C, are there any books available about the insect life to be expected on your target waters ? A bit like the Goddard and O'Reilly books referred to. If so, that may be a better bet than this quite simple phone app that inevitably focuses on the UK.

On the streams I fish here in the south of France I've never in all these years seen a hatch. There is never much fly life apparent but I have caught, not often compared to nymphing, on the dry. I prefer to fish the dry.
Now I know the trout are feeding on something bit they are rarely feeding on the surface so the reason I wanted the app was to give me a clue as to what MAY be hatching at that time of the year, what MIGHT trigger a rise so I can be better armed when prospecting, which is what I have to do most often.
I was just hoping to be a bit less clueless that's all !
    Are you fishing tailwaters?

I haven't found any books that target this area sadly.
No, it's not a tail water just small rain fed streams running through gorges, forest and vineyards.
Yes, I do heartily repent. I repent I had not done more mischief; and that we did not cut the throats of them that took us, and I am extremely sorry that you aren't hanged as well as we.

Might be worth doing a bit of general research to find out how different typical river fly life in Provence is from what's to be expected in Great Britain and Ireland. Probably the same general groups of insects - upwinged flies, caddis, stoneflies and diptera - but with detail differences...let me say I'm guessing here. If the answer is "not very different" then either the Match a Hatch app or Pat O'Reilly's book referred to upthread will be useful. But if there are wide variations, I'm afraid I've run out of ideas...

A bit of rock turning and kick sampling will show you what is in the river and ten minutes of investigating will help loads especially if you diarise it. John Goddard's book 'Trout Flies of Britain and Europe' helped me loads when I fished in Portugal and Spain, I'd add that the flies in southern Europe did seem about 2 sizes smaller.

I love fishing dries but remember the mainstay of a trouts diet is subsurface.

Corto, I have the Kindle version of Matching The Hatch by Peter Lapsley and Cyril Bennet on my mobile and I use it often on the bank. Of course its intended for the British Isles, but I think it would be useful in Europe generally.
