Fishery Headline: George’s experience pays off

The mild weather continued to stimulate some superb late season sport throughout the week with experienced anglers who took heed of the conditions recording standout catches. George Wind certainly made use of his years of angling experience on his way to a nice eight fish 20lb catch limit. George fished into the prevailing westerly wind in the north shore bay, whilst switching between fly and bait rods throughout the day as and when conditions suited. George also took home the fish of week, a stunning 3lb 8oz blue trout. With substantial hatches still prevalent, fly anglers reported good sport with smaller dry fly patterns generating most interest. Bait anglers favouring float fished worm and Gulp cocktails with some excellent returns as the fish continue to look towards the surface for their feed. Fish continue to feed in large numbers, albeit sporadically, in the margins with the majority of good catches by persistent anglers favouring shorter casts.

Fishery Headline: Tulip blossoms with cracking catch

Cold north easterly winds and frequent showers made for a distinctive autumnal feel at Fontburn this week with the feeding habits of the fish varying daily. Anglers willing to try different areas such as feeder streams and alter tactics to match the changing conditions had the best rewards for their efforts. Peter Stainthorp made his weekly visit on Tuesday and quickly located the depth of shoaling fish in the North Shore Bay. He used float fished Chartreuse PowerBait on a long trace to make a fine catch of seven rainbows and one blue totalling 14lb 13oz. John Tulip made the heaviest catch of the week in just over four hours with six rainbows and two blues totalling 16lb. Fly anglers continue to encounter fish using bright lures sub-surface in wind channels or around fast flowing inlets following heavy rain

Fishery Headline: Norman stands out in the sunshine!

With water levels continuing to rise, cloudy water has remained a prominent and challenging feature at Fontburn this week. Bait anglers favoured brightly coloured baits such as Yellow Gulp Eggs and green worms for the best sport. Fly anglers found conditions very challenging but had some success when favouring lure patterns with an Orange Fritz or Hot Tailed Dawson’s Olive the choice flies. Thursday and Friday saw the reservoir respond to a fresh influx of fish as rod averages spiked to an unbeatable eight fish per angler on an inclement Friday. Bait angler Norman Partis from Ashington recorded the standout catch of the week on a beautiful Thursday. His outstanding 22lb eight fish haul also included the two best fish of the week; a 4lb rainbow trout and 4lb 8oz blue trout. Norman took advantage of the favourable conditions fishing the North Shore Bay favouring float fished Yellow Gulp Eggs. Norman was in good company with several limits and total catch weights of 15lb to 18lb commonplace as the fresh fish feed in numbers.

NEWSFLASH – From Friday 1 November fishing times will be 9am until 3pm. To reflect this, an eight fish permit will be reduced to £16 and a family permit will also be reduced to £23 for 12 fish.

Fishery Headline: Carry On Sid!!

Cooler air, occasional heavy rain and fresh westerly winds did not deter the fish from feeding well at Fontburn this week, especially on the popular north shore. Fly anglers favouring lure patterns and reported some superb takes from larger fish feeding vigorously before the onset of winter. Bait anglers reported steady sport with worm and Red Gulp used in combination offering the most success. Regular fly and bait angler Sid Barnes recorded the fish of the week with a trusty Cat’s Whisker pattern attracting a superb 8lb 9oz Fontburn reared rainbow. Sid kept on the move along the north shore, opting for shorter casts coupled with a quick retrieve and was delighted when his hard work paid off. The Baldwin brothers Nathan and Marcus from Killingworth had an exciting day bait fishing on the north shore. The brothers recorded a superb eight fish catch for a total weight of 16lb with two standout rainbow trout at over 3lb. Numerous other anglers reported respectable eight fish catch limits with dozens of fish weighing in excess of 2lb and overall catch weights commonly reaching the 15lb mark.

NEWSFLASH – From Friday 1 November fishing times will be 9am until 3pm. To reflect this, an eight fish permit will be reduced to £16 and a family permit will also be reduced to £23 for 12 fish.

Fishery Headline: Rod average is five star!

