I've not used/tried this but it's a no-brainer if you tie small flies. The space created by the steepness of the jaws is just so useful. I have much the same idea stuck into a huge slab of wood. It's the only problem... Needs a more stable platform/heavier base. Simples to sort out. Mike has a eye for good stuff regardless of price or reputation.

This is pretty much the final argument on budget vices. The steep angle of the jaws does it for me.... You get the room you need if tying smallies. Some exalted vices don't provide that and I've always been bemused by that. I don't tie more than I need to and use the hugely strong jaws of an Indian, ground down a bit and its shaft buried in a rather heavy bit of hardwood. Cost? Nothing. Thanks to the tail end of hardwood kitchen counter and a freebee from Colonel Punt. It was more effort but I think my solution is the beast:D

Your always adjusting to accommodate the different wires? The Indian, or it's more expensive models just use a spring so strong it grabs anything.you give it. The more flowery examples of holding a hook at some considerable expense are amusing me I have to say:D

A steep angle of the jaws always seemed to me an essential to give room at the back of the fly where you hold material for tying in. Many highly regarded vices are too shallow in this respect. Off the shelf this is a no brainer.
