore caught two fine Blues weighing 4lb 8oz and 3lb 8oz, while P Crompton also caught a cracking 4lb Rainbow.

The improved weather conditions have brought some great catches this week, with many anglers leaving with their eight fish limit. The Dam wall and the South shore are proving to be hot spots, with many anglers taking fish on worm.

Mick Elliott from Washington was ecstatic to catch the first Golden Trout of the season, fishing just off the South Shore car park using Ledgered Yellow Powerbait he hooked and landed a cracking “Goldie” claiming the £150 sweeps pools as well.

Peter Kerswell aged 5 fishing with his Grandad caught a nice 3 ½ lb Rainbow, fishing off the South Shore with ledgered Orange Powerbait.

William Neal caught the heaviest fish this week a cracking 4lb 12oz lb Rainbow which was tempted on float fished worm.

A day out fishing is very popular with families at Fontburn. The Marshall family enjoyed their visit and whilst Dad looked on Calvin Marshall aged 7 had a wonderful day in the sun catching a 3lb Rainbow, his sister Tayla aged 8 also caught a fine 3lb Blue.

Another pair of keen young anglers were Brandon Lee aged 9 and sister Shannon aged 8 who both caught Rainbows weighing 4 ½ lb each on worm.

Fishery Headline: The Kids are alright!

Warmer weather conditions and clearer water aided a continued improvement in catches this week with young anglers doing especially well as the fish move into warmer shallower waters to feed. The area around the North shore jetty was most productive with anglers consistently reaching their catch limits. Those fishing on the fly enjoyed good evening rises in the shallower bays too.

As the Easter holidays drew to an end it was the youngsters who were showing the grown-ups how to do it. Among the young champs was Josh Bowden, 5, from Ashington with a 3.5 lb rainbow taken with worm on the float. Again on the float, young Robbie Potter from Whitley Bay impressed dad Ken with his 3 lb Blue caught on pink eggs. Brothers Jamie (6) and Dillon (7) Sweet from Linton landed the majority of their family’s catch including a 3 lb rainbow with ledgered green Power bait.

Happiest of all however was 11 year old Steven Olsen fishing with dad Albert as they reached their 8 fish catch limit by 10am they then purchased another permit and continued fishing to take their days total to 16. All of the fish were caught ledgering with orange Powerbait eggs

Another Golden Trout prize was paid out to Jonathan Caisley from Whickham this week who struck gold on the south shore spillway using ledgered orange Power bait.

S. Sinnott and J. Vout each took home full limit catches weighing in at 31 lbs and 18.5 lbs respectively

Fishery Headline: “Fantastic five”

Warmer weather conditions have produced some fantastic fishing this week, with the rod average reaching five for the week.
The majority of anglers have reached their catch limits in good time, some in as little as two hours.
The favoured spots have been off the south shore car park and the dam wall; however those anglers who have explored the top end north and south shore spots have also been rewarded.
Fly anglers have had some excellent sport with lures such as the Olive Devil fished just below the surface on intermediate line and retrieved slowly.

Fontburn regular Peter Clarke was ecstatic to catch the third Golden Trout of the season on Ledgered white Powerbait eggs along with seven other rainbows. Peter caught all of his fish from the north shore and went home a very happy angler having had a fantastic days fishing and winning £150 in the sweep.

Andrew Young- aged 12 from Amble also had a fantastic day fishing at the top of north shore using ledgered orange Powerbait he landed a cracking 3lb 12oz rainbow, along with seven other mixed rainbows and blues.

Fishery Headline: Double stocking has the fishing rocking

Spring despite the odd brief wintery shower, is slowly but surely setting in at Fontburn.

The few showers were often immediately followed by good insect hatches much to the delight of Fly Fishermen who took advantage of the evening rises. Regular angler J. Brennand was amazed to witness a second take on the dropper while he was playing in a Rainbow already caught on the point fly, two trout caught from a single cast!

Good catches have been commonplace this week Mr B. Norman caught 3 Rainbows and 5 Blues totalling 19.25 lbs including fish of 3lbs 12oz and 4 lbs. Other notable catches included Mr. M. Lawtry with 7 hard fighting Blues and 1 Rainbow totalling 18.5 lbs with four others caught on the fly and returned. Brothers and regular Fontburn double act Ian and George Webber had an extra close competition this week both caught limit catches with Ian edging it by a few ounces.

The younsters kept up the good work too as Emrah Yamut (10) caught a 3 lbs Rainbow with ledgered Power Bait eggs. 12 year olds Elly Calvert and Brandon McCabe took a 3 lbs Rainbow and blue respectively, both caught from the Dam wall using float fished worm.

Fishery Headline: Angler Gets Gold But Not the Pot!

With the breeze coming from the North East it was the sheltered area of the North Shore top section which was most productive for the majority of anglers.

Mr B. Reed recorded the best catch of the week weighing in at a total of 20lb, which included six rainbows, one blue and a Golden Trout, unfortunately Mr Reed had not entered the sweepstake so was unable to claim the £200 prize money.

Good catches have been common place at Fontburn this week. Ian Frier and L. Maddison both with catch limits consisting of seven rainbows and one blue. Sid Barnes caught three rainbows and five blues weighing at total of 16lb 4oz, while S. Sinnott had a catch weighing 17lb in total of five blues.

