Fishery Headline: Dam Wall best of all!

It’s been a mixed week with shoals of fish appearing in different areas on different days with the majority of action for bait anglers. Single baits on the hook on either ledger or float with longer traces had the best results. On Wednesday Jeff Walsh from Stockton had an exciting day fishing at the west end using a feeder rig with a single Orange PowerBait Egg on the hook landing a total of six fish, his second fish a beautiful 5lb blue and his forth fish was the best of the week; a 6lb 2oz rainbow. On Thursday Steve Lynas from Hinderwell was fishing the beginning of the west end of the Dam Wall and caught his eighth fish limit by 2.30pm, bought a second permit and caught another three to make a total of 11, all caught using worm. On Friday Craig Husband and David Allison both from Saltburn used their loyalty days to maximum effect and had a cracking day together from theIir first casts. Both of them landed their 10 fish limit fishing along the Dam Wall using their favourite bait of Rainbow PowerBait Paste.

Fishery Headline: Ian enjoys Scaling Walkabout!

The favourable weather has seen anglers changing tactics to suit the sunny, bright conditions. Both bait and fly anglers had best results with longer casts into deeper areas with natural baits such as worm working extremely well. With Scaling Dam’s reputation for excellent fishing and customer service reaching all corners of the globe, Ian Walker from Australia went on walkabout around the Dam. He found success at the west end on Pink PowerBait Eggs and worm managing to get his eight fish limit including a lovely 2lb brown trout. Ian will certainly have to get extra baggage for the trip home as his total weight was 17lb 6oz. George Houston from Guisborough took his limit on maggot from the jetty and Bruce Hodgson from Brotton was rewarded with six rainbows from his favoured spot at the west end of the Dam Wall including a nice 4lb rainbow taken on Spring Green PowerBait. Fly angler Andy Moscrop from Loftus hit the east end bay and groyne area finding success with Olive Buzzers and a Black Hopper taking his four fish limit and returning another two. The biggest fish of the week was caught by Richard Wishart from Middlesbrough who took a lovely 5lb blue from the jetty on Orange and White PowerBait Egg tipped with worm. Eljay Wells aged 15, also from Middlesbrough showed his grandad how it’s done catching a nice 4lb 12oz rainbow with his first catch of the morning using Green PowerBait and worm.

Fishery Headline: Double tagged success at Scaling

The summer heat has seen the trout move deep seeking cooler water and to avoid the bright sunlight. Long traces and casts have presented bait anglers the challenge of keeping in touch with bites and feeding fish. However the west and east end of the Dam Wall has seen most action with Graham Walker from Liverton Mines starting the week catching four trout at the east end on Green PowerBait and worm including a nice 3lb rainbow which had the added bonus of been tagged. Lee Bailey from Eaglescliffe fished the moorside with Blue/Mango PowerBait and also went home a £100 richer when he caught the second tagged fish of the week. Fly angler Mr. D Barrington purchased a credit cruncher and worked the south shore on a Silver Invicta and was rewarded with six rainbows, returning three.

NEWSFLASH - Another two tagged fish will be included in this weeks stocking.

Fishery Headline: Andy has ‘best day of season’

With trout rising at both ends of the reservoir and with the brown trout from previous stocking now starting to show, anglers have had some great sport this week. “Best day of the season,“ was what local fly angler Andy Moscrop wrote on his return this week. Andy managed nine trout and went home with four weighing in at 19lb. Andy worked the south shore and moorside with a winged Hare’s Ear and Silver Invicta and even losing a 8lb+ brown at the net. Also on the fly Malcolm Mitchell from Middlesbrough caught 14 returning nine on a Dawson’s Olive and Black Tadpole from the east end bay. Bait anglers enjoyed good action from both ends of the Dam Wall with Joe McCabe aged 50 from Eaglescliffe taking his first limit by 9.30am and getting his second including two browns by 2pm. Guisborough angler George Houston caught his limit on the jetty including a lovely 4lb rainbow which he tempted using Chartreuse PowerBait. Also on the jetty was Bruce Hodgson from Loftus who took his limit including a 5lb 2oz rainbow caught on Pink PowerBait Eggs.

