I would go for freshwater until you learn to cast properly. Try to join a club that has some lakes with small carp up to 4 or 5lb and learn your skills on them.

+1 for freshwater to start. UK saltwater fly fishing is less accessible because of wind (sea state) and tides.
Catch some stocked trout or carp to start with, see if it's for you.

Hmm. Depends where you live. If the beach is nearer, and it’s summer, mackerel can be an obliging starter fish. But if you haven’t got deep calm seawater easily accessible, yeah freshwater. Worth getting a casting lesson or several to cut down on the ‘what was I thinking when I decided to take this up a root canal is more fun’ moments