Perfect conditions with optimum water temperatures stimulated sport throughout the week. Shoals of fish were feeding around both the north and south shore margins with minnows enticing fish into some frantic sport. Rod averages peaked at almost seven fish per angler on a well attended Wednesday. Bait angler Craig Ancrum recorded an outstanding catch of 16 fish, taking advantage of the form whilst fishing on a second permit after weighing in eight fish by 9:15am! Craig was not alone; bait and fly anglers reported top catches with limits commonplace. The Bank Holiday weekend continued in the same vein with families out in force and juniors relishing the fantastic sport on offer. Smiles were abound in particular for Joseph Boon aged 10 from Seaton Sluice fishing with dad Steven who was delighted with his first ever Stillwater catch. Kayla Carr aged 5 from Ashington also enjoyed the action fishing with her grandad. The young angler netted five fabulous fish, part of a superb eight fish catch limit including a perfect conditioned 2lb blue trout.

Fishery Headline: Rod averages rocket at Fabulous Fontburn!

The best week of the season was recorded as catch limits were the norm with numerous anglers purchasing second permits to record net busting catches. Bank Holiday Monday saw families out in force to enjoy the decent weather and sport on offer with 50 anglers taking home an average of almost five fish each. This was put in the shade on Tuesday with 22 anglers taking home an average of an unbelievable seven fish, with Mark Allan recording a 19lb 8oz eight fish catch limit by 12:30pm. Friday surpassed even this as 18 attendees recorded an unfathomable average of 8.5 fish per angler, inclusive of numerous fish returned on the fly. Saturday saw Fontburn host the annual Morpeth Lions Charity Competition which in spite of some torrential rain, saw some superb catches and fierce competition. Bait angler George Bamford triumphed in the adult category with his winning total catch weight of 15lb. The prize for heaviest fish in the adult section went to Paul Davison with his 3lb 7oz beauty. The junior section saw Shaun Burton triumph with his outstanding 13lb total catch weight. Shaun McCormack took the plaudits from all in attendance for his heaviest fish winning the junior section. This perfectly conditioned 5lb over wintered rainbow trout was also the fish of the week.

Fishery Headline: John and Family have day to remember!

It was a week of testing conditions with fish rising in response to substantial hatches whilst enjoying frenzied feeding in and around swollen inlets. This favoured anglers who kept on the move and altered tactics to suit the conditions. Bait anglers reported the best sport when favouring sub-surface fishing, especially in bright conditions utilising a worm and PowerBait cocktails. Margins teeming with minnows saw fly anglers, when mimicking minnow patterns with large lures, record some fine catches. Spinning within the margins also generated some fantastic results, especially when using a Silver Toby or Red Flying ‘C’. The story of the week belongs to John Priest fishing with his partner Andrea Crackett and 12 year old daughter Millie. Fishing from the Dam Wall in the north shore bay using float fished worm and PowerBait cocktails, the family readily located shoaling fish on Saturday morning going on to weigh in a seasons best 22 fish for a truly stunning 43lb total catch weight. This quality was on show throughout the week, with numerous fish in excess of 3lb commonplace at the weigh in.

Fishery Headline: Partis On!

Mixed weather conditions with high humidity, bright spells and periods of torrential rain challenged fly and bait anglers alike this week. Cloudy waters with fish feeding in and around swollen inlets ensured anglers needed to use all their savvy to come away with those sought after catch limits. Bait anglers willing to use everything at their disposal such as feeders, worm, PowerBait cocktails and float fished worm saw some top sport as did those altering cast distance to target shoaling fish. A frantic Wednesday saw rod averages spike at over six fish per angler as the reservoir responded to a fresh stocking. Friday saw bait angler Mr. N Partis from Ashington take the plaudits with his loyalty day 10 fish catch limit weighing in for an exceptional 23lb including a nice fish of 4lb. Mr Partis was not alone in terms of quality fish with the average size and superb condition of the stock on offer at Fontburn a talking point all week long.

Fishery Headline: Good margins at Fontburn!

