Six Eyes

Having some bright sunny days here in NZ, and time to stalk the sandy shallows for the predators such as the kahawai ( aka Australian salmon) or kingfish.
This guy took a green and white closer in a tidal race over a sand bar.
Liked the ripple distortion over the eyes of the fish and the fly's ...

Foiled again. :)

Page 3 on your flickr page :D

Ah - I forgot I put it on there as well. :p

We were going to start a "guess the stillwater" thread... post a photo of a stillwater... first to get it right gets to post the next one, sort of thing. Possible winter-filler thread?

Some fishing from the weekend at Russell

Had an a trip to visit a friend to do some saltwater fly up in the Bay of Islands (New Zealand). First did some land based shallow water and tickled a few small snapper ...

Quite a pretty sight in the evening light

But next morning at dawn we headed out into the bay on his boat, hunting for kingfish who love hanging around any structure in the water ... and respond to poppers or large streamer patterns - a challenge to cast! Even with a 12 wt outfit.

But patient persistent is rewarded ... with a 65cm "rat" kingfish.

But alas too small and it is returned to grow some more.
Such is fishing!

Yes Wolfie I have moved back to the UK, Living in Gosport on the edge of Portsmouth Harbour and looking forward to chasing some Bass this coming Spring, but I do miss those Kingfish Flats in Auckland!
All the best.

Hope to see some evidence of you using the long rod on some Euro Bass when you get out among them!
I've been missing the kings as well! Fishing wise this summer has been a fizzer - continual westerlies mean near drought conditions in northern North island, and worse, cold water in the harbour, about 2-3 degrees below expected. Good old El Nino. Only saw my first flats kings a few weeks ago instead of in December.
Hopefully some easterlies will push in the warm water before winter ...:(

Here is Peter Lyons, short-lining on Loch Lomond. Peter doesn't have full use of his left arm, and he uses an old Bill McEwan 15ft Greys Kielder Long Lomond AFTM 4/5/6 made in the '80's. Peter employs a roll cast, where the flies are never in the air behind the boat. Gets the bob fly up while still miles away and keeps it going right up to the gunnel. Peter has landed salmon to 14 lb on it. A joy to watch him using it.
