    Default Painted Lady (Vanessa cardui)

I managed to find my first Painted Lady earlier this week. I've heard that there is a big migration of this pretty butterfly expected this year, apparently every several years this event occurs. They lay their eggs on thistles, so if you want to find one a big bed of thistles is probably a good place to start. I managed to get a photo but only had the phone with me so not a good pic and I couldn't get a picture with its wings open. So have a look next time your out, apparently they are moving up the country, I'm near Lincoln by the way.
    Cheers

I'm no expert, but I would say from the outline of the wings that that was a comma, rather than a painted lady?

No bother. I was chasing a kosher painted lady about with the camera last week, but I never did catch up with her!

Don't let it bother you SG, it's par for the course, don't be embarrassed, the good thing is you're interested and that you're sharing your interest, that's what matters.

The cockups help you to assess your approach to using keys/ google and lead to better outcomes.

Looking forward to your next post and looking out for painted ladies

As we're in Wildlife it's worth mentioning we had our doors open tonight due to the heat and a toad strolled through a couple of hours ago, it must have covered about 10 metres from the garden to get to the front room. That's three different toads we've seen here over the last three days, quite unusual to get such a concentrated burst of sightings and the first to have found its way into the heart of the house.

Thanks for the comments fella's, another picture from the same day. I'm fairly confident that this is a Red Admiral.

Nice weather has really brought out the butterflies around us in N Devon. A walk around my garden resulted in me seeing Green veined white, large white, brimstone, painted lady, peacock, red admiral, meadow brown, ringlet, small skipper, gatekeeper, comma, silver washed fritillary and common blue. Not bad in 13 species.

    Here you go...

    Painted Lady...

Loads of them streaming-in past my window today. Went out with the camera and grabbed a few shots of them. Will post the best of them in the nature photography thread when processed.