Fishery Headline: Michael’s Magnificent Seven Browns

Occasionally both ends of the Dam have had some great results this week but for most part the south shoreline and the east bay have been the best areas, especially for the fly anglers who have had some excellent results. On Monday Dickie Warburton from Redcar fished the east end of the Dam Wall on ledgered worm and PowerBait and landed six beautiful rainbows weighing in at a total of 14lb. On Wednesday Derek Ogden from Redcar worked his way along the south shore following a shoal using a Brown Cormorant on a floating line and landed a total of 12 fish, returning four. On Thursday Michael Adams from Billingham sat patiently on the west end of the Dam Wall and using a combination of ledgered maggot and worm and caught an impressive seven brown trout which is a “first” for Scaling. On Sunday Clark Mondel from Middlesbrough worked his way along the south shore to the east bay and landed a total of 10 fish returning four, all on Kate McLaren. The biggest fish of the week was a respectable 4lb 8oz which was tempted by a Black Hopper on the south shore by Andy Moscrop from Loftus which was one of seven trout he landed, returning three. All of Andy’s fish were caught on dry flies.

NEWSFLASH – Starting Monday 21 July Scaling are running a daily competition with a prize of a Credit Cruncher £16 permit given each day. The winner will be the angler with the biggest fish weighed in each day at 4pm and is open to all anglers.

Fishery Headline: Sport improves as water cools!

It was a slow start to the week for bait anglers but fly anglers had some great sport throughout. As the week progressed the winds grew stronger and the fishing got better as warm and cold water become mixed to give a much more suitable temperature for fish to thrive. Indeed, some days saw the rod average reaching over six fish per angler with the majority taking home their eight fish catch limit on Saturday. On Tuesday Paul Tyreman from Liverton Mines enjoyed his fly fishing along the south shore catching a total of nine rainbows and one brown, of which he returned eight using Black Hoppers. On Friday at the east end of the Dam Wall Mally Gill from Middlesbrough and Bill Wood from Ingleby Barwick both caught their eight fish within a fun filled three hour period on ledgered worm and PowerBait cocktail. On Saturday Mr. GT Sowerby and Mr. J Yarrow both from Darlington had a great day at the west end of the Dam fishing with ledgered worm and PowerBait ending their day with eight fish each. The biggest fish of the week a 3lb 8oz blue, one of a total of six caught in the middle of the Dam Wall by Eric Morse from Middlesbrough, again on ledgered worm and PowerBait. Anglers also caught their limits along the south shore which culminated in a fantastic although somewhat blustery week end.

NEWSFLASH – Starting Monday 28 July the next tagged fish caught will be worth an increased cash prize of £150 for those that enter the sweep.

Fishery Headline: Shane’s double limit delight

The week continued to be plagued by strong changing winds and several down pours which helped cool the water temperature and encouraged fish to feed in abundance with many anglers catching limits. Although mainly a week for the bait anglers, several fly anglers recorded some decent catches as Eric Gent from Middlesbrough enjoyed his day at the east end of the reservoir catching a total of nine fish, of which five were blue trout, returning four. Shane Harrison fished the west end of the Dam Wall and caught his limit on worm with Betaine Green groundbait in a feeder, then bought a second permit at lunchtime and caught another eight rainbows to end his day with a total of 16 fish. For the second week in a row the east end of the Dam Wall is the favourite spot for many anglers with both Mally Gill from Middlesbrough and Bill Wood from Ingleby Barwick taking eight fish limits by lunchtime on worm and PowerBait. Sunday saw four visitors from Hartlepool, Mr. A Latherow, Mr. P Phenix, Mr. P Dixon and Mr. L Raywood who had a superb days entertainment at the west end of the Dam Wall and all caught their eight fish limits on worm and Blue PowerBait.

