"Lovely write up on your blog too. Sounds like a good day was had" . . .

It was a perfect day, memorable. The conditions were tricky with a gusty downstream breeze and the trout were difficult to tempt. I learnt a lot about presentation. I used a traditional approach, upstream dry fly, all day. The fish in the photo was about 4lbs and in excellent condition.

A bit late but got out yesterday with a mate. Same section as Saturday and same approach.
This the fishing was a bit slower and after 1.5 hours of fishing had managed 7 fish and all small, unfortunately for me, quite a few missed and lost. I didn't seam to have my eye in. My mate hadn't done much better, he only managed 4 and again only small. After lunch things picked up including me. In 2.5 hours of fishing I had managed another 18 fish, most on the nymph and they got bigger.
On a downside, I caught a 10 inch brown that had quite a chunk out of it's back between tail and dorsal. It looked like clean cuts were made and a triangular wedge removed. The point going down to the backbone and the sides of the cut appeared very straight, the flesh was quite red. I've seen damaged fish before when herons, cormorants and other saw billed ducks have had a go, also wounds from mink (not seen otters round here). There were no other marking on the fish so I'm curious as to what happened to it! It fought well and swam off strongly on release. I'm sorry now that I didn't get a pic of it but felt it needed to go back pronto.
My mate also did better in the afternoon catching 3 on a shuttle cock buzzer and sveral to a PTN with bright copper bead. He said my grey nymph didn't work, yet it worked well for me.

    Another good day Ged.

The wounded fish reminds me how tough fish can be. I remember at Grafham some time ago catching fish that had severe cormorant damage, including one with guts hanging out, but still feeding.

Had a few hours this evening on the river, it was dropping this morning and a reasonable level when I checked, rising and cappuccino looking when I got there I was worried after fishing a couple of pools without a touch though things did pick up as I worked up river, had a trout in the next run followed by a decent grayling about 14-15 inch, hard to measure as it was a wriggly as an eel, another 4 trout up this bit and continued to pick up fish as I work up river, two double hook ups, the first a couple of trout, landed one, the second later on was a couple of grayling which I got both, had to pack up at 7.50 as it was getting too dark to see properly probably my last evening session this year

I now have internet connection again. The last few weeks have been busy moving house. No chance to go fishing. Painting, decorating and all that stuff.

No idea when I will be able to venture out again. I am hoping to squeeze in at least a couple of sessions before the season closes at the end of the month. Still up to my ar#e in boxes and at the moment don't know were some of my fishing stuff is. Wouldn't be surprised if my wife has hidden it!

I've enjoyed catching up and reading all your threads.

I’m finally managing to stand upright, still a bit sore but the excruciating pain has subsided so I got out today.
Eamont this morning and Eden this afternoon, they are both up a bit for my liking and slightly coloured but perfectly fishable.
Very little rising but I had two small brownies to the nymph so not a wasted trip.
Lovely day, mild upstream breeze, just so nice to be out again.

Douglas you’ve got the winter to sort the house out, get out and fish.

Glad to hear your back is improving Steven and you managed to get out

Forgot to mention the other night or previously, is it just me or do any of you pr1ck* your lip with the hook when tying a knot it doesn’t half bleed, done it quite a lot recently.

Well done Steven, good that you’re recovering and able for the remains of the season.

You should video this, i'd love see you tying a knot with your lips

Just kiddin ya, i assume it's when wetting your knot, did it once years ago, now hold my fingers over point of hook to prevent, as you say it bleeds and stings alot.

Iíve pretty much avoided my local trout streams over the past month or so choosing to chase big grayling on dries on the Welsh Dee with quite a bit of success instead but given the end of the trout season looming I figured Iíd have a crack on one of my smaller trout streams as a final hooray for 2019.

In my head there were going to be rising fish everywhere but how wrong can you be! Picked up a dozen or so in the first hour on mostly f-flies but wasnít breaking any records so reluctantly on with the double nymphs and it was near as damn it a fish a chuck for the rest of the day.

Stupid numbers but mostly small although a handful were probably over a pound.

Cracking end to my trout season but really looking forward to the Dee again for the next two weekends. Thereís been some cracking fish around the past month or so so hereís hoping for some more.
