Ravensthorpe Reservoir w/e/ 3/7/16

Fish week 165(Season 8,886) Returns 46(1,105) Rod average 3.5 (8.0)
Ravensthorpe continues to fish well from both bank and boat. Fraser Duffy Jnr had some great sport fishing from a boat. Fraser opted for small dries on a floating line, drifting across the main bowl. He landed 15 hard fighting Rainbow trout. Liam Holdshaw also had a great day from a boat. Liam fished damsels on the washing line method with a very slow to no retrieve and the trout were very keen.

Several anglers have done well from the bank, particularly platforms 4,5, and 6. Most popular methods are damsels on a floating line or a big bushy dry. The dam is responding better to buzzers and diawl bachs – again on floating lines.

Best boat areas Main bowl.

Best bank areas Platforms 4,5,6 and Dam.

Best methods See report.

Mid week boat winner Alan Duffin.

Ravensthorpe Reservoir
Fish week 134 (Season 9,020) Returns 35 (1,140) Rod average3.8 (7.9)
Anglers have experienced mixed fortunes at Ravensthorpe with the wind making fishing difficult mid week.

The fish are high up in the water, so floating lines with small dries such as hoppers, klinkhammers and c.d.c’s have been working well. The washing line with small diawl bachs, crunchers, buzzers or damsel nymphs are working as well.

Mick Griffin had a brilliant morning fishing on Sunday. Mick fished small dries from an anchored boat, catching and returning 14 fish, several of which were around 4lb.

Jamie Blaney also had a good morning on Sunday, catching 12 fish on c.d.c. buzzers on a floating line. The bank is also producing fish to the same methods.

Best Rainbow 4lb plus.

Best boat areas Main Bowl.

Best bank areas Dam, Platforms 4,5 and 6.

Ravensthorpe Reservoir
Fish week 143(Season 9,440) Returns 46 (1,235) Rod average 3.1(7.6)
It’s been a mixed week at Ravensthorpe with the hot weather putting the fish down in deeper water. But in cloud cover and breezy conditions the fish have been up in the water and taking dries.

Boat anglers anchored along the weed beds or drifting across the Main Bowl, using floating line with dries are taking plenty of fish. Crunchers and diawl bachs have also been working when the fish haven’t been taking dries.

The Dam and Platforms 4 and 5 are producing the odd fish with floating line with dries or small nymphs and damsel being the best methods.

Best Rainbow 4lb taken by James Brown of Long Buckby.

Best boat areas Main Bowl, along weed beds.

Best bank areas Dam, Platforms 4 and 5.

Ravensthorpe Reservoir
Fish week 314 (Season 9,890) Returns 112 (1,386) Rod average 2.6(7.1)
Last week saw the conclusion of the popular Ravensthorpe Summer Boat Club. Frazer Duffy Senior took first place with Roger Kerrison in second and John Smith in third place.

The Griff Challenge was fished on Sunday 14 August. 32 Anglers caught 66 fish for a rod average of 2.06. Pete Webb won with four fish for 9lb 4oz. Dennis Footman took the prize for the biggest fish at 3lb 14oz.

Ravensthorpe is proving to be quite challenging at present. Fishing dries seems to be the only way to catch.

Best boat areas Drifting anywhere.

Re: Ravensthorpe 9/10/16

Ravensthorpe Reservoir

The cooler weather conditions and a recent stocking of fish should improve the rod average at Ravensthorpe. Anglers are finding most of the trout are near the Boils/Island and out in the middle, catching on mainly hoppers and daddies.

This week we hosted a Fur & Feather match, this was won by M Brown ad P Hodgson with a combined weight of 18lb 3oz. F Duff and M Clarke took second place with a bag weight of 16lb. G Bedford and G Jones were third with 10lb 9oz.

Pike fishing has steadied due to the weather with mainly small Jacks being caught; all down the Coton End using 7 inch Jelly lures.

Best Rainbow 7½lb taken by Stuart Payne.

Re: Ravensthorpe w/e 12 March 2017

Fish 801 (1,739 season) Returns 88 (166)Rod average 9.1(10.5)
Anglers have enjoyed another great week’s fishing at Ravensthorpe with fish switching on to the buzzer.

Favoured tactics were either lures on Pitsford Pea, blobs, dancers and Marabou damsels or black buzzers fished static. Both banks are fishing well with fish being caught off Mongers Bank as well as by the island. Bank anglers are also enjoying success from the Dam.

Mike Osgood caught some lovely fish on Tuesday fishing with his switch rod by the lodge. Mike tempted fish of 8lb 4oz and 5lb 12oz amongst others on a Pitsford Pea. David Brady and his boat partner also had a good day bringing around 50 fish to the boat. The best catch of the week went to the boat of Mr Arnold and his son – they caught 84 fish over by the island.

