I will post here about river Lištica in west Hercegovina. River Lištica is small but very cold river. It flows through town of Široki Brijeg. Most of the springs are in Borak, in deep and beautiful canyon only about 2 km from town center. It sinks into krast abyss some 20km downstream, flows few kilometers via underground and emerges to surface as river Jaseinca, which flows into river Neretva (Adriatic basin) after a few kilometers. The water is cold and clear throughout a year. Water can be pretty low in summer and very high and torrential in winter or early spring. Trout is most abundant fish. Trout from river Lištica is unique salmonidae, what can bee observed by visual comparing with other species. Genetic analysis is still in progress and first results are very unusual and interesting. Fish grow fast in Lištica river because food is abundant. Even under small rocks and gravel there are numerous shrimps, larva, and other insects. Most abundant insects are mayflys. Sometimes hatch can be epic, as shown in video below. Layer of dead insects on the road couple of years ago was so thick it caused several car crashes. Unlike on many other rivers, the most successful bate here is dry fly.

Wow, great description and pictures. The Listica looks Super Dobro. Is it possible for a tourist to get the necessary papers to fish there?

Thanks!
Absolutely, and it is pretty affordable. A year paper costs less than a day paper on some European waters. For accommodation there are many good hotels and motels and prices are very reasonable. If you can take care for transport, it is a way to go

These are most common flys on river Lištica
This one we call "muvar" It is fairly large mayfly and hatches in huge numbers.
