Fishery Headline: Keith Makes His Own Luck!

A testing week for anglers as some unsettled weather muddied waters, pushing shoals into deeper swims. Anglers who were positive as well as creative, trying differing tactics and keeping on the move reported some good sport. Indeed, bait anglers who went on the attack, making use of feeders packed with Magic Dust as well as combined baits of brightly coloured PowerBait and worm saw improved returns. Keith Rickman was one such hard working angler and had a day to remember on Saturday bucking the trend recording a fine six fish including the latest £200 tagged sweep winner. Keith made his own luck by going all out with a feeder rig, incorporating a cocktail of Chartreuse and Pink PowerBait Eggs. Tuesday saw the fish of the week, a nicely conditioned 3lb 8oz rainbow trout taken by bait angler Jimmy Hui. Jimmy and fishing partner Tommy Gibbons again worked hard for a combined total of seven fish weighing in for a superb 18lb total. Tommy and Jimmy also favoured feeders and brightly coloured baits popped up off the bottom.

Fishery Headline: Fontburn a ‘Fine Specimen’

Another week of improved weather and equally impressive sport with Fontburn reared specimens once again stealing the headlines. Banks on both the north and south of the reservoir delivered exceptional action throughout the week with fly and bait anglers taking an equal share of the spoils. Alan Stoker was the first angler to weigh in a monster specimen trout whilst bait fishing on Wednesday. Alan was fishing around the mid-point of the south shore when he struck a huge fish and when he eventually bought it to the net the smile said it all! An incredible 10lb 10oz rainbow trout and the fully finned specimen proved to be the catch of the week. Alan opted for Rainbow PowerBait Paste and a ledger setup - Well done to Alan. He was not alone; on a fine Friday first time visitor Johnny Powell, all the way from Dorset, fly fished his way to another 10lb cracker. This time it was the north shore west bay where Johnny opted for a Montana Nymph as the point fly to attract his catch. It wasn’t all about big fish, as the fishery recorded yet another tagged fish on Saturday with Michael Clements the delighted party. Michael recorded his £200 winner from the Dam Wall with Pink PowerBait Eggs the successful hook bait. Bait angler John Adamson recorded the overall catch of the week on Tuesday, an unsurpassed 22lb eight fish limit catch with a stunning brace at 4lb and 4lb 6oz respectively. All of this aside, it was great to see so many juniors enjoying the half-term sport and the improved weather. The fishery was very well attended throughout the week, with juniors out fishing parents and guardians on countless occasions - well done to all!

Fishery Headline: Couple land top catch

This week Fontburn experienced conditions from all four seasons and those anglers who adapted to the changing conditions landed some fine fish. On the colder breezy days ledgered PowerBait or Swim feeder rigs produced the better catches from deeper water. In the spring-like conditions toward the end of the week the trout moved closer in to the margins and float fished baits came into their own.
Regulars Gerry and Irene McKever had no difficulty in catching their 12 fish catch limit weighing in at 23lb from the North Shore middle section. All of their fish were taken on ledgered Pink PowerBait eggs. Trevor Gould also fishing from the North shore recorded the best 8 fish catch of the week at 18lb 2oz which included a stunning conditioned 3lb 4oz rainbow. The heaviest rainbow of the week weighed in at 3lb 5oz and was caught by Mr D. Mould.

Fishery Headline: Mark and Grace take top place

Anglers enjoyed some fine sport this week as the total number of fish caught for season passed the 1,000 mark with this week’s average at just under 4 fish per visit. Mark and Grace Flanighan from Widdrington fishing on a couples permit were delighted when they weighed in their 11 fish catch weighing in at 31lbs, a great catch with a near 3lb per fish average. The couple were fishing in their favourite spot around the north shore burn, and used ledger tactics with a variety of PowerBait to land their impressive catch. The heaviest fish of the week was caught by Josh Derbyshire at 4lb 8oz along with 7 other beauties in a 21lb 8oz haul. He was not alone, with bait anglers in particular making hay in the improved and more settled conditions. Fly anglers reported some fine sport too, with lure patterns working well in the cool waters. Regular fly angler John Summerbell recorded 5 fish whilst keeping on the move targeting shoals of feeding fish with his Cat’s Whisker pattern. Overall it’s been a great start to the season and prospects remain good as we move into the busy Easter period.

Fishery Headline: Week of Wonder!