Fishery Headline: Scaling the Dam Wall!!

Scaling continued in it’s present fine form with the rod average peaking at four fish per angler on Tuesday. On calmer days fish could be seen clearly cruising around close in the shallows and surface feeding with multiple shoals visible around the reservoir. There were plenty of good catches recorded in most areas with anglers using a combination of worm and varied PowerBait often mixing different colours on the hook which worked well. Anglers who caught their eight fish limits this week included; George Goldsbrough from Redcar, Rob Owanhill also from Redcar and Mac Porter fishing with his grandson from East Harlsey. All the aforementioned caught their eight fish limits along the west end of the Dam Wall, an area that has produced consistent catches for weeks now!

Fishery Headline: Beautiful brown for Mr. Biggs

The East end of the reservoir has been the hotspot this week for both bait and fly anglers who have recorded some impressive catches from this area. For the third time within this last month Mr Mally Gill from Middlesbrough and Mr Bill Wood from Eaglescliffe had an excellent day catching their 8 fish limits in double quick time. Both anglers fished the east end wall using a combination of ledgered worm and PowerBait. Mr Jake Dale from Stokesly also fished the east end of the wall and using the same tactics he recorded a fine 8 fish limit on Sunday.
This week Dry Flies have been very effective for along the east end and south shore areas. Mr Andy Moscrop from Loftus enjoyed two visits this week, on Thursday he landed 6 fish and on Sunday he caught 8 fish returning four of them on Hoppers and Elk hair Sedge patterns. Mr A Southworth who was visiting the area had a cracking day working his way along the Moor bank catching 2 rainbows,2 browns,1 blue and returning a further six to end his day with 11. The best fish of the week was a super conditioned 5lb brown trout part of a 4 fish catch taken by Mr Arthur Biggs from Redcar fishing ledgered worm on the dam wall.

Fishery Headline: Handy Andy!

It was a fantastic start to the week with a rod average of 4.8 on Monday as the east end hot spot continued from last weekend with bait and fly anglers enjoying some exciting sport. Fly angler Brian Lees from Normanby enjoyed his best days fishing in years along the east end of the wall to land a total of 20 fish; returning 17 of them all on a single Cutthroat Cat. Tom Allen from Middlesbrough, also fishing the east end, was rewarded with £150 when he netted a tagged rainbow on ledgered maggot. This was the second tagged fish caught this week but unfortunately the first had not paid into the sweep and missed out on his reward. First time visitor to the area John Bellamy from Banbury was just passing Scaling but couldn’t resist the opportunity of fly fishing on such a inviting water. Wading at the east bay he was rewarded with a fin perfect 3lb rainbow which was his second fish caught in two casts using a Montana. Steve Lynas from Hinderwell fished ledgered worm with PowerBait at the west end of the wall and caught his eight fish limit by 1pm, bought a second permit and ended his day with 12 in total. The biggest fish of the week at 5lb 8oz was caught by fly angler Andy Moscrop from Loftus on hoppers who worked his way along the south shore ending his day with nine in total, returning five of them.

Bait anglers had an excellent week with the east end bay and moorside the two most successful areas. Mr. G Goldsbrough from Redcar had a frantic Monday morning in the east end bay taking full advantage of his 10 fish loyalty limit on a worm and PowerBait cocktail. Also from Redcar, David Blissett took his eight fish limit on ledgered worm from the east end of the Dam Wall. Emma Holburn from Welbury had a fantastic day on the moorside taking her limit at the big tree on worm and Orange PowerBait with this bait combination proving the most successful in recent weeks. Fly angler Mark Hammond from Redcar worked the moorside and east end bay area with a Dawson’s Olive and was rewarded with four rainbows and an excellent 3lb brown which was safely returned.

