It rained today in Wharfedale. Proper rain, just about the whole day long and I wasnít best pleased about having the waterproof on from the start. Started with the duo, a red body Klinkhammer and a black nymph on point, but was distracted by two mink hunting for crayfish from the far bank. They were good at it too, at least they left the fish alone.
Had one good trout to the nymph which put up a proper scrap and needed some tlc to recover. A smaller fish on the dry soon after and then, at the end of the drift a savage take on the nymph as it rose up to the surface. A powerful fish and I had it to the net once but fluffed it and he got back into midstream and threw the hook. Bu&&er...a good pound and a half, but the downstream takes donít hook as well as a rule.
Stopped for lunch and changed to spiders for the faster water at the head of the pool. Hooked a fish on the point fly and unclipped the net from the magnet in readiness guess who hadnít attached the lanyard after lunch? Net gone for ever, but fish brought to hand and unhooked.
Moved downstream and fished with dry flies for a bit but nothing doing, the rain by now so torrential as to sink the flies, but not a bad day overall.

Thursday I ventured onto the upper / middle reaches of the river , clarity of the water was very clear , this beat does hold some decent fish , had a few that are in the 19 inch class over the years . Set up Hends GPX 3 weight , Fish On French Leader , 6 foot of 0.14 Fluro and 2 PTN's .

The longer deeper pools and some of the bigger pocket waters did fish very well , picked up plenty of decent trout , some around the 15 inch class of fish , along with plenty of smaller trout and grayling .

The fishing was steady , plan was to use a bit of stealth and river craft to give me the best chance of catching fish from a river that was rather low in places .

High light of the day was when I caught a wild rainbow trout that was fin perfect , it punched well above its weight , stunning wild rainbow that was around 9 inch long .

Ended up with 38 fish , very pleased with the outcome , weather looks a bit dull and grim , might give it a miss and tie a few nymphs up .

I've been out after sewin this week, generally between 10 &12, they remain as elusive as ever.

Five trips for three sewin, it sounds pretty hard going but there's something about hooking one that draws you back. Nothing big, all under two pounds, one under a pound. Stopped taking the #6 rod for one outing to try a #3 weight, amazing to have landed one on that set up, half the fight's in mid air, I've landed some big trout on the rod but nothing felt like that, quite an experience, it's as though the rod was alive.

Quite an experience last night too, very stormy here and pitch black, have to admit it put the schitz up me at first, particularly with a thousand weird noises from the wind swirling through. All forgotten with the first jumping fish - blanked but had a trout, treated with respect but a disappointment after the initial take.

Other nights have been sublime, warm, calm, with the afterglow of the day fading in the west the brightening moon showing through the clouds to the east, all accompanied by the song of the river, unforgettable moments punctuated by the splosh of jumping fish.

Flies, black and silver variants on the whole, using heavy double hooks for depth when assumed to be necessary, my intermediate line MIA.

Lovely report Colin, I almost felt I was there, nice hooks as well.

They're good enough alright so thanks for those Steve.

I've been using Kamasan B 200s #6 for singles, super strong, wide gape quite heavy and a decent length of shank - those Partridge doubles are something else though, need bins to see the end of them.

Out this morning on the little river. Very little sign of fly life or anything hatching (except for a surprise late solitary mayfly), some fish rising under overhanging trees and bushes, didn't want any of the flies offered. Shaking a branch to retrieve a fly, found millions of aphids came off. Tried smallest flies I have but after a while changed to nymphs so started taking a few fish. Best one I tried to photograph very quickly, keeping out of water for just a few secs. Can just see black nymph in jaw.
Quite likely that top water fishing may pick up in the evening, must give it a try.

A couple of hours on the Pickering Beck over lunchtime. It was very hot and few fish were showing. Nothing to the dry, but managed three little ones on a beaded hare's ear and one on a PTN. The fish aren't big but they are very pretty little wild browns. Some more pics here: http://hopelesslyoptimisticangler.com/?p=3228
