Default Hardy fly reel foot getting larger

I bought a new Hardy Marquis LWT 4 to go with an old 1960s cane rod and found that the reel foot was too deep for it to fit in any useable way. I sold all my old Marquis reels about 10 years ago but I just bought a nice old Marquis 4 on eBay and found that it fitted perfectly. I think this is a shame because the newer Marquis is nicer in many ways and slightly lighter and would otherwise suit the rod well. I still have some other older reels e.g. CFO II and Hardy Sovereign and they fit the old rod but newer ones like Angel and Duchess are not really useable without modification.
Incidentally the spools appear interchangeable between the Marquis LWT 4 and the old Marquis 4, which is slightly useful.

I also had this problem. I bought a used Hardy Shadow rod that was about 6 years old and my Hardy ASR reels wouldn't fit on it.
