Fishery Headline: James and the giant fish!

A great week of weather has brought out a brilliant attendance and some excellent sport to match with one of the best weekly rod averages of the season. James McGinny had some great sport whilst fishing with a small red Mepps spinner from a boat in Stockie Bay. After he took his limit by lunch he bought a second permit from Tower Knowe. Whilst fishing on his second permit he caught this week’s largest fish weighing in at 5lb 13oz which is also the largest fish of the season so far. There have been a good number of fish showing on the surface this week as well. Floating lines and traditional patterns have taken some great fish from Leaplish and Hawkhirst bays.

Please note: To book places on the next heat Sunday 28 May please call Leaplish on 01434 251 000. Please note that boats are currently due back at the jetty at 8pm.

Fishery Headline: Fly life bursts on to the water!

With a spell of long overdue rain the sport dramatically improved and fly life has exploded on to the water. Black buzzers, a few hawthorns and the odd sedge have been seen with fish feeding on them in Whickhope and the tip of Plashetts Bay. A team of colleagues from the Scottish Prison Service had a three day mid-week break on site. Their friendly competition between the five anglers saw them catch over eighty fish between them! Most were taken on orange PowerBait eggs from various locations on the reservoir. With fine weather forecast for the next few days there can be no finer place to explore with a rod, line and a boat!

Please note: To book places on the next heat Sunday 28 May please call Leaplish on 01434 251 000. Please note that boats are currently due back at the jetty at 8pm.

Fishery Headline: Kane and Scott are just too hot!

It’s been another great week with the rod average hitting highs of the season at almost four fish per angler. Bait anglers netted fish consistently using ledgered PowerBait in deeper areas. For fly anglers the best tactic was to keep on the move in order to find rising fish with mixed methods taking fish including dry Hawthorn flies or traditional black wet flies fished just under the surface. Mr. C Graham caught his limit weighing 19lb on worm at Hawkhope and took the plaudits for ‘catch of the week’.

Second round of Kielder pairs competition results as follows:
1st Sean Kane and Kai Scott - 12 fish,
2nd Peter Crowe and Ernie Craster – seven fish
3rd Andrew Scott and Simon Robinson - eight fish
4th Alan Jenkins and ted Fenwick - six fish
5th Robert Marshall and Ethan Marshall - three fish

The top five anglers all progress to the grand final 9 July 2017.

Fishery Headline: Bumper stocking of large fish

Kielder Water is in fine form with anglers enjoying some great sport from both boat and bank. This week there were 18 recorded catch limits with 11 trout over three pound in weight. Peter Pattinson and Ray Fothergill caught 20 fish from their boat on Friday 2 June. Peter landed several quality rainbows including a fish of 3lb 8oz and the best of the season so far at 6lb. Keith Wilson caught and returned four rainbows over 3 in weight from one of the boats at the top of the Whickhope Inlet. There have been a number of larger fish stocked over the last week up to 18lb. These fish have been stocked at different locations so anglers have a chance of landing a specimen rainbow anywhere from the shore or boat. Bank anglers have had the best catches this week from the north shore at Hawkhope car park past Gordon’s Walls up towards the mouth of the Belling Inlet.

Fishery Headline: King Kevin!

This last week has seen some of the lesser fished parts of the reservoir produce some great results. Gowanburn, Mathew’s Linn and Hawkhirst Point have all seen anglers take limit catches as the fish continue to spread our following bumper early season stockings. This weeks largest fish was taken from Gowanburn by Kevin McMarren whilst boat fishing using a long tailed Muddler and weighed in at 6lb 1oz. He also managed to take another six fish on a similar method for a total catch weight of 17lb 6oz. Mr Sutton from Rothbury also had some great sport whilst fishing from the boat at Mirarge at the north western tip of the reservoir. He too took fish on the surface with smaller traditional patterns and then had more luck slightly deeper with black lures. Bank anglers have continued to find success at Tower Knowe and Stockie Bay. High winds have proved challenging to those in the east corner of Stockie Bay but their perseverance has paid off with plenty of fish coming from this spot over the week to ledgered PowerBait and worm.

The final for the WaterAid competition is taking place Sunday 9 July

Fishery Headline: Magic Michael!

High winds persisted throughout the week, however anglers have been able to find sheltered spots especially around the Sailing Club and the visitor centre at Tower Knowe. Keith Watson landed two 3lb rainbows on ledgered worm at Tower Knowe Sailing Club. The heaviest recorded fish of the week was a rainbow of 5lb 7oz caught at the mouth of the Lewis Burn just north of Matthew’s Linn on the south shore by Paul Lamb on a red and black Mepps spinner. Matthew’s Linn has been one of the best areas for bank anglers this week with limit catches being recorded all along the Lakeside Way down towards the Scout Camp at Hawkhirst. Kielder regular
Michael Sinkinson had our catch of the week with a total limit weight of 16lb 8oz for eight rainbows - all on worm.

Fishery Headline: Lee and Connor with WaterAid Honour!

Cooler and more overcast conditions than previous weeks greeted the Wateraid finalists for the much awaited climax to this coveted competition. The boats departed the jetty evenly split with half heading towards Plashetts and Matthew’s Linn. Trout were taken mostly in the surface layers with some good follows and snappy takes reported. The wind increased thought the day but conditions remained favourable. 22 anglers took 91 fish through the day with the rod average of 4.2 per angler. Conner Metcalf and Lee Wilkinson came First with 16 fish weighing in at 23lb 2oz. The winning team managed to catch their limit by 3pm which is a great effort given the blustery conditions. Second were Alan Jenkins and Ted Fenwick with 15 fish weighing in at 22lb 8oz. Third were Andy Jones and Dave Mordue with 12 fish weighing in at 18lb 6oz. Earlier in the week Davy Madderson caught eight fish weighing in at 17lb at Hawkhope on PowerBait and Andrew Coulson caught eight fish on sweet corn and worm to top off a good week all round!

Fishery Headline: Prize fund rises

As the elusive tagged fish has still not been caught after four months, we have stocked a second tagged fish. The prize money at the time of writing is £387. Don’t forget you must record your entry to the sweep stake before fishing to be eligible to collect the prize money. Fish have now spread throughout the reservoir with pretty much all bays and inlets producing catches. Anglers are finding that if they want to catch their limits they need to try several locations throughout the day. It’s very easy to always fish your favourite spot, but trying a new location can reap rewards! Brian Remish of Morpeth managed to catch a few fish from three locations to make up his catch limit. A mixture of ledgered floating PowerBait and a bubble float baited with worm/sweet corn mix were his best methods. Boat anglers have had some good sport in Plashetts, Matthew’s Linn and the Belling. Either a fly presented in the sub-surface layers or on a Di2 have taken the majority of fish.

Fishery Headline: King Colin!

The weather continued unsettled, however, there have been good catches for fly anglers when the sun has finally broken through. Multi Bait anglers had the best of the sport this week during the cooler periods. Boat angler Colin Famelton from Cramlington recorded the best catch of the week with 22lb 3oz from Needs Hill on the north shore caught on worm and sweet corn. Paul Telford landed the heaviest fish of the week a rainbow of 5lb 4oz from the Sailing Club at Tower Knowe Visitor Centre caught on a Claret Hopper on a floating line. Gerry Welton had an unusual catch of a 2lb eel from the mouth of Whickhope Burn, he even managed to release the eel as it was only caught by the top lip. David Horton, a visiting angler from Scotland, caught and released two fully finned brown trout from the point off Merlin Brea; the heavier one at 1lb 5oz.
