Default Re: River Soar-Middle of Leicester

Last Saturday (the 13th April) I had another bash at the Leicester wild trout stocks.
I thought the upper soar might be carrying a touch of water as there had been some rain during the week. It wasn't! It was like everywhere running very clear, slow and low - more like early autumn after a particularly hot dry summer.

I'd also forgotten my waders to make things worse so my short rod approach as ditched for a long rod to try and help me keep my distance.

The fishing was hard with fish only to be found in the deepest pools, fastest riffles (not many on the upper Soar!) or under log jams.

I managed 4 browns and a small out of season chub in about an hour and a half.
Two of the browns (12 oz each) coming from where a drain enters the river and the Soar resembles a northern fast flowing stream - shame it is the only such spot.

I decided on a move downstream to where I'd caught on my last attempt as the bank is easier there for my waderless fumblings.

It was far easier - the water is more open with a nice solid bank but still stealth was the order of the day.
Here I added 7 more browns and two more chub.

The biggest trout was maybe 1lb 12oz but was super skinny. In top condition it would have been a two and half...maybe later in the year. ;-)

The most pleasing thing was the amount of coarse fish I spotted.

More chub, dace and roach than I've seen anywhere on the upper Soar. I'll be trying for them after June 15th and this might just be a good winter silver fish venue too. Fingers crossed.

Another session and another haul of brownies. This time 11 all to a small red head taddy (again!) and against the conditions - no waders, no water, bright and blowing a hoolie. Can't wait for everything to be "right".

Default Re: River Soar-Middle of Leicester

I was out again in and around Leicestershire on Monday searching for some wild trout action.

The low water conditions made the fishing very patchy but concentrated the fish into the prime spots - anywhere with some depth, flow and cover.

In the early afternoon I found myself on one spot that looked like it must hold a trout or two. A couple of splashy rises from fish far too large to be dace seemed to confirm this.

I wasn't messing around with a dry, although I'm sure a trout might have obliged, but opted for the ever reliable tungsten taddy. This time a size 14 in dark olive. I was standing on shallow gravel and flicking a couple of rod lengths downstream where it dropped sharply to around 3 foot deep then simply swinging the taddy into the far side where most of the flow was.

Neither Pete who had joined me from Peterborough, nor myself could believe it when I'd had 4 big trout within a few minutes. By big I mean not tiddlers - proper fish of 12oz to a pound.

Then I hit a real lump:

Once that was safely returned I was back in again adding another 3 all around a pound. One of which was followed almost to the net by a 3 or 4 lb beast...I never did hook that one. ;-(
Eight good trout from one small swim and within about 20-25 minutes fishing!

Probably the best, most productive trout swim I've ever found myself on.

I've fished it many times before and never had a trout - perch and chub but not trout. Deff. the right place and time. Pete thinks I'm always a jammy sod and Monday just confirmed his thoughts.

About 50 yards upstream was another banker that produced 4 good brownies, a chub and 2 dace.

That was about it. A couple of big trout followed but didn't take including a 3lb plus fish that followed a big dace I'd hooked. That one might have gone 5lb! I might have to start using some bigger fish patterns at this rate.

A great afternoon for me with 12 good trout plus a few out of season chub and dace.