An exceptional week of sport with some truly amazing angling as the warm weather and rising water temperatures brought the reservoir to life. Overall it was a week of quantity and quality with limit catches galore and ecstatic anglers were the rule rather than the exception. Some 572 fish were weighed in by 138 delighted anglers, representing over a third of the total return for the 2017 season! As such it was very difficult to pick out the highlights. Nonetheless, regular bait angler David Mould did his best to steal the show, recording a stunning 16 fish from two eight fish permits on a sultry Saturday. David chose to fish the south shore bay and was amazed by the frantic sport throughout his session, as his bubble float rig was perfect foil for the stocks gathered in the margins. The rod average over the weekend spiked at just under five fish per angler, as the reservoir delivered on its early season promise and set up everything for a glorious sporting Easter. The early part of the week too saw some significant sport, not least for fly angler William Gordon from North Shields. Mr Gordon recorded the week’s top trout; a 4lb 8oz beauty. He opted for the ever popular Cat’s Whisker lure pattern and the trout were powerless to resist - with William eventually recording seven fish for a superb 16lb total weight.

Fishery Headline: King Kevin!

A good week at Kielder was summarised by a rod average increase to the highest of the season so far at well over three fish per angler. Mr. K Griffiths caught a 5lb rainbow which is the heaviest so far this season at Hawkhope on PowerBait. Hawkhope has fished well all week and Mr. D Parker was another angler to benefit netting a total catch of 13lb caught on PowerBait. However, this was beaten by the Kevin Glendinning who netted eight fish for a total weight of 17lb 4oz from Gordon’s Walls on the north shore.

Fishery Headline: Taking it to the limit

Another fantastic week of sport at Fontburn with many anglers taking home limit catches with anglers commenting on the great quality trout. Mr. J Harland recorded the best fish and best collective catch of the week with a cracking fully finned 6lb 4oz rainbow along with seven others tipping the scale at 22lb! The south shore has again provided the best of the sport and Mr. J Black was one of many who heeded the Ranger’s advice and was well rewarded catching his limit which included a 4lb 10oz beauty, then going on to net a further four fish on a second permit. Only two of his fish were less than 2lb in weight! Mr. J Coxford was one of many taking catch limits home, his total weight tipped the scales at 19lb 4oz. As temperatures slowly rise we should soon see some cracking top water sport developing. Best areas to watch for are the south shore bay and around the north shore point. Multi stockings of our quality trout will continue throughout the week to ensure the sport and fish are as equally spread out to all visitors as possible.

Fishery Headline: Specimens push catch weights to over 20lb

Mild, dry weather saw water levels drop slightly with temperatures hovering around the optimal 10 degrees mark and fish continue to actively feed in the ideal spring conditions. Ledgered bait or feeder tactics continue to be most productive, particularly in the shallow bays, whilst fishing the leeward bank in a light breeze will generally provide more consistent sport. It was the catches which included a specimen or two which made the most notable catch returns such as that from M and J. Longstaff. They netted 12 fish on a family permit with a total of eight rainbows and four blues totalling 22lb 8oz and included beauties of 4lb 8oz and 5lb. These were taken on ledgered PowerBait from the south shore bay. Meanwhile Mr. J Richardson opted for the north shore to make a limit catch of eight rainbows totalling 20lb 12oz which was the heaviest eight fish catch of the week. This included two fish over 4lb also taken on ledgered PowerBait, a ‘must use’ so far this season and a vital part of the anglers’ armoury. Mr. S Balory signed out a 19lb 8oz limit catch of eight rainbows whilst regulars Ian Salmon and Paul Dodds fished the north shore bay using feeder tactics to record eight fish limit catches totalling 14lb 8oz and 16lb 8oz respectively.

Fishery Headline: Lions Roar!

The ongoing testing weather served up a challenge to our fly and bait anglers but it was one they proved equal to. An outstanding 528 fish were eventually weighed in from 177 anglers. It was a well attended week, topped with the May Day bank holiday and tailed with a weekend which saw the annual Morpeth Lions Charity competition take place. 52 adult and junior competitors battled it out for honours with bait angler Les Little claiming the heaviest catch in the adult category. His winning eight fish limit came in at a whopping 17lb 7oz! Les weighed in his prize winning haul prior to midday and continues his great form in various Northumbrian Water sponsored competitions! The heaviest fish belonged to Fontburn regular George Clark from Morpeth who was delighted with his 3lb 8oz specimen rainbow trout. The junior section saw Shay Gofton take first place with his 7lb heaviest catch with Jake McCormack taking the heaviest fish prize with his 2lb 2oz rainbow trout. Well done and thank you to all who supported the event on the day. The best of the rest saw fly angler Michael Lawery from Blyth record the weeks best fish and overall catch with a magnificent 4lb 9oz specimen, one of 12 fish (with four returned) for a combined weight total of 30lb. Michael was not alone, with numerous anglers delighted at the calibre of the sport and quantity of fish weighing in at 2lb 8oz or above mark.