Dull and cloudy conditions with frequent showers prevailed this week and the lack of bright sunshine kept fish in the shallows. Fish continued to surface feed throughout the week taking a variety of natural patterns and imitations around feeder streams helping to sustain a rod average around three fish per angler. Keith Jury favoured short casts around the north shore burn to take six rainbows and two blues totalling 19lb 9oz. Mr. J Norman made the heaviest catch of the week with eight rainbows weighing a hefty 21lb 4oz with a 4lb 4oz best fish. This was just beaten by Mr. J Robinsons for the fish of the week with a 4lb 8oz cracker. Other notable catches include Paul Robinson with eight fish totalling 20lb 8oz while Gerry and Irene McKever who took a 12 fish weighing 22lb 4oz from the north shore. Fly anglers found some excellent sport as Sid Barnes had six rainbows totalling 14lb with a further five returned using a Cat’s Whisker and Pheasant Tail Nymph. Mr. T Samson made two Credit Cruncher visits during the week returning six fish on his first outing and subsequently taking four blues weighing 8lb 4oz with another 17 fish returned on his second visit.

Fishery Headline: £200 Tag – Great Scott !

Summer well and truly arrived this week as temperatures soared and bright sunshine kept fish deep during the middle of the day. It was early mornings and late afternoon when the best catches were made as fish rose to take advantage of natural hatches.
James Scott from North Shields was celebrating a double achievement when son Leon aged six caught his first ever fish from the south shore bay. This was shortly followed by James’s first bite of the day which turned out to be a tagged rainbow taken on ledgered Orange PowerBait Eggs. At the same time, only a few yards away, four year old Maggie Richardson from Gosforth caught her first ever fish, a 2lb rainbow caught on float fished Orange PowerBait Eggs and worm. Mr. M Vowles recorded the best fish of the week with a 4lb 8oz rainbow whilst Mr. D Cray had the heaviest eight fish catch of rainbows weighing 18lb 8oz. Other notable catches were signed out by Jack Vout who took just five hours fishing by the north shore burn to land eight fish totalling 17lb 12oz. Hirst Park Trout Ticklers also visited Fontburn on Saturday and despite sizzling temperatures all parties went home with a fish in the net. They are now looking forward to their next outing scheduled for 13 July at Derwent reservoir where members old and new will be warmly welcomed.

Fishery Headline: What a Corker!

Mixed weather tested anglers throughout the week with extreme heat and brightness interspersed with duller and wetter periods causing shoals of fish to move from margins to deeper waters and feed sporadically throughout. The overall picture remained positive with some outstanding catches reported, especially from anglers altering tactics and location whilst actively seeking lively swims and feeding fish. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday saw rod averages surge to above four fish per angler with fly and bait anglers enjoying the quality sport on offer. Bait angler Mr. M Corker was delighted with the standout fish of the week, an outstanding 7lb rainbow trout, one of an eight fish limit weighing in for a superb 20lb total. All were caught during a frenetic session whilst fishing from the Dam Wall on Thursday. The form remained decent into a challenging weekend with The Hunter family from Wideopen making hay on the north shore point, eventually claiming their 12 fish limit for an unsurpassed 24lb 8oz total. Rory and Sharon were fishing with their two children and favoured ledger tactics along with casts into deeper water helping to overcome the extreme brightness on a scorching Saturday.

Fishery Headline: Delight for Barry

Increased humidity and some scorching days combined with steadily dropping water levels pushed margin water temperatures into the high teens this week and created a challenging environment for bait and fly anglers alike. Bait anglers favouring longer casts, ledger tactics and PowerBait reporting the best sport, whereas fly anglers had some joy keeping on the move and changing patterns to target rises. Rod averages spiked at over six fish per angler on Wednesday with some superb early morning sport providing some real excitement. No one was more delighted than bait angler Barry Knight who claimed the fish of the week; an outstanding 6lb rainbow trout. Thursday continued to provide some excellent reports with Mr. K Fairbairn a class apart as he claimed his eight fish catch limit inside three hours for a truly outstanding 24lb total. With the holiday season now upon us the weekend saw a healthy number of juniors enjoying their angling. Adam Holland, aged 9 from Hadston was celebrating his first ever fish; a 2lb rainbow trout. Riley Ballance, aged 6, was also delighted with his 2lb blue trout. Both boys recorded their catches on the popular north shore.

Fishery Headline: Bright day for Foggon!

