The travellers were at Ebchester in far greater numbers than recent years by the 31st May (they were also in the old football field, which they haven't used in recent times). By my next visit on Sat 9th they'd gone to Appleby, but the same ones usually call on the way back, so they might be there again now. They've never stayed long, to my recollection.

On Saturday, the mayfly hatch was still in good swing, and the shucks were everywhere in the margins. In the last couple of years, they've usually been good till the middle of June. In typical fashion, the trout are starting to get a bit more on and off, though, with a lot of spinners going a long way through a line of lies before eventually being taken and artificials being treated with even more disdain. Still a big improvement on early spring of course!

I had a trip out on Saturday at Winlaton Mill my first for about 3 weeks.

River was low and the sun was bright, I didn't hold out much hope... and for the first hour that seemed to be the way of it. then everything just switched on plenty of smallish trout in the 9-11" range and a nice stock fish (I think) of around 15" ended up with about 11 fish to hand in 3 hours ... so a canny day for me...been a slow slow season thus far though.

    Cheers