Fishery Headline: Jonathan Leads the ‘Weigh’

A stunning week of sport as the weather improved and led to periods of frenzied feeding throughout some tiptop sporting days. Large shoals hunted margin feeding minnows and were ready to rise in the face of some monumental fly hatches. Perfect conditions for both the fish and savvy angler, borne out by the numbers: 515 fish declared, from 124 anglers culminating in an exceptional rod average of over four fish! Jonathan Caisley stole the show as early as Monday with a truly headline grabbing session. Bait angler Jonathan, a Fontburn devotee, opted to fish the south shore bay on a blustery Monday and this sheltered area was the ideal retreat for some great sport. Jonathan weighed in a total of 16 fish (after purchasing a second eight fish permit), including the weeks best trout; a 5lb specimen, for an unbeatable total weight of 38lb 5oz. A simple ledger rig was all it required along with finding exactly where the fish were shoaling up. Fly anglers took advantage of the widespread fly hatches on warmer days with hawthorn flies in particular causing some frantic surface activity. Indeed, Peter Gray enjoyed his session Friday, reporting fine sport as he weighed in four fish and returned a further nine to the reservoir. Once again the overall picture was one of both quantity and quality as the fishery hits a real purple patch with May always one of the best months of the season. As a result the talk on the banks centred around the number of fish in and around the 3lb mark, with anglers comparing catches and filling the ‘big fish’ sheet with a host of quality Fontburn reared specimen trout.

Fishery Headline: The Three Johns!

Another week of challenging weather certainly tested our angler’s ability to adapt with those who were tactically flexible reporting the best results. Large shoals of fish were seen on the rise during warmer intervals and it was the fly anglers who made hay during these frenetic spells. Indeed, regular fly anglers John Lawton and John Brennand stole the show in the middle part of the week, as the ‘two Johns’ recorded a total of 21 fish between them with seven returned to the reservoir. The dynamic duo had their success with a trusty Cat’s Whisker pattern, a favourite at Fontburn, this and Hawthorne which has come into its own in recent weeks. The weekend belonged to bait angler John Robinson, who secured the week’s best brace weighing in at 4lb 8oz and 4lb 2oz respectively. John persisted with his PowerBait tipped ledger rig in the north shore bay and was delighted with his two Fontburn reared specimen rainbows. Overall the week saw rod averages holding at over four fish per angler, a clear indication of the superb sport on offer, in spite of the at times disappointing and unseasonably cold weather.

Fishery Headline: Summerbell shines in heat-wave

Northumberland National Park has been bathed in glorious spring sunshine this week but despite the mini heat-wave the sport remained consistent. Actively feeding fish took advantage of terrestrial and aquatic hatches and the surface was alive with fish after three separate stockings of fresh, quality Fontburn reared rainbows and blues. Water levels have dropped steadily allowing easier back-casting for fly anglers like John Summerbell who despite fishing under bright sunshine tempted the ‘Fish Of The Week’, a 4lb rainbow with a Cat’s Whisker pattern, caught from the Dam Wall. Les Little was another angler who fished the conditions, moving from shallower swims to the depths of the Dam Wall as the mid day temperature soared and recorded a limit catch of eight rainbows totalling 15lb 12oz with a 3lb 8oz best fish. Heaviest catch honours were shared this week as both Mr. J Dickson and Mr. C Robson took limit catches of rainbows weighing in at 18lb whilst Jim Trefry, slightly apprehensive at having a permit number ending 666, had the luck of the devil - finding success on float fished PowerBait to take three rainbows each over 3lb in weight from the north shore bay.