Periods of heavy rainfall followed by hotter brighter days presented obvious challenges throughout the week as fish moved from deeper, cooler waters to margins and vice versa on a daily basis. Anglers who altered tactics and carefully considered the prevailing conditions made the best of some tougher days. Thursday provided the outstanding sport as the reservoir responded to a fresh influx of stocked fish. The rod average for the day was in excess of a brilliant five fish per angler, with fish over the 4lb mark making a few appearances. It was eventually a tremendous 5lb 4oz rainbow trout that took the fish of the week plaudits, leaving bait angler Trevor Foggon delighted; Trevor recorded his standout fish in the ever popular north shore bay. Regular bait angler John Tulip from Stamfordham was among numerous anglers who recorded eight and 12 fish catch limits with John proudly weighing his eight fish for a superb 20lb total weight. The Webber family also had a day to remember with dad Gerry fishing alongside daughters Millie aged 10 and Hattie aged 9. The trio eventually recorded a staggering 18 fish for a stunning total catch weight of 46lb 12oz! Naturally this included some superb trout with four of the fish weighing in at over the 3lb mark. Catch quality was a hot topic throughout the week with a multitude of 3lb and above fish leaving anglers more than happy with their days sport.

Fishery Headline: Unseasonable wind ruins summer sport

The inclement weather dominated proceedings throughout a blustery and blowy week with winds gusting upwards of 50mph in the uplands of north Northumberland. Anglers, hardy enough to fish into the oncoming wind, reported the most consistent catches and sport. Fly anglers evidently struggled to command the waters so it was bait anglers favouring weighty ledger rigs who had most joy. Falling water temperatures, especially in the shallow bays and margins, brought bottom feeding fish closer to the shoreline where an array of healthy catches were taken. Again, the quality of the Fontburn stock was in evidence with an array of fish exceeding 2lb 8oz. A calmer and well attended Friday saw the best sport of the week with Mr. A Bell and Mr. T Hall weighing in eight fish catches for superb 20lb total weights. Juniors also enjoyed the day with one or two first time catches in evidence. Nine year old Thomas Sheard and five year old Lewis Marchant both proudly took home their first ever fish. An exceptionally windy Saturday continued the good form with the south shore bay seeing anglers reporting some fine catches. Les Little certainly stood up to the gales, eventually weighing in the fish of the week; a 4lb 5oz blue trout.

Fishery Headline New Bait Creates Buzz

Mild conditions with light winds favoured anglers this week with occasional showers maintaining water levels and keeping temperatures stable. Large numbers of fry in the shallows meant spinners and lures were getting bites. However, it was the new PowerBait Mouse Tails that got the banks buzzing as word spread the new artificial worms were enticing bites. Among those finding success with the latest Berkley bait were John Tulip with seven rainbows totalling 11lb from the north shore bay and couple Mandy Bennett and Stephen Black who signed out an impressive nine rainbows plus a 3lb 3oz blue caught near the north shore burn on a Pink and White Mouse Tail. Mr. S Watts used Orange PowerBait to tempt three fish totalling 9lb 12oz along with the fish of the week; a 4lb 4oz Blue. Other notable catches include Mr. R Phizacklea’s seven rainbows totalling 10lb 8oz and the Welch family’s 11 rainbows and 1 blue weighing a respectable 18lb.

Fishery Headline: Tactical change brings rewards

Fresher conditions this week brought a welcome boost to rod averages as fish continue feeding in shallow water and around feeder streams after occasional showers. Those anglers who have changed their tactics and been prepared to move have recorded the best catches. Peter Stainthorpe was finding ledgering a little slow and after spotting trout chasing minnows and fry in the margins he changed his set to match. Fishing with a lure Peter enjoyed instant action resulting in a fine limit catch of rainbows for 15lb 10oz. Other notable catches included Paul Dodds’ limit catch of rainbows totalling 13lb 12oz caught on Swimfeeder and PowerBait tactics in the North Shore Bay. Jim Black landed 6 rainbows and 1 blue for 13lb 15oz including a 3lb 3oz best fish. C. Smith recorded 7 rainbows for 15lbs whilst T. Clayton took a fine brace one at 3lb and one at 4lb.

Fishery Headline Craig Takes Home a Beauty!

