    Default Hardy Perfect? Blue Agate

Found this reel sat in my uncles shed, itís been there a long time and probably needs some tlc. Would love to know some more about it. A production year or rough estimate would be useful as it came from my great uncle.

    Cheers Sean

Hi Sean, yes it’s a perfect, what diameter is it?
Don’t get a lot with that colour agate, clean it gently with warm soapy water and a toothbrush before anything else.

I thought the blue agate might be a bit rare. We’d love to get it into serviceable condition again. The diameter is 3 3/8. Don’t want to clean it too much as the wear on it is from decades of my great uncle using it. A gentleman and a great fisherman. Is the handle ivory or some type of bone?

    Cheers for the info.

Depends on the year which I’m not sure of, maybe bone.
3 1/8th is the most sought after, but still a nice reel.
Agree, don’t polish it, but you need to remove the crud.

Nice one! I read that the blue agate was used very rarely and only when the original agate supplier which was German based were unable to send them when WW1 kicked off? Made for a cool story anyway. My uncle is going to give it a clean with soapy water and a soft bristle brush then.

    Thanks,

    Sean

The handle is probably ivorine ,looking at the foot the reel is most likely to have been made between 1923 to 1927 when the ribbed foot was introduced. If you can open the reel ( pretty easy to do) and upload a photo or two it will be easier to date depending on if it’s a Mark 1 or ll .
Either way a nice find .

You have found a Gem in a time capsule.
Please DO NOT clean it. This is even rearer than the red agate.
Do yourself a favour and Please never use a tooth brush, it will leave marks.
It is worth serious money, if it is left in its original condition.
(Let me know if you would like to sell it)

Thanks, I knew it was a pretty special reel when I found it but after a bit of research Iím beginning to realise just how rare they are. A guy I know in the tackle trade is adamant itís WW1 era. It wonít ever be sold as it was a lost and now found family heirloom.

I do however know that American collectors pay big money for them, found a sold listing for a smaller size blue agate up at $2000 itís pretty astonishing really. Insurance might not be out of the question.

    Sean,

This could be a 1912 Check Perfect... Did you open it?

"It won’t ever be sold as it was a lost and now found family heirloom. "

    Fantastic reel!