Fishery Headline: Limits a plenty as Scaling continues to perform

The week began well with anglers catching at both ends of the reservoir in pleasant weather conditions. However, the second half of the week was dominated by strong winds which forced the majority of anglers to the moorside seeking more sheltered areas as waves pounded against the Dam Wall. There have been good catches recorded around the reservoir but overall the east bay continues to be the most productive area. Keith Hall from Normanby enjoyed a good day on the disabled jetty fishing ledgered worm and PowerBait landing seven fish for a total weight of 12lb 8oz. Nigel Bunford from Middlesbrough had an excellent day fishing the east end of the Dam Wall with bites every cast using ledgered PowerBait Eggs ending the day with his eight fish limit. David Witherington from Guisborough, also fishing the east end of the Dam Wall, was over the moon when he landed a tagged rainbow using Neutral Honey Worm PowerBait and collected a £100 reward. Jake Dale from Stokesly had a cracking Loyalty day on Sunday catching his 10 fish limit which included two rainbows at the 3lb mark fishing ledgered worm and PowerBait at the east end of the reservoir. Derek Ogden from Redcar worked his way along the south shore using a floating line and was rewarded with the biggest fish of the week; a fine 3lb 4oz rainbow which was tempted by a Bibio.

Fishery Headline: Darren’s tagged fish delight

A stormy start to the week hampered sport, however, conditions improved as the week progressed and did not deter the fish from feeding consistently. On Monday Richard Warburton from Redcar faced the howling wind and rain head on fishing the east bay with ledgered worm and PowerBait to be rewarded with his eight catch limit. William Wells from Middlesbrough also caught his eight fish limit on ledgered worm at the east end of the Dam Wall. Darren Stevenson from Durham fished the south shore near to the timber groyne area with ledgered Yellow PowerBait and Magic Dust in a feeder rig and was overjoyed when he landed a tagged rainbow to collect a £200 reward. Steve Lynas from Hinderwell fished the west end of the Dam Wall on Friday with ledgered PowerBait Micetails and caught five rainbows, one of which was the biggest of the week weighing in at 4lb.

Another week of unsettled conditions did not deter Peter Lightfoot who had an excellent day on the jetty fishing worm and PowerBait. Peter took eight fish in his session and weighed in the best catch of the week with a nice 14lb 7oz catch of rainbows. Tommy Johns also had a great day fishing the east end on fly, catching four rainbows and returning two pristine brown trout. Tommy also netted the best fish of the week which was a fin perfect 4lb rainbow. Fishery Headline: Rod average rockets to season high!

The weather might have been unpredictable but this week the fishing certainly wasn’t with both ends of the Dam Wall producing excellent sport. Indeed, one day this week the rod average peaked at 7.6 fish per angler with the weekly average sat at well over four fish per angler offering some of the best sport of the season. Keith Hall from Normanby and Bruce Hodgson from Brotton both netted their 10 fish loyalty limits from the east end with Bruce deciding to try Orange Micetails and took his limit by dinnertime. Ian Macquade from Stockton opted for the east end and took his limit using a short trace with Orange PowerBait. Local fly angler Les Wheatley from Brotton worked the south shore and groyne area catching 12 and returning three fish on a Cat’s Whisker and Silver Invicta.

Customer information
Fishing times will be 9am until 3pm to reflect the shorter hours. As a result, we have reduced the price for a full permit to £16 for an increased catch limit of 10 fish and a family permit will also be reduced to £23 for 15 fish.

Fishery Headline:

With changing conditions throughout the week ranging from strong winds to bright sunshine and thick fog, anglers once again found themselves challenged and having to try multiple techniques to achieve rewards. The ‘Big Tree’ for the third week in a row has been the best spot and George Goldsborough from Redcar had another successful Monday ending his day with six rainbows caught on a worm and PowerBait cocktail. Les Wheatley from Skelton enjoyed a few hours fly fishing in the east bay returning three rainbows. Clive Conway from Guisborough fished the south side of the east end and got his reward when he switched his bait to maggot and caught a cracking 3lb rainbow which was the best of the week.