The Indian summer continued throughout as misty, mild starts gave way to glorious late summer weather. Shoals reacted by feeding early, often rising in numbers under the cover of the morning half light, switching to sub-surface feeding as the margins warmed and brightness set in. It was a great week for fly anglers as fish rose in numbers, homing in on some substantial hatches. Those who favoured floating lines and dry flies had the most joy during the misty morning sessions, whilst wet fly patterns and intermediate lines worked best throughout the brighter afternoons and evenings. It was also a fantastic week for bait anglers, especially in respect to larger 3lb specimens. Steven Vivian was delighted with his 3lb 8oz trout taken from the Dam Wall on Tuesday, one of an eight fish catch limit weighing an impressive 15lb 8oz. George Aylesworth and Mr. D Bibby also weighed in 3lb 4oz and 4lb 4oz fish respectively as the week progressed. Craig Ancrum saved the best until last after a cracking day taking a superb 6lb 12oz rainbow trout with his last cast. Craig was fishing the north shore on Sunday and claimed his standout fish using the increasingly popular and effective PowerBait Mousetails.

Fishery Headline: Thomas Takes £200!

Another unseasonably mild week saw some superb sporting action during some well attended days. Both fly and bait anglers found that short casting and sticking to the margins produced the best results. Bait anglers letting bubble floats drift to within a couple of feet of the bank side reported catch after catch, whilst fly anglers fishing along margins teeming with minnows found lure patterns had the best results. Bait angler Ray Hardisty enjoyed his day on Monday weighing in this weeks standout 4lb 8oz rainbow trout which was part of a six fish catch weighing in for an impressive 14lb. Thursday saw some frenetic rod action as 400 stocked fish livened up proceedings with an eventual rod average of six fish per angler. The outstanding form continued into the weekend with Thomas Jarvis from Lemington claiming the latest £200 cash prize with his tagged blue trout. Thomas, fishing the north shore point, jumped for joy when he saw the prize winning tag which was caught on the ledger close to the bank with PowerBait and worm cocktail.

Fishery Headline: Two Tags Top Off Twelve Trout Ticket!

The Indian summer came to a rather abrupt end this week with autumnal wind and rain making appearances towards the end of the week. This change in conditions saw a change in fish behaviour as trout seemed to switch from feeding on fry and minnows in the margins to congregating around swollen feeder streams. However, there was sport aplenty with two mid-week stockings sustaining the action, particularly for those using spinner or lure tactics. Some impressive limit catches were recorded from various locations along the north shore. Mr. A Murray and Mr. T Gibbons both signed out with eight rainbows totalling 15lb 4oz and 15lb 8oz respectively. Mr. J Hope netted the heaviest eight fish catch weighing 16lb 8oz and Mr. B Underwood landed the fish of the week; a 3lb 4oz rainbow. However, it was undoubtedly couple led by Audrey Jack who had the catch of week, maybe even the year, with 12 rainbows for a whopping 19lb which also included two tagged fish earning an equally whopping £400 payout from the tagged fish pool. On fly, Sid Barnes and John Summerbell found a Cat’s Whisker to be the on form lure with Sid taking seven rainbows totalling 13lb plus two fish returned whilst John caught and released four rainbows using the same pattern.

Fishery Headline: Hats off to Peter

Mixed weather throughout the week matched the fortunes of both fly and bait anglers as a quiet few days early week gave way to some outstanding autumnal sport. The north shore proved to be the favoured spot as fish shoaled along margins with their backs to the prevailing westerly winds. Anglers fishing to the conditions favoured swim-feeders, whilst cocktailing PowerBait and worm claimed some superb catches. Thursday saw rod averages spike to an impressive 5.4 fish per angler as fresh stock was introduced to the reservoir and the positive form continued into Friday with 61 fish recorded by 25 satisfied anglers. Friday also saw bait angler Peter Stainthorp claim the catch of the week with his eight fish limit weighing in for an unsurpassed 15lb 8oz. The weekend also saw some success, in particular for bait angler John Waterston who was delighted with his outstanding eight fish net taken from the north shore bay on Saturday. John chose to utilise a swim-feeder, fishing off the bottom, with a deadly Orange PowerBait Paste and Yellow Gulp Eggs hook bait combination.