Although it was mixed weather wise the fishing provided plenty of highlights with some superb catches taken by junior anglers. 8 year old Shay Watson topped Saturday’s reports when he weighed in 8 excellent rainbows alongside his proud dad for 18lb, brilliant stuff Shay! The week for other juniors started briskly too, on Monday William Renwick fishing with dad Martin weighed in 8 fish by 1pm, for a total weight of 15lb. This included the day’s top fish, a fully finned 3lb rainbow trout. As the week progressed the fishery saw some fine weather and regular fly angler and lure pattern enthusiast Sid Barnes was ready to strike. Sid enjoyed a top session on Thursday which saw him weigh in a ‘fintastic’ four, including this heaviest this week at 3lb 8oz. Regular bait angler Dave Madderson was also in top form when landed another mid-week 8 fish limit. Dave opted for his trusty ledger and PowerBait rig. Finally; David Muir claimed the latest tagged fish and £200 cash prize. David was fishing with his lucky mascot, son Lewis, and their 2lb winner was taken on a short cast with Ledgered Orange & Yellow Mice Tails.

Fishery Headline: Schooling the Trout

Conditions through the majority of the week were near perfect with mild air and overcast skies seeing fish on the move and feeding freely throughout those long June days we all relish. The weekend saw some blistering heat, but this was matched by the sport which continued apace. Yet again the talk on the banks was of quality, especially the average size of our stocked fish with barely a trout under the 2lb mark rearing its head. The undisputed highlight of the week was a visit on Wednesday from Northumberland Church of England Academy in Ashington: The Josephine Butler Primary Campus. Boy did we see some top sport with the children eventually weighing in 10 fish between them with some crackers above the 3lb mark. All the children were new to angling and were set up with a simple traditional bubble float rig and the south shore bay came alive for them. Top stuff and here’s to more of these events moving forward! The juniors continued to steal the show throughout the weekend too: First up eight year old Summer Welford from Dinnington who caught a stunning 3lb rainbow trout on her first ever fishing trip. Fishing with dad Steven, they left with four other trout and big, big smiles! Summer was not alone; Ethan Bottomley from Rothbury was also over the moon with his awesome 2lb 8oz rainbow trout caught off the south shore car park on Saturday. Fishing with dad Craig, the pair eventually weighed in three superb fish. Our established anglers also had some serious joy with Sid Barnes again drawing the plaudits on the fly with his lure patterns claiming 12 fish during another glorious session on Thursday. Bait angler Raymond Whaley from Middlesbrough had a tremendous couple of days recording a staggering 30 fish across four permits on both Thursday and Friday. Raymond utterly stole the show with his combined catch, pushing the scales to an unsurpassed total weight in excess of 61lb - simply undeniable!

Fishery Headline: Fishing the Conditions

A challenging week as fish moved into deeper, cooler water and fed sporadically throughout some testing days. As ever it was those anglers who were prepared to keep on the move and fish the conditions that had the most joy. Indeed, it was a week where fishing the margins proved a folly, it was therefore unsurprising that the long casting bait anglers reported the standout catches. Fishing into the prevailing wind also proved vital to success. Mr. M Brown recorded the trout of the week, another 3lb 8oz Fontburn reared beauty, part of a trio of fine fish weighed in during a short session on Friday. The weekend saw the two standout overall catches; Mr. P James worked hard on Saturday from the Dam Wall in blustery conditions, to eventually weigh in his eight fish limit for a superb total weight of 15lb 4oz. Sunday provided a real highlight when Mr. C Morton, fishing with his nephew and fellow anger Mr. K Marshall, recorded 15 fish between them for an unsurpassed total weight of over 30lb. The trio chose to fish the south shore bay directly into some strong and cool winds with long casts and ledger rigs which proved too tempting for a shoal of bottom feeding fish.

Fishery Headline: That’s ‘Muir’ like It!

Another week where the weather provided the biggest challenge, long wet days and blustery conditions tested both angler’s patience and perseverance. It’s often during these testing times that Fontburn finds a way to shine and through the week that was certainly the case. Monday got off to a flyer when young Morgan Lumsdon aged eight from Cramlington stole the show. Morgan was fishing with her Grandparents: Leanne and David and she recorded her first ever trio with the family eventually weighing in eight fish between them. Morgan opted for a rustic bubble float and worm setup, targeting the reed beds close in around the south shore and as ever, fishing the conditions proved successful. The weekend also provided some ‘reel’ highlights, in particular Sunday. Regular bait angler David Muir fishing with his brother Robert, had a spectacular day as they ledgered their way to a monumental 22 fish during their mesmeric north shore bay session. The Muir brothers opted to short cast into the prevailing westerly wind and found the fish to be only feet from the bank side, bottom feeding in large numbers. Sunday was also the day the fish of the week headed to the scales. Bait angler Paul Maddison was utterly delighted with his 5lb 2oz beauty, as a ledger rig and PowerBait hook bait once again proved decisive.
