Fishery Headline: Ray ‘Bates’ them in

Another week of mixed weather and fortunes belonged to those who were prepared to work hard, those who kept on the move and those savvy anglers who heeded and fished the conditions. The bank-side talk centred on the quality of the Fontburn ‘stockies’ with numerous fish weighed in at the 3lb and above mark. The headline stealer was none other than regular Fontburn bait angler Raymond Batey from Morpeth. Ray opted for a feeder and PowerBait assault on a shoal of bottom feeding margin huggers, and boy did he reap the rewards! He was quite rightly delighted with his hard earned eight fish limit catch, inclusive of three beauties which weighed in at a quality affirming 3lb 12oz, 3lb 10oz and 3lb 9oz. That ensured Ray recorded the weeks standout overall catch and with it the top three single fish. Ray was not alone, with fellow bait angler George Todd from Newcastle weighing in his own 3lb 2oz beauty along with Mr. D Ranson who pushed Ray close with his top trout, a stunning 3lb 8oz rainbow trout. It was great to see so many juniors on site over the weekend, especially as so many recorded their first ever catches. Four year old Leo Candlith was one such delighted youngster who recorded his debut trout alongside his Grandad and what a memorable one it was too – a 3lb cracker! Not a bad way to begin his very own fishing odyssey.

Fishery Headline: Backley on fire in heat-wave!

After beginning the week in heat-wave conditions the weather soon deteriorated into a wet and wild start to the school holidays with water levels a couple of feet shy of top water. Water temperatures remain high and this is having noticeable impact within the shallow bays as fish seek out deeper, cooler layers returning to feed in the margins early morning and late afternoon. Former Fire-fighter Dave Backley heeded the Ranger’s advice and headed to the top bay of the north shore and was well rewarded with five fish totalling 19lb 12oz including two fish over 5lb and the heaviest fish of the season (so far) at 6lb 8oz taken on ledgered PowerBait. It was definitely a week of specimen catches with Shaun Gibson signing out a 5lb 4oz rainbow from the north shore but it was Paul James and family who had the most outstanding day with 12 rainbows totalling 39lb with a best fish of 4lb 12oz caught by Lucy on float fished worm, again from the north shore.

Fishery Headline: MacKay takes 8lb brace

Sunshine and showers prevailed for the majority of the week and consequently water temperatures and levels have remained steady with the fish continuing to lie up in deeper areas during the middle of the day. Feeder streams flushing naturals into the reservoir were also good spots following heavy showers and spinning tactics are also becoming increasingly productive as fry and minnow numbers build up as summer sets in. Friday saw our annual Northumberland County Blind Association charity match (results below) which was well attended by 51 adult and 9 junior anglers. The deep water of the Dam Wall produced the most consistent catches with the winners of both junior and senior events fishing this area. Fish of the week was a brace of 4lb rainbows caught by Mr. R MacKay taken on PowerBait in the north shore bay with the best limit catch being eight rainbows totalling 17lb 3oz caught by Mr. L Scott.

NCBA results: Adults 1st J. Derbyshire 9lb 14oz
2nd S. Langley 6lb 12oz
Heaviest Fish C. Turnbull 3lb 5oz

Juniors 1st L. McMutrie 9lb 4oz
2nd A. Robson 5lb 14oz
Heaviest Fish K. Halliwell 2lb 12oz

Fishery Headline: Rising star Kacy Triumphs in tough conditions

Sunshine and showers were again the predominant conditions keeping water temperatures high and levels close to the top-water mark. Evening hatches were prolific this week providing awesome sport for any anglers staying back after 6pm, when the reservoir truly comes to life at this time of year as fish feed aggressively on the surface or begin preying on fry and minnows in the margins. Regulars Gerry and Irene McKever were enjoying the impressive spectacle from the north shore burn, with five rainbows totalling 9lb 12oz already brought to the net, when the breeze dropped and an onslaught of midgies ended play on Sunday. William Anderson fishing opposite on the south shore bay topped off a six fish catch with the Fish Of The Week – a 4lb rainbow taken on ledgered green PowerBait. Eleven year old Kacy Halliwell earns a special mention for her catch of five rainbows totalling 9lb 4oz caught near the north shore point during warm sunny conditions while many, far more experienced anglers, struggled to locate the fish. Kacy got her tactics spot on and was rewarded with a 3lb 2oz beauty to top off her catch. Other notable catches this week were recorded by Mr. E Metcalfe and Mr. L Ellis with six rainbows totalling 9lb and seven rainbows for 9lb 8oz respectively.