Re: Ravensthorpe 26 March

Ravensthorpe Reservoir
Fish 411 (season 2,684) Returns 67 (297)Rod average 6.1(9.0)
It’s been another productive week at Ravensthorpe, with a rod average of 6.1.

The colder winds have steadied the buzzer hatches, but fish continue to be caught on buzzers fished deeper. Heavy quill or black buzzers are working well. The best boat areas have been Coton End and most marginal areas of the reservoir (40-50 metres off shore).

Bank anglers are finding that the dam seems to work well as the fish are just out of range from the platforms, especially if the weather is bright. Buzzers, red diawl bachs and floating line are working well.

The best fish recorded this week were two nice Rainbows of 5lb caught by Mick Griffin. On Sunday 19 March Fraser Duffy junior caught and released a 10lb Rainbow.

Best Rainbow Two at 5lb.

Best boat areas Coton End, margins, Catwalk Corner.

Best bank areas Dam.

Re: Ravensthorpe - 2nd April 2017

Ravensthorpe Reservoir
Anglers have enjoyed another superb week of sport at Ravensthorpe with a rod average of 10.5. Many anglers have achieved dream numbers of fish to the net. Kevin Daykin landed a fine Rainbow of 9lb 8oz from Platform 5 on the buzzer.

Boat anglers are catching a large number of fish. Charlie Watts and his boat partner caught 50 fish between them, all on the buzzer, including a 12lb Rainbow that was safely returned to the water. A buzzer accounted for a fine 9lb 8oz Rainbow caught by seasoned angler Trev Hall. Simon Hunt and Chris Skillen took 40 fish between them, returning Rainbows of 12lb and 10lb caught on green diawl bachs.

Ravensthorpe Reservoir
Fish 973 (season 4257) Returns 99 (453)Rod average 9.8 (9.3)
Ravensthorpe continues to be in top form. Graham Smith and Mick Griffin had 52 fish to their boat - quill buzzers with a fab on the point proved very effective.

Mick O’Farrell estimated he caught up to 80 fish again on floating line with buzzers. Andy Lane caught 24 fish with floating line with buzzers and diawl bachs, but also managed a few on dries.

The bank is also producing some good fish with Platforms 11 and 12 to the Causeway being the best area. Alan Duffin had a good fish of 5lb 4oz on buzzers.

Mid Northants Trout Fishers fished The Presidents Cup Floating Line Competition on Sunday. 29 anglers fished, netting 291 fish for a rod average of 10.

Anglers have enjoyed another good week at Ravensthorpe. The Coton End and along the Causeway have been the best areas from the boat. Floating line with buzzers and diawl bachs and a blob or f.a.b. on the point the best method. A few fish are also being caught on dries.

Fraser Duffy had over 20 fish to his boat on Tuesday, using buzzers and switching to lures when the buzzers went quiet. Mr Morhen and Mr Sawyer also had 20 fish to their boat on buzzers from the Coton End.

Bank anglers have been catching fish from the bottom end, on platforms 11 and 12 or wading from the bank, again buzzers and small nymphs are catching fish.

Fish 475 (season 5,144) Returns 60 (586)Rod average 7.7 (8.8)
Ravensthorpe continues to fish well with another week of superb fishing. Buzzer fishing continues to be the top method. Anglers fishing static or a really slow retrieve, are finding black or olive buzzer is the best colour.

Mr Heseltine and his boat partner had 29 fish to the boat on Thursday using black buzzer and floating line.

Charlie Watts had 30 fish to the boat, again on black buzzer.

The bank is producing some nice fish with buzzers and nymphs working well. Mike Osgood had a nice Rainbow of around 4lb from Platform 14.

Re: Ravensthorpe 7/5/17

Ravensthorpe Reservoir
Fish 904 (season 6,603 ) Returns 108 (778)Rod average 8.3 (8.4)
Ravensthorpe is in outstanding form with a rod average of 8.3 for the week and eight fish of over 6lb.

The fish are hard on the buzzer and up in the water with most being hooked on washing line tactics fished very slowly. FAB on the point with size 12 black, grey or red lightweight buzzers has proved to be a deadly combination. Diawl bachs and crunchers have also been very effective. There are still a few pond olives coming off the water and fish feeding on them can be tempted by wet fly imitations.

Dry flies have seen some success this week when the fish are showing consistently and the best patterns are bobs Bits, crippled midge and klinkhammer. The stamp of fish being caught is generally very good with 15 Rainbows killed and taken between three to four pounds and some lovely silver fish between four and six pounds.

Alan Duffin had a 7lb 6oz Rainbow on a size 10 black buzzer from Platform 12 and Mr B Osborn took a fish of 8lb 8oz this week, but the biggest Rainbow this week weighed 8lb 13oz and came to Mick Griffin whilst fishing in his floating line match.

