I just changed jobs and am now working near the Grand Union Canal in Milton Keynes.

I have done a bit of fly fishing on canals, but never enjoyed it as much as on the river, so I thought I'd give lure fishing a go.

I bought a cheap Chinese rod and reel set (Sougayilang, £16 delivered)and some expensive braid (Fishing Republic, £18) and nipped down to the canal before work.

A previous conversation with a local spinner had given me the location of a particular road bridge to target, and sure enough, I have just caught my first Zander....

The lure was something I found at the bottom of a bag I use when I go sea fishing, once a year. It was weighed down with a BB split shot, so the whole set up was hardly hi-tec.

This is the first Zander I have ever seen IRL, never mind caught, and at 13 inches it's not a bad start.