Morpeth Lions Charity Match took place at the weekend with a number of limit catches being weighed in by lunchtime. The Senior competition winners were Ian Garrett with a total catch weighing 15lb 9oz, while L. Surtees caught the largest fish weighing 2lb 12oz. Ethan Marshall and Toni Williamson both twelve years old claimed the Junior competition with a total catch weight of 11lb 10oz and the heaviest fish weighing 2lb 5oz respectively. Rob Hudson and Sid Dixie won the OAP/Disabled competition. Congratulations to the winners.

Fishery Headline: “Super six”- Can it get any better?

Once again anglers have enjoyed some exceptional fishing this week. The fish have responded well with a variety of baits and flies producing excellent catches. Spinning is definitely worth a try now with a small gold Mepps being the top choice.

Morning and late afternoon has been the best time for fly anglers with the Black Fritz being the number one choice on a floating or intermediate line. All areas have produced fish however the top end of the South Shore and the Dam Wall have been the most productive.

Regular Jack Vout was quick to reach his limit, with a total of 8 Blues for 18lb including one fine fish at 3 1/2lb caught with Ledgered Orange Powerbait from the North Shore.
A very keen young angler, 7 year old John Cook enjoyed a days fishing catching a 3 1/2lb Blue, John tempted this fine fish with Ledgered Sweetcorn and Yellow Powerbait.

Fishery Headline: First Time, First Cast, First Class

On his first fishing trip 7 year old Aiden Pallin was happy to give his father an angling lesson by catching some quality fish. With his very first cast the youngster landed a fine 2.5 lbs Blue shortly followed up with a further 2 Rainbows – all before lunch! His successful technique was to use a short cast down the margin using float fished worm and Powerbait.
It was a similar story for John Levison whose long casts failed to impress partner Tonie or sons Liam (9) and Steven (7) as the youngsters quickly worked their way towards catching their family permit limit using a ledgered cocktail of Orange & Chartreuse PowerBait.
Dad John eventually saved face by catching their final Rainbow of the day to complete their 12 fish limit.
Despite variable wind and weather conditions many other anglers managed to reach their catch limits including D. Hamilton whose Fritz Fly landed him the fish of the season so far, recording an 8lbs Rainbow.
D. Steele also took 7 Rainbows and 1 Blue totalling 16.5 lbs including a 4.5 lbs fish.
J. Brennand also fly fishing in the shallow bays with a Black Fritz and Pheasant Tail Nymph on dropper took 8 Rainbows for 12 lbs on one of his regular afternoon sessions. Other notable catches included C. Garbutt’s 6 Rainbows and 2 Blues totalling 16.5 lbs, B. Green with 7 Rainbows and 1 Blue totalling 13.75 lbs. B. Fishery Headline: Fly on the wall

Fontburn Regular Ian Garrett had a very productive afternoon fly fishing on the dam wall, despite the bright conditions and soaring afternoon temperatures he caught (and released) 10 rainbows. George Wind also fly fishing from the dam wall and north shore took a fine limit catch of 5 Rainbows and 3 Blues totalling 16 lbs.
For bait anglers the most effective tactic was to ledger Powerbait close into the shore as the trout are continuing to feed on fry and minnows.
This was great news for the many families who have ben making the most of the sunny weather over the school holidays and once again the youngsters had no trouble with casting the short distances needed to locate the fish.
Jack Ashurst (5), along with Lewis Barnes (9) showed senior Keith how it was done by landing a cracking 3.25 lbs blue. The youngsters then went on to help them to reach their limit catch of 4 rainbows and 4 blues using ledgered pink Powerbait from the north shore.

John Brennand also had a good day’s sport, Fly Fishing with a Hares Ears, Pheasant Tail and Damsel Nymph catching a fine 8 fish limit which included 5 rainbows and 3 blues. John chose to fish the north shore and using a cast a walk tactic found fish feeding close to the surface less than 10 yards from the shore.

Anglers have enjoyed some fine summer sport and those choosing to fish with fly have had the most success. Fishery Headline: Battling the Blues

Congratulations to 8 year old Neve Pederson, who had a fantastic introduction to angling. On her recent visit to Fontburn Neve landed a 3lb 2oz blue using ledgered maggot and Powerbait in the north shore bay. Granddad Rob McGarr must have wondered who was getting the fishing lesson! Young Neve, from Whitley Bay, carried on to catch 5 of their 6 fish that day to take home a total of 10lb 8oz of both blues and rainbows.
The north shore bay saw some other great blues being caught for J. Herring (3lbs), R. Athey (3lb 8oz), C. Wilson (3lbs 8oz) and K. Wilson (3lbs 11oz) all caught using ledgered Powerbait, while P. Longstaff caught his 3 lbs 9oz specimen on the fly.
On the south shore father and son team C. and H. Graham who were fly fishing in the bay near the nature reserve claimed 6 fish apiece with 9 returned. They recommend Black Pennell flies for best results here. On the same day D. Allison and T. Bailey made limit catches of 11lbs 6oz and 13lbs 2oz respectively. G. Cowley was quick to make his limit catch of 6 rainbows and 2 blues in just three and a half hours.

Fish of the week goes to S. Redshaw for a 4lb rainbow caught on float fished worm, whilst the best catch of the week was taken by Kenny Allman, who tried a couple of different patterns of flies in the south shore bay before getting the hits on a Bibio. Kenny eventually took 7 rainbows and 1 blue for a total weight of over 17lbs. Well done to you both. Other notable catches include A. Bate with 6 rainbows and 2 blues for 15.4oz and A. Agan also with 6 rainbows and 2 blues for 14 lbs.

Best flies:
Black Pennell, Bibio.

Best baits:
Orange Powerbait and Magic Dust in a swimfeeder.
