What CDC to buy?

Hi Gerry,
It depends of what flies do you want to make. For example if you want to make delicate flies like dun flies, spinners and small emergers then Khaki Campbel is fantastic for these flies. Also Wild Mallard CDC is good.

If you want to make large cdc flies then you can go with natural grey cdc:

For colored bodies and flies you can go with:

I hope that helps :)
cheers,
Lucian

Thanks Lucian, most of the ones I need will be for Duns in the 14-18 size and underwings or bubbles on sedge patterns. Thanks for the tips I will order them in the next few weeks.

Cheers

Hi ackroyd,. I have a pair of snowshoe rabbit feet but have never used them. What patterns would these suit and what part of the foot has the best floating properties?

I use snowshoe for small emergers and Shipman's. I prepare and tie snowshoe as advocated in Ed Engle’s books ‘Tying Small Flies’ (Engle credits the method to Jim Cannon). I cut off all the hair from the midpoint of the foot to the heel and gave it a whiz in a coffee grinder. I then ‘stack’ a clump in my fingers before tying in. This way you get a good mix of guard hair/ under fur.

Thanks mate. I will try a couple of emerges with them. Hope they are still in decent condition as I bought them about 3 years ago and haven't tied a single fly with them.

Is there a reliable UK source for genuine snowshoe? (I love Lucian and Bogdan's ranges but don't fancy paying postage for one or two items - don't recall if they have snowshoe)

I seem to remember a lot of other unlucky rabbits' feet being sold as snowshoe but there being little of the genuine stuff around. I might be in Bakewell on Sunday so could go and see Pete Arfield if he's in but just in case he's not - any ideas?

I'm placing an order at the end of the month so could get you some snowshoe and post it on to you if you can find anything in the meantime.

Thanks for the offer, Gerry and thanks for the info, Phil.

Pete wasn't in so I'll be getting some in from Funky - as far as I know the Nature's Spirit stuff is the real deal so I'm chuffed to see they have it in. I don't know why I didn't check them!
