How not to catch Pike

Lunchtime the other day, the sun was out as I glanced out of the kitchen window.

The wind had dropped and I wondered if there might be a small midday hatch on?

I grabbed a sandwich and my 7 foot, 3# and jumped in the car.

Down at the river things looked a bit different......

In my hurry I hadn't packed a single wet fly.

I thrashed the water with a couple of dry patterns, but had no confidence in them.

In the end I concocted (I won't say tied) this fly?, lure?, dropshot?....

(Originally the rubber was more on the hook)

and after a few casts under a likely looking tree, hooked in to this fellow

Bearing in mind my leader was only 2.5lb, this was one of the most nerve wracking fights I had ever had with a fish.

Fortunately I had hooked him right in the corner of the mouth, so the line didn't touch his teeth, but I never once believed I would actually land him until he was well in the net.

Definitely one for the 'how not to' pile.