NEWSFLASH – There will be a sweep and prize for the best catch and heaviest fish last day of the season on Sunday 30 November.

Customer information
Fishing times will be 9am until 3pm to reflect the shorter hours. As a result, we have reduced the price for a full permit to £16 for an increased catch limit of 10 fish and a family permit will also be reduced to £23 for 15 fish.

Fishery Headline:

The fish have been evenly spread around the reservoir with cast and move tactics serving anglers best. Fly anglers Les Wheatley from Skelton and Tommy Johns from Saltburn along with bait anglers Richard Warburton and George Goldsborough both from Redcar all caught one rainbow and returned one brown each. Fishing his usual spot on the west of the Dam Wall Steve Lynas from Hinderwell was using worm and PowerBait and managed to land three nice quality rainbows. Clive Conway from Guisborough also managed to land three rainbows fishing on the south side of the East Bay with a PowerBait cocktail.

Fishery Headline: Noble takes last day plaudits!

Thick fog hindered sport on a couple of occasions this week but calmer weather later in the week was much more welcome and Sunday was a great day to end the season. On Wednesday Derek Ogden from Redcar finished his season with style working his way along the south shore and finishing in the east bay landing six rainbows on a Cutthroat Cat. On Saturday visitor Stuart Allan tried his luck in the deep water on the middle of the Dam Wall and using a PowerBait cocktail landed two rainbows. Sunday was a day for the bait anglers and Steve Lynas from Hinderwell pulled in three rainbows including the best of the week at 2lb 9oz. This was beaten by only 1oz as Harry Noble’s took the last day prize for the biggest fish of the day.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all anglers for their support during the 2014 season and wish everyone an enjoyable and peaceful Christmas and New Year.

Fishery Headline: Summer delay as Scaling sits in the clouds!

Constant thick fog and drizzle played a major part in the weeks events as Scaling’s micro climate near the coast and up in the hills resulted in less than perfect conditions. However, it did not stop Jeff Walsh from Stockton having a superb two hours on Wednesday morning. Fishing at the west end with ledgered worm tipped with PowerBait Eggs he landed his eight fish limit for a total weight of 16lb 12oz including the best of the week at 3lb 5oz. With the finer weather over the weekend the fishing improved and Sunday Jake Dale from Stokesley netted his eight fish limit in style using ledgered Green and Yellow PowerBait amongst the east end rocks. At the west end of the Dam, Red PowerBait Paste and Pink Eggs were the most effective baits and float fished worm continues to work well to cover rising fish on an evening!

NEWSFLASH: Another bumper stocking planned of Lartington fish this week.

Fishery Headline: Mouse tails trap the fish

Anglers experienced challenging conditions with sleet and snow falling midweek with a strong wind from the east. Before the wintry weather arrived anglers were catching well on ledgered baits with Powerbait Mouse tails accounting for the larger rainbows. Mr Dave Blissett from Redcar landed 5 rainbows including the heaviest fish of the week at 4lb using this method. Mr Jake Dale from Stokesley took his 8 fish limit from both ends of dam wall all caught on white Mouse tails. The weekend brought mild temperatures, bright sunshine and calm winds which encouraged the trout to head for the deeper water. Despite less than ideal conditions Mr Harry Noble from Sleights landed 6 rainbows from the west end jetty including two at 3lbs 8oz all caught on ledger tactics with white gulp eggs and worm. Mr Richard Hay from Brotton and his three children had a fantastic 4 hours session at the west end on Sunday taking their 8 fish limit on ledgered Garlic PowerBait. This weekend saw the introduction of Kayak and Float Tube fishing at Scaling Dam. The calm conditions allowed participating anglers to cover all areas of the reservoir who enjoyed some great action. Catches featured quality rainbows up to 3lbs and some of our resident well conditioned Jack Pike. A full report with pictures featuring our Kayak and Float tube anglers is now available on our Facebook page.
