It was quite strange.....we drifted out from the bank at The Seat and i had a couple of rainbows on the midge tip and hare's ears....my lad has nothing

I motored back in as my lad was setting up, he said go right to the bank, as it would give him a bit more time in the calm water ...

He saw the Koi cruising along the willows about 10ft off the bank and said he wants to have a go .......I told him to leave it alone as it would be a waste of time.....

He put on a single fly a size 12 hares ear booby and cast in front of it......it just sucked it in...

He struck and it ran out into open water.....away from the willows and weed, so we followed it....

It even half jumped once...like a belly flop.

Anyway I was made up for him......he used a lot of swear words during the capture.

Now his sister and mum are ribbing him mercilessly.....his new nickname is "Koi Boy" ....

Yes...I guess he will go on about this for many years

Outstanding fish! What a great catch. Carp are great on the fly. Well done.

I used to keep Koi Carp in a pond in my garden. I had 4 of them. Instead of giving them names I gave them letters of the alphabet instead.

One day a Heron landed in the pond to try to eat them. A, B and C all got away. The Heron went for the D Koi!!

I'll get my coat!!

Epic!

Isn't fishing just brilliant you just never know what you will catch when you are out and I bet you both didn't expect that when you left the house for Grafham.

That one will live long in the memory.

There is nothing better for a Mum or Dad to introduce their Kids to opportunities and they come to fruition. What a wonderful day for both your son and you also Rob. Days like this just go to show that dreams do still come true.🙂🙂👍

Near Wasilla Alaska,
Quite the catch!

I've seen some rather large and fancy Goldfish / Koi back in the late 1990's and early 2000's in one of Americas most famous spring creeks but did not catch any. There were 2 of them as I recall but not nearly as large as your son's beauty.

Well done to him,

Ard

Fishing Grafham today with my lad, and he caught this.. on a size 12 Hare's Ear off "The Seat"....gave us quite the run around ...had to follow it in the boat on one occasion before it spooled him...

Thankfully we managed to net it....I estimate it weighed 25lb ish........it was deep, broad and very heavy when I lifted it in the boat....

Superb fish and a great story. I remember lots of goldfish in the Forth and Clyde Canal at Singer many years ago. Some of them were quite large but nothing like this fish.

Kneeling in the riffle, just behind the scour pool
Just re-activating this old thread - I reckon there are a few in there, Rob.
Having long since given up the competItion lark - I was having a paddle for the the shrimpers at Hedge End the other day and one about 2/3rds of that size nearly swam over my feet it was so engaged with the shrimps!
Last October, watched one of about 7-8lb cruising around Coves for about 5 minutes.... both v similar colouring but without the yellow on the head.
Didn't say anything to anyone at the time for fear of being asked what I'd been smoking 😀.
Speaks buckets about the quality of the rezzy - superb grown-on trout- massive, healthy predators around the towers and along the pipeline, potentially record-breaking bream, and now some sort of head of Koi that are apparently flourishing! I love Grafham....
Cheers
Mike