Competition news
Mick Griffin Floating Line match
This was held on Sunday in good conditions with some great results. Most anglers caught their bag and then fished catch and release. Mick Griffin won comfortably with four fish for 19lb 10oz, including best fish of the week at 8lb 13oz. Mick also took a lovely silver fish of 5lb plus as part of his bag. Second place went to Anglian Water Ranger Simon Farmer with four fish for 16lb 1oz including a Rainbow of 7lb 2oz. Third place went to Frazer Duffy Jnr who caught four fish for 15lb 10oz including a fish of 8lb 6oz.

The bank has fished very well this week from both the Coton car park and the opposite corner of the Causeway. Fish are coming again mainly to buzzers fished on the washing line.

Best Rainbow 8lb 13oz taken by Mick Griffin.

Best boat areas Coton car park to the Island and Causeway Corner to Tall Willows.

Fishing is proving to be slightly harder at Ravensthorpe this week. Huge amounts of fish are showing topside, though being quite fickle with takes. The best method is washing line or straight lining. The best areas of the reservoir are Coton End for both boat and bank anglers. Fish are in the top four feet.

Amongst the best fish this week were four cracking Rainbows. The biggest fish of the week was an 11lb Rainbow caught by Peter Davidson. James Hope landed a fish of approximately 10lb, Mark Bradbury took a fish of 9lb 12oz and Peter Tanner landed a fine fish of 9lb.

Fish 240 (season 7,319) Returns 65 (931) Rod average 3.6(7.8)
It’s been a testing week at Ravensthorpe for most anglers with some having catches into double figures, with others taking two or three. Fish are showing everywhere much to the frustration of many.

Bank angler Aland Duffins fished Ravensthorpe three times this week and his best fish - a 7lb 6oz Rainbow, caught off the Dam, was the best fish of the week, equalled by another 7lb 6oz Rainbow taken by D Nash.

Craig Nimmo and his boat partner Mike Doyle had 30 fish to the boat in an afternoon fishing buzzers and diawl bachs. The pair returned two days later in more challenging conditions to take four fish apiece.

Ravensthorpe’s Thursday Night Boat Club is now under way. Starting at 6pm, fishing to 9pm – everyone is welcome.

Both boat and bank anglers are enjoying good sport at Ravensthorpe. The best fish of the week was a 7lb 8oz Rainbow taken by B McIntosh. Roger McCann took a lovely 6lb Rainbow whilst twitching a couple of damsel patterns through the Boils. Roger had a double hook up and landed the 6lb specimen and got broken off by the other fish which was bigger.

Masses of fish are showing everywhere to the boats, although it is not easy to work out what the fish are actually taking. Good results are coming to bloodworm patterns, non weighted are working well when fished in the top three feet of water. Buzzers, diawl bachs, flashback ptn’s on droppers on a floating line. The best boat areas are the top end and north bank down to the island.

A tricky week at Ravensthorpe this week. The trout seem to be pre-occupied with the large numbers of damsel nymphs coming in to hatch. Floating or slow intermediate lines with damsels are catching a few fish but the top method above all others is the washing line, tequila fab on the point with black quill buzzers on the droppers.

Mr Foster and his boat partner fishing the washing line and had 16 fish to the boat. The Spencer brothers also did well on the washing line taking 14 fish to their boat. Alan Duffin opted to fish the bank again with the washing line method and landed seven fish.

The best fish of the week at Ravensthorpe was a 5lb Rainbow taken by Alan Duffin. Alan was fishing a washing line with a f.a.b. on the point and small buzzers from Platform 12 last Tuesday morning. Alan had an excellent morning’s sport taking six fish and coming back for more on Thursday, taking five fish.

It has been a week of mixed sport. The fish have sometimes been tricky to catch on a variety of methods. Floating line with diawl bachs, crunchers and small nymphs have been working; small dries like bob’s bits, hoppers, cdc’s and washing line with black or olive buzzers are also worth trying.

Anglers have enjoyed a week of really good sport at Ravensthorpe, with both boat and bank anglers landing fish. Various methods have been working including floating line with buzzers on washing line, diawl bachs or crunchers. Small dries have also been catching plenty of fish.

Mr Wood and Mr Kay fished for 3 days on a 3 day boat holiday package and had some fantastic sport catching 76 fish in the 3 days. Andy Kress had the biggest fish of the week – a Rainbow of 5lb 4oz. Andy finished the day having 25 fish to the boat – all on dries.

David Goldie had 6 fish from the bank on quill buzzers; David was wading from the bank down the Coton end.

Ravensthorpe has been fishing well considering the hot weather conditions experienced for most of last week. Small dry flies have been catching well due to the fish feeding on olives and damsels. Bobs Bits, crippled midge, damsel patterns, buzzers and diawl bachs have mostly been the flies of choice.

Boat anglers have had the best sport at the Coton End and the island. Best bank spots have been from Platforms 11 and 12 and by the Coton Car Park.
