Copy of my report from the weekend:

Fished Llyn Elsi at the weekend.

To get there: You can hike up from Betws y Coed, but the recommended access (Betws Angling Club Ticket) is up the hill along 2 miles of unmetalled forest road. Made for some interesting Colin Macrae style moments on the hairpins reminding me of my Escort Mexico, but generally a good road if you go steady - even for a road machine with fat tyres and lowered suss.

Not too many easy places to access regarding back cast, some involving shoving through undergrowth designed to rip your legs off! One or two good rocky points to stand though where you can get a good range of casts in to cover the bankside waters.

Apart from last month in the season any method is allowed on here (and that seemed to include young scousers in blow up dinghys, noisy swimmers etc - A bit surprising given the difficulty of access and remote location).

Good fly life present including Sedges, Beetles and a predominance of Blue Damsels (see pics). Even though I had a good imitation handy, a local said he hadn’t seen a fish in 5 visits so when I arrived my hopes were dampened. Sun was high, water temp was “bath water” or hotter so not expecting an easy ride.

Started at 1pm ( A free afternoon whilst the women were shopping) and finished at 18:30 in time to barbecue the one ‘bow I kept out of four to the net. Dropped a few too, all on a fast sinking line with Green/Black Montana pattern.

All were ‘bows, didn’t see any sign of the Browns or Brook Trout also supposed to be present.

All in all a very nice spot and worth a try.
